Street researcher and consultant Christopher Littlefield exposes our hidden relationship to recognition in this lively and eye-opening talk. He discusses how we actually aren't very good at accepting compliments and often we don't even know it. He exposes the crazy ways we manipulate others with recognition and the profound difference a simple compliment can make in someone's life. Christopher asks us to rethink our relationship to recognition starting by asking others the question "What do you want to be acknowledged for?" ‪Through this question, he helps us realize that most of the time we don't actually want to be acknowledged for the result, but for all the ups and downs, the challenges and barriers, we overcame to produce the result.
Christopher Littlefield is the founder of AcknowledgmentWorks a training and consulting firm that is committed to transforming the way that people work together. Over the last four years, he has conducted over 350 street interviews around the globe trying to understand the human experience of giving and receiving recognition. He has translated these findings into talks, workshops, and personal performance coaching services geared towards helping teams and individuals develop the critical skills and self-awareness needed to produce extraordinary results at work and at home. Chris works internationally and is based jointly in Lebanon and the United States.

About TEDx
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. My Dad was a headmaster and when he passed away my mum got a whole load of letters from ex pupils of his saying what a difference he had made to their lives his believing in them. I think praise where praise is due may be difficult to take but that and encouragement always stimulate people to do the best they can and they make for a much better working environment. Thanks for a very stimulating talk, Chris. Really!!

Thank you Chris for this brilliant talk. I was one of those non-believers in acknowledgment and recognition, but now I know how powerful it is in building trust in both personal and professional relationships. Thank you once again :)

Thank you everyone for the amazing comments! What I have found is that no one needs recognition, but life is just a whole lot better when it is there! When people feel recognized(this is not just verbal recognition but also autonomy at work, new responsibilities, creative license on a project, etc.) they feel valued...when people feel valued they tend to value those who value them.

I'm giving you RECOGNITION. Get talk with an important message that narcissists - especially in my home town of LA - need to hear! It's weird how I am SO recognized in my career, yet the ONE recognition I need to hear is, "You are so thin!"

I'm a workaholic, programmed to evaluate myself based on everyday's work. But COVID19 lockdowns mean no work and sadly no peers. Being forced to evaluate this mysterious soup of self-value, peer recognition & acknowledgement and even love is hard. Thanks for your wonderful insights and clear talk.

I fell into the trap of me "taking recognition" very comfortably when i first heard this talk, but what i did not realize is that i also have to give it more often. Now, i am doing this :) Thanks Chris.
