Hey Jake, love all these videos! I'm a worship director for our youth in CA and each service I had to figure out a way to sing, play, run tracks, and MD. Using my helix, I found out a way for any helix user to play guitar, run tracks, sing, and MD to band. If you're interested in this set up that may help a handful of leaders I'd love to get connected with you. Keep up the great helpful videos.

Great video! My wife took over as worship leader at our church but she has to spend so much time focusing on the vocalists because they aren’t really trained. I told her a few weeks ago let me worry about the band. I drum primarily but also do keys and bass from time to time. In my in ears I have everyone turned up and quite frequently the team hears me yelling out chords from behind the drum cage. I was thinking just weeks ago that I should start actually directing the band more. Do you have any recommendations for how to mic a MD in a drum cage properly without having all the drums overtaking the sound?
@zacharymcleod8262
@zacharymcleod8262 2 года назад
You’ll need a super tight mic that only picks up stuff if you’re right up on it. There’s a lot of different options out there that aren’t super pricey if you’re willing to go wired.

After operating without an MD for so long, I think it would be more disruptive than beneficial at this point. I say this only because we have been running IEMs for the past 8 years. Anything that an MD may interject during a service, we cover during our Mon. rehearsal. We then do an early AM run through Sunday before service and we're ready to go. I'm just not sure what an MD would add to our Worship music. If you started out that way, I could understand the benefit.
@jairusdixon1758
@jairusdixon1758 2 года назад
I feel that. I grew up with no IEM’s, just vibes. Had to learn musicality and read minds through the chemistry of playing with someone. It sounds weird, but it was a big foundation of being adaptable and in a pocket

You are right! This dead mic stuff--horrible! This is one of the reasons I stopped playing in the worship band. Gone are the days that sensitive and seasoned musicians connected together and in its place is someone in a dead mic yelling commands… horrible. And then backing tracks? Your team cannot produce all parts live? And then you need a click track to take all emotion from the song by being rigid? What’s your drummer doing then? The dead mic stuff and backing tracks are what makes worship less about moving in the moment and more robotic. Ugh.
@bluzzjazz
@bluzzjazz 10 месяцев назад
I hear you. I will say I don't mind the click track. I'm still tapping in my delays, since I don't have midi to Ableton at this point. If we do ever loop in some keys or something else, I just have that channel off anyway. @@jonpaul70

So do you Romando have another 9-5 job outside of this ? Because I’m the band leader for my newly established church, and I have a 9-5 Monday - Friday job, with 2 kids and another on the way... and this looks like it must take up a lot of time to prepare. I struggle to practise my instrument more than 2 hours each night after work because my kids always want my attention when I get home. We have band practise twice a week for about 3-4 hours each. I have ableton lite atm which I got with my new midi keyboard but I don’t have MacBook yet to run it on... so I’m on the hunt for one. I also noticed you do your ableton set up on a desktop rather than a laptop... does that mean you can set up your whole program and then transfer it to your MacBook/iPad and take that with you to church ? Cos I would prefer to create my ableton session on a desktop (bigger screen). Thank you so much for this upload. And sorry for the long essay lol. Cheers. How much time a day do you spend prepping all this in ableton, band app etc ?

Hello I’m currently the worship leader at our small but growing church, while having to MD the band. How ideal is it to do both? Can it be possible? Any recommendations? I once had two mics, one for talkback and the other to lead, but found it a little confusing to go back and forth! However, this video did help in terms of the MD tasks etc. Thank you and would love a response!

