Huge thanks to the team from Hosa Technologies for custom making us the two 100' instrument cables for this video! If you need great cables, check out: hosatech.com/
You’d think a long guitar cable would be a more useful investment than a short one, right? Well, there’s a reason you rarely see guitar cables longer 25 feet. There’s a very important reason for this, and in this video we’ll be using two 100-foot-long cables from Hosa Technology to show you exactly how cable length affects your guitar tone.
As you listen to the sound examples, you’ll hear that as the cable gets longer, there’s less and less top-end on the signal. This “darkening” of your guitar tone happens because of something called capacitance. To keep it simple, think of it this way: The longer the cable, the more capacitance is introduced. The higher the capacitance, the less high-end in your guitar tone.
One way to deal with this loss of high frequencies is to add a buffer pedal to your signal chain. Guitar effect pedals are either buffered bypass or true bypass, so you’ll need one with a buffered bypass to do this. While adding a buffer between two 100-foot cables won’t make it sound like you’re playing with 10-foot cables, it’ll still make a noticeable difference and minimize the signal degradation you’re experiencing.
Now that you’ve heard the differences between cable lengths, try experimenting with your own rig to find that “sweet spot” and achieve the guitar tone you’re chasing.

That does it! I'm only using 3 foot or shorter cables from now on.

A buffer does not 'try and reintroduce high end' neither is necessary to use multiple buffers along a daisy chain of long cables. What a buffer does is act as an impedance converter. The input of a buffer (should) present a 1Megohm load to the guitar, so it is like plugging in to the input of most guitar amplifiers, normally via a fairly short cable otherwise you will get loss in the cable from the guitar to the buffer. The output of the buffer will be low impedance. A low impedance can drive a long length of cable without signal loss and with less sensitivity to picking up external hum and noise. The buffer is simply isolating the guitar from the loading effect of a long cable. Guitars (and basses) with active internal electronics normally have a low output impedance and will therefore happily drive long cables. Les Paul used a passive low impedance system on the Les Paul Recording guitar. If history were a little different all electric guitars would be low impedance and cable loss would not be a problem. A buffer will introduce some low end roll off due to the nature of electronics, which a straight cable connection will not.

Is it capacitance or resistance? I feel like there would be more resistance as the length increases

The added capacitance ...seems to be adding some compression also....that's what I'm hearing...besides the hi end roll off. Just saying...it's there.

The 200 feet does make a pretty cool effect, IMO. I'm guessing the distance also adds some phase non-liniarities. Definitely not the same as throwing a cap in series.

The buffer is AFTER the first 100ft cable, right?

I've always wanted to try an FM (or even AM) broadcast and get progressively farther and farther away. Should get some real NIN tones.

You would feel the difference most when you back off the volume.

Cool. I prefer Mogami but I have some Monsters too. I just like the lifetime warranty on higher end cables.

Almost every cable comes with a lifetime warranty, at least when it comes to name brands and not direct-from-China stuff. 100 or 200ft of cable no matter if it's Hosa, Mogami, Monster, Planet Waves will exhibit the same downsides. It's a byproduct of an unbalanced signal as you increase capacitance and interference.

@@MusoraMedia Mogami are very good too and I agree. I can definitely hear a difference between a high end cable like Monster versus cheap cables
