"What do wow and flutter sound like?"

Analog mediums such as audio tape and vinyl (phonograph) occasionally suffer from a wavering speed distortion called "wow and flutter". I demonstrate artificially induced W&F in this video [at an unusually high level, so it is easy to hear] so people will know what it sounds like. It's usually inaudible on better systems but the ear is more sensitive to it on some material, especially with pure tones and long, sustained piano and flute notes.
LP: Funk and Wagnalls, The Joy of Great Music, Frederic Chopin, Piano Concerto in F minor, Fantasy-Impromptu in C-sharp minor manufactured by RCA Custom FW-502, Rena Kyriakou, piano, Album 2 side 2.
Here's a link to what this piece is supposed to sound like: • Chopin - Fantaisie-Imp...

Well from the the perspective of high fidelity [high faithfulness/truthfulness/accuracy] it is low fidelity. The goal of high fidelity is having a perfect (to the ear) indistinguishable copy, aka "transparency".

@@m.zillch3841 It's why I never understood the "vinyl is best" people; surely a digital representation of a sound is always going to be closer to the real thing than a vinyl's analog recording? I know they now admit that vinyl isn't closer to the actual sound being recorded, but is "warmer" somehow. I would rather watch a digitally downloaded copy of a film than watch it on VHS that is for sure

@@mikesully110 To respond to the digital video vs VHS part, the reason a lot of people prefer VHS is because it's more of an experience. With digital, you simply click a button, wait for the download, and play. I don't know about you, but sometimes digital viewing gets old and I feel like the humans from WALL-E. With VHS, though, you can *hold* the video, and take care of it, and personalize it (stickers/labels). The simple novelty of physical media is a great source of charm. Of course, I'm more of a CD/DVD freak than a Vinyl/VHS fan, probably just because I'm a zoomer and that's what I grew up with.

Brilliant! Been looking for something like this for a while. I was curious as to what that warping sound was on old VHS tapes that always made me feel nostalgic. Turns out it was "wow" haha. Now I know what it's called, I can look into how I might artificially recreate this effect for a retro film I'm working on. Thanks!

I understand wow and flutter to be slight variations in pitch brought on my wearing down equipment of the belt or maybe something mechanical or electronic. It doesn't bother me in low levels. I have trouble understanding the difference between the two but now I know . Thanks for the info!

Could wow and flutter affect certain instruments only? On several records I’ve started noticing a sort of wah wah on things like synthesisers that are not there on the digital version. I’ve tried cleaning the record and stylus, swapping cartridges, changing anti skate, rechecking all settings and the problem remains. I initially thought it was an off centre pressing but old records I never had a problem with are exhibiting the same behaviour.
@m.zillch3841
@m.zillch3841 2 года назад
WnF on turntables alter all frequencies uniformly however perceptually we may notice it more easily on some over others and especially on sustained notes. Beside off center spindle holes, warps on records can cause "warp wow" in many tonearm designs, but it could be other things as well. Sometimes it is embedded in the disc itself and you have become more sensitive to hearing it over time so it seems new but was actually there all along. . . . You might try downloading and printing out a strobe card from vinylengine www.vinylengine.com/strobe-discs.shtml and illuminate it with a strobe light cellphone app like "True Note" apps.apple.com/us/app/true-note-record-player-test/id1200544741 . This will let you see if there is a cyclical speed fluctuation in your platter's rotation: the lines may sway forwards and backwards every rotation (every 1.8 seconds at 33.33 RPM). This would mean you have some sort of rotational wow issue, maybe because your platter needs oiling, your belt is too tight/loose, or is rubbing against some object underneath. Good luck.

A good quality turntable that I've been looking at for quite a while says W&F +/- 0.2% ( so does that mean you could be anywhere in between or even none at all?) And you think some manufacturers may be very conservative with their ratings and this could actually be better? That seems pretty darn low to me anyways. But someone on a forum p*ssed me off lol. The example in your video demo seemed way higher than 0.2% lol :-)

Wow and flutter dissappeared in 1982 with the introduction of CD, the first (widespread) DIGITAL consumer format. When you hear wow and flutter you know that you are listening to some medium invented before that date.

Originally wow and flutter were two categories but they have merged into a single quoted spec in modern times. They are forms of "temporal distortion". The music is coming to you either too quickly or too slowly.

In my Tascam Midistuidio 644 ... when palyback is happening is ok .. but when I record something it got fluttering . And I already replaced the belt. How to fix it? thx
@m.zillch3841
@m.zillch3841 4 года назад
I can't see why there'd be a playback problem only on recordings but have you cleaned the capstan and pinch roller? Are you sure the flutter isn't in the source itself? Maybe the flutter is inaudible in the source and inaudible when you hear the Tascam playing a prerecorded tape but adding all three together (source+record stage+playback stage) reaches the point of audibility? As I state in this video: Wow and Flutter are cumulative. Say theoretically any level below .1% is inaudible. Then .05% would be inaudible,, true, but .05% + .05% +.05% = .15% and THAT'S now audible. Good luck.

IIRC this musical piece, but a different recording, was one of the very first musicial works ever to be recorded electrically, c. 1927. Prior to the mid 1920's musical recording and playback was done mechanically, entirely without electricity.

Nonsense... Everything below 0,5% wow/flutter is imperceptible. Just as everything below 1% THD is imperceptible. You won't even be able to hear speedvariations (too fast or to slow) upto 1,5 %. When music is played instead of sinewaves, the percentages are even higher. Experiment with a tonegenerator and a scope and you'll agree. If you DO hear it however, you either are Data from Startrek or are tricked by your imagination. (Former audio recording engineer, peace out)