Eleanne Bernard Hi I’m currently singing and playing piano while MD’ing the band as well. Instead of using 2 mics, check out these 2 products: 1) Palmer MI DMS 2) Radial Hotshot DM1 They both work the same way. It allows you to plug your microphone into it, and then it’ll split it into two separate channels. 1 for FOH and the other can go to your bands In ear monitors. To change it from one channel to the other, you just press the button. I’ll be purchasing the Palmer soon and I’ll have it next to my keyboard foot pedal, so when I need to give instructions, I’ll tap and hold it with my foot, sending the signal to my band, then once I’m done, i release the button and then I’m back to the main FOH speakers. I hope that helps. 😊

@@RexyFan It's a way of redirecting your mic from the FOH (mains) to the IEM's (monitors) so that you can push a button and talk to your team with the same mic you lead the song with. This is the toggle switch I use: www.radialeng.com/product/hotshot-dm1

a bad sound can be very distracting to the congregation and we want to honor God with our gifts and talents, its our service unto Him to be excellent. To submit to an MD even if you are the "more experienced/skilled" player is also a lesson on humility. It kills pride in the flesh, and you learn to submit. Lastly, we audition members because we want to set them up for success. imagine if you completely sucked at guitar, but led worship anyway? you would be in a very embarrassing situation. and end up hating worship, hating people and hating church. If you are lower in skill, serve in a safer environment such as small groups, where the risk is lower, you dont stress yourself to perform. If I put a poor guitarist up on stage i'd be a poor leader who doesnt know how to take care of his congregation.

How would u treat a player that is disabled with a neurological disease like M.S. were time could be an issue ,who has been playing 20 years in 3 churches ,would like say you have be attending for 6 months to a year before you can play , some problems can change greatly in that time .Truthful answer cause the question was .It happened to me twice ..At this point been playing bass 41 years with no clic tracs and a head/cab in repectful volume ...And everynody has a horror story about amps but if ee are submitted to God there should not be any problems with any of this !

Why does worship need a musical director? Just worship God. So many mega churches so damn focused on the production and attracting new people just so they can take their tithe money. God doesn’t care how you sound right? If no one worships the rocks will cry out in worship. It was never like his before. It’s juts a production to wolves.
@logankolarick1646
@logankolarick1646 4 года назад
As a worship pastor, I'm very aware of how bad sound/ bad musicianship can completely ruin a worship set. Our jobs are to make the time of worship as fluid and perfect as we can. The less distractions, the better. God DOES care how you sound. Psalms 33:3 says to play skillfully for the Lord. That includes being prepared and having structure. Just getting on stage and winging it is a quick way to be sure no one in the room has an encounter with God... Also, most new church-goers don't tithe.

As a musical director, I try my best to bring cohesiveness and excellence to the table with everyone I work with, no matter where they’re at. It says to “sing to Him a new song, play SKILLFULLY and shout for joy.” We help facilitate that, because to be quite honest, when there’s an intersection of earnest worship combined with skill, it can go quite far. If you don’t understand it or don’t require it in your expression of worship then that’s fine, but please don’t denigrate our efforts. We do it for God too.
@ActionZach
@ActionZach 4 года назад
Odum Abekah “We do it for God too.” Like God is an after thought. That’s the thing about you pretentious “worship” directors. Like I said it’s all about the production. Your statement solidified that. I play drums for my church. No director, just a sound guy, and they don’t flip out when one minor things mess up or goes wrong. The modern churches have lost their way. They want to be the biggest, the most fun, they want to “attract” instead of going out and saving souls. But hey, I guess worship is only “playing guitar, or singing a high note.”
@odumabekah4000
@odumabekah4000 4 года назад
Action Zach Why is a journey towards growth in how I express my love and thanks to God a negative? You can praise Him in so many ways! To the world, sure an MD is also a “profession”, and one that I want to invest and develop in, because He has called me to serve in that capacity. It’s so much more than just “musical perfection” - I don’t ask for that, I ask for growth of those that I’m humbled and privileged to work with. If that’s all you see then you miss the life, fellowship with people and chances to walk together with Christ that it entails. But I will not take your spirit of anger because I want to do my best, and continue to steward the gifts and blessings that He gave me - gifts I most certainly know I don’t deserve. We should be encouraging each other to use our talents for the kingdom, not bury them.

Every ministry needs some leadership. I came into leadership because, we haven't anyone else, who can spend the time, plays an instrument like guitar or piano, knows how to do an arrangement and is experienced with mixing console and knows many songs and can read music.
