$395 Rubber Bridged Juniper from Orangewood: shorturl.at/lprv3
Orangewood sent me their parlor sized juniper equipped with a rubber bridge to check out. So of course I got loopy and ran it through a small pile of pedals.

THAT'S IT! I don't ever want to hear you say "I don't play guitar well or some sort of crap like that ever again!". This was and incredible demo video, and you did both yourself and Orangewood, a great service. I know this isn't exactly your cup of tea, or wheelhouse based on our conversations, but DAMN DUDE. You nailed it, hit it out of the park. Only you would have thought to throw all those pedals at it, and to come up with some of the riffs within a couple of hours of recording. I can't believe that one of these days soon while making room on the display wall, that one of these will just have to be added. I know you did a demo on your looper pedal, but I need a better instructor. Those dudes; me, myself, and I, don't have a clue on how you made that work so well. Very Impressed, any classes coming soon?🫡👏👍

If I had to guess, a lot of the folks doing this at home aren't grounding the tailpiece, so maybe it has in fact become part of the character of the build. Personally, I'd ground it though. I have an old cheap acoustic collecting dust, a hot rail pickup, and some torn up tires kicking around, maybe I'll throw one of these together for fun.

Check out his Mile End videos on RU-vid with his rubber bridged acoustic. These guitars love ambient pedals and arpeggiating chords. Speaking of grounding, I use 42 gauge magnetic wire from a dead pick up. It will vapourize across the terminals of a 9 volt battery, so theres no chance of getting electrocuted from non Earth grounds w a potential difference.

Although I do love it ...I kinda avoid that muted sound, especially if it is permanent. I do love the flat wounds on it. But the flat wounds are tough on a guitar neck/body ...being of high tension and all. I listened to Orange woods demo videos and it just sounded too dull , my high E needs to ring more than that . I'd have to think this over. I already have an Alvarez -Yairi parlor size with built in passive pickup., so I probably don't need it, but I really love the balls that O-Wood has . It makes people look as you play it .

BTW you can ground any guitar that has not grounded metal tailpiece just by using external wire from jack to the tailpiece, just something with long unshielded ends that could be twisted around the parts. Or if you have cable with crocodile ends that could be used also. Grouning guitar is not so exact like grounding amp or some electrical components. The ground is just to cut the noise trought human body, not to reference real ground (your body is not grounded)

@JoshuaFraserK
@JoshuaFraserK 8 месяцев назад
It looks really nice. But the neck angle is way off if they are gonna use a trapeze tailpiece, plus the tailpiece is too long. I get the rubber bridge thing, it's a great way to get that dead string sound without having to play crusty nasty dead strings. But without enough down pressure on the saddle, you aren't gonna get enough body resonance to matter. The sound should be the fundamental THUD of the string with very little sustain, not splat splat splat. The lack of grounding on the tailpiece + these factors really shows that they are going after this market instead of really making a plug and play option for people who want this style of guitar. I 100% approve of magnetic pickups on acoustic guitars though. They are so so much better than any piezo I've ever heard, even direct into a PA, as long as you have the right strings. I guess I'm just disappointed because the thing looks so nice. Electrically, it sounds fine.

@@60CycleHumcast yeah. They do seem very responsive:) I'd like to hear it with a shorter trapeze and a slightly higher saddle. It wouldn't have to be much. Like a 1/4" spacer added between the nut and the string crossbar (not sure what the term is there). Is the bridge glued to the top of the guitar?

@hughschick6847 8 месяцев назад
I love the concept BUT from the pictures on the OW website it does not intonate properly… Been working on this problem for about a year, now looking at 3D printing an intonated one that fits over a regular bridge so it can be switched fr rubber to regular on the fly.
@Dogdickdale

People intimate them by cutting them. You never see a TOM on an acoustic anyway. Being a few cents out is kind of the point.
@hughschick6847
@hughschick6847 8 месяцев назад
@@Dogdickdale I am making one for electric guitars. and: Why choose to be way out of tune? Not possible to cut them as it is usually just a piece of rubber laid over a bridge made of wood or metal. The rubber is not thick or dense enough to sculpt.
@hughschick6847
@hughschick6847 8 месяцев назад
@@Dogdickdale Even Ruben Cox, the guitar tech who is best known for rubber bridge mods, doesn’t try to intonate them. Google “intonate rubber guitar bridge” and you’ll find exactly squat. And: you radically underestimate the rigor of my process. Forgive me for trusting my own experiments more than (nonexistent) youtube vids about intonating them. Guessing you have approximately zero hours experimenting with this. And durability is a factor you have probably ignored.
@Dogdickdale
@Dogdickdale 8 месяцев назад
@@hughschick6847 its like putting a TOM bridge on a banjo. There’s no point. Someone makes a rubber TOM and someone else makes a rubber JM bridge. Most of the better rubber bridge designs just use a floating arch top bridge and a rubber strip cut in two opposing V’s just like an acoustic saddle. I do experiment. We are both builders. Now show me how you can turn a cheap jazzmaster trem into a B bender. I built a rubber bridge guitar out of a tele body and neck. I used a short trapeze then floated the bridge until it was intonated then pinned it in place. You should try a rubber nut guitar. Nobody made one yet as far as I know.
