This show was adsolutly brilliant! My favorate were the Bristols, the 250 Lusso and 275 GTB Ferraris, and the Italian Job display. There was so much to see, it was hard deciding what to leave out of my video.

@@lmm I still remember the first time I saw an SD1. Park Hotel Tenby summer 1976. It was a sort of mustard colour. I fell in love immediately. It looked (to me) just like my Corgi Ferrari Daytona. I still don't understand to this day why when dad chose his company car at the time he chose that horrible Austin Princess 2200HLS when he could have had another Triumph 2000 or the 2.0ltre SD1. I "owned" (very briefly) a brown 3500 V8 auto in 1987. A student friend left it for me outside his house in Swansea when he went back to Sweden. By the time he sent me the logbook and keys from Gothenburg and I got around to going to pick it up it had either been nicked or towed away to the scrapyard. Pity. Mind you it was rusty as hell, had bald tyres and the sunroof leaked (and those were the good bits!) It was only 10yrs old!

6:44 I would assume the reason that didn't catch on may have been in part due to leg room, and part crash safety (wheels don't crumple).
@lmm
@lmm 5 лет назад
That's quite a good thought - though I'd assume ample leg room given the size of vehicle. Still uber cool though!

And, so I understand, the aircraft service yard near me is about to dispose of its American Dodge 4x4 Carmichael crash tender from the mid-late '70s, which used to be the crash tender for the airfield at HMS Daedalus. It was transferred to Fleetlands, along with the replacement 6x6 Range-Rover crash tender when Daedalus closed as a military base and has been kept in reserve since about 1986 when the Range-Rover took over front line service. Although it is a US vehicle, it is right-hand drive and it has a lovely big petrol V8, I believe the famous 440 cu. in. big block...
@lmm
@lmm 5 лет назад
.... How much do they want? Cause that's so up my street.

@@lmm I'm not sure yet, though I can't imagine it's going to be particularly expensive due to its age and the fact that it has a hoofing great 7.2 or 7.7 petrol engine. I understand it is being handled by the disposal people who deal with retired military vehicles so it will be turning up on their websites soon. With it having been a military vehicle and maintained in reserve it should be in pretty decent condition all round, but unlike the Carmichael Range-Rover it doesn't seem to be a particularly desired vehicle, and being as it is right-hand drive it's not even much good for export which would suggest the price is going to be pretty low. I have no idea how many were produced, but I've never seen another one and it certainly caused a hell of a stir when it turned up on a military airfield back in the '70s, but it's hard to think of anything else then that could have done the job, other than a converted Range-Rover which would have been a whole lot of money...

I don't suppose they could be persuaded to let it go to a nice fire engine and weird vehicle collector with a fledgling RU-vid channel? 😂

What can I say but you have made me feel very very old as I remember cars like the SD1 going for about a few hundred and gen 1 celica and many others you could get for less them 400 quid and big jags was so cheap to buy, the electric classic car is a no and the dash is hideous and top marks for your camera man and good editing and work on the double act ;-)
@lmm
@lmm 5 лет назад
SD1's are fetching money now - do really fancy one. The electric car is something I'd entertain having if I wanted an electric car. But it would need a retro dash. I'll pass on your comments to Matt! Thanks!

Can't believe you haven't previously appreciated how cool old Citroens were! The SM is awesome, but they did loads of quirky stuff, and whilst their modern stuff doesn't quite compare they still have the odd quirky feature (and the C6 isn't that old and ticks plenty of boxes). You need to learn a bit about the Matra Rancho, it was the predecessor of the Renault Espace (designed and built by Matra, and the first MPV), and was supposed trying to cash in on the success of the Range Rover, but lacked any actual off road ability, so beating todays craze for SUV 'crossovers' by about 30 years, and look at the front, you can't say that the Discovery (first proper family off roader) didn't take some inspiration from it! Don't dis 'toy cars'! As you said about the Ferrari GTO, it would just be great to look at - well model cars allow you to do just that for a fraction of the price (although, admittedly, some are as expensive as real cars, but you will save on not having to tax, insure, fuel or fix it!). I have a McLaren F1, Countach (in yellow!) , Miura and XJ220 all in 1/12 form and they look fantastic, I have about 70 in the more affordable 1/18 (although, as with so many things the prices of these have gone way up so havent bought any for ages!). Otherwise, good video, nice to see vehicles that work sometimes ;)

I had always been told that Citroën had a glorious past of exciting and wonderful design, and now I agree. World's away from lots of the plastic tat of today. I would really like serveral of them. The Rancho sounds amazing. I totally believe that based on the looks. I wonder if any are still kicking around. Light hearted ribbing at best - trev has quite the collection of model cars, like I do with trains! It's silly what they cost though - I saw an (admittedly very nice) new model advertised in 'o' guage (larger than your traditional toy train) which cost more than my actual, full sized, mostly working locomotive!
@imnotamechanic3491
@imnotamechanic3491 5 лет назад
@@lmm Unfortunately most of the quirky old citroens are getting pricey now too, an SM is really serious money, and most anything else pre-90s is now officially classic so several £k, however, I've always had a soft spot for an XM, which is supposed to have a better ride than a Rolls Royce (I originally put Roller, then realised to you it could be one of your cars, or something you use to lay roads), and you can still get them under a grand, so maybe you should set up an ebay search and look for the next addition to your shed. I know what you mean about models, I have seen some really nice ones, very good scale and painstakingly detailed, costing £7k! Thats more than the car I drive cost when it was new! I never really bought new models unless they were a really good price, but now even the basic (virtually toys) have gone up that a 1/18 scale bargain price would be £30! There are a few Rancho's about, they are extremely rare, theres a few Matra fans on the Avantime forum, I believe that although they had plastic bodies, they hadn't really sorted out the chassis, so like many cars of the era they have rusted away, and don't think they were that popular in the first place. (how many left says 10 in the country, 4 taxed 6 SORN).
@lmm
@lmm 5 лет назад
@@imnotamechanic3491 This is the problem - so many of the cool cars are really getting to be mega money - far more than they're really worth. Yes my first thought at Roller is a road making device - probably steam powered. There are so many vehicles I want to be the next addition to the fleet. I will very soon be running out of space. Don't suppose you know of another large barn that needs filling? It's crazy isn't it. I'm sure the models are really nice - but an actual working car for the same or less money? I'll have another working machine please. Ah, so the body is still around - just none of the underneath? They've not survived terribly well then. Can't say I'm surprised really.

The SDI (or SD1) wasnt the car to have back in the day. They were rot boxes and very unreliable. They were in the same catagory of jokes as a Lada, FSO and Skoda. lol While you were looking at the over pimped Fiat 500, you failed to see one of the best cars on the road in the 70's behind you. The Ford Escort MK1. The Mantra Rancho toy car was a real car with a Simca front and was made to try and beat the Range Rover. It was classed as a poor mans range rover in the 70's. With the simca 1300 engine and very unreliable, they did not catch on. That style of taxi was still driving around in the 60's. I remember them well. All were council owned and run. The days of hailing a taxi to take you where ever you wanted. And cheap too. Unlike a taxi ride today.
@lmm

It's a rover 😂. The rot is expected. I've got a real soft spot for the sd1 though. The mk1 escort is cool, but there were lots of other shiny things to look at 😂 Love the fact that they tried to challenge the Range Rover with that! Such a pretty taxi too
