hi good video so informative, unfortunatly my neighbours have redone their garden with all stone work, its in my opinion horrible with no personality...wish more people would think about wildlife instead of easy a garden can be maintained. my garden has plants trees and weve just done a wildlife pond, i put up a feeding table for the birds too so hopefully i can attract more creatures in the coming months.

Also I will now look into getting some bushes for the back of my garden as I wanted to put something along my back fence as it looks ugly just plain wood.. I'll be researching the bushes for all the new wildlife I'm now getting.. Thank you so much for your videos I'm learning so much from watching them..

Thank you so much, this is such a great video, it's well put together and so informative. It's great to learn about the hedgehogs and bats and how we can help them. Well be borrowing some of these tips and putting them into practice up here in Cheshire. Many blessings

Thank you. You've just reminded me that I've just left the video on at the bird feeder again to see what comes to the bird feeders this year! Must go down and turn it off.

I'd love an update on how your getting on with attracting wildlife
@TheMiddlesizedGarden

I will definitely put that on the list for next year, and at the moment, it's looking good. I have seen a hummingbird hawk moth (it's a moth!) in the front garden and a good range of birds in the back. We seem to have bats and also stag beetles, both of which can be rare in the UK.

@@TheMiddlesizedGarden excellent, I've just got started feeding birds with fat balls and peanuts, the birds seem a bit shy so far

This year I started doing companion gardening. I bought some mixed bird seeds and placed water for the birds. I'm having a difficult time planting native plants or plants that would not be invasive. I do want to have plants for pollinators and birds. It's just that everything I had selected is considered invasive. Where can I go to get help? I'm from the U.S. Arkansas.

This is great! I'm trying to find out more. I have space for a pond, but there are some plants that I think are non native, and I'd love to know where I can find advice on what to pull up and what to leave.
@TheMiddlesizedGarden

Everything I've read suggests that you shouldn't worry too much about what is native and non-native. It's just important not to have anything that gets so invasive in your area that it takes over. Here's a link to the World Wildlife Gardening Forum with a study that says that 'there's a mass of evidence that non-native plants are of value to wildlife in our gardens' and I've heard this elsewhere too. There will be a list of 'invasive plants' for your country or area, and it's worth finding this online, because these plants can be damaging. They can out compete other plants. But otherwise, wildlife friendly plants have flowers with open centres, berries that birds can eat and that is all that is needed. www.wlgf.org/native_non_native.pdf Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for your answer, and I have to apologize for having made you a little confused. After watching this video, what I called “bamboo-tube shaped nests” in the last comment has been turned out to be the “bird feeders”. Since the bird feeders appeared in some other video in a very brief period of time, I misconceived them as nests, like those of woodpeckers. I am very sorry. It is amazing that the bird feeders have been there for 40 years and that you have taken them over from your predecessor. Your predecessor must be as wildlife friendly as you. I have known that British gardening is wonderful and charming, and attracts people all over the world, but I did not notice that it also included the aspect of wildlife gardening until I watched this video. I am really impressed with it. Is it possible to install a wooden nest and a bird feeder in a very tiny garden like mine without any pond? Are bird feeders like those seen in the video commercially available in U.K. or were they hand made by the predecessor?
@TheMiddlesizedGarden
@TheMiddlesizedGarden 4 года назад
Don't worry! Yes, the bird feeders are commercially available, usually at most garden centres and pet shops. When it comes to making or placing nest boxes, I would follow advice from the RSPB see:www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/how-you-can-help-birds/nestboxes/nestboxes-for-small-birds/making-and-placing-a-bird-box/ And you don't need a pond, but you do need a source of water, such as a bird bath. In hot weather these dry out quickly so keep it topped up. Hope that helps, with best wishes, Alexandra

Good, informative tips, however, I found the constant bangs on the mic too distracting (maybe it was just my headphones, i'm not sure). Might have been nice to see/hear from the bloke who did the advising on what could be done, instead of just a wee shot of him - although, maybe he preferred it that way! Good advice, thanks for sharing :)

Thank you, such comments are very helpful. This was one of my first videos so there were alot of errors with both sound and video (hence not having as much of Simon as we should have done!) I'm hoping current video interviews don't have either 'bangs' (called plosives, I think - I've managed to get rid of them by draping a scarf over the microphone!) and have a bit more of the person who's talking.

How do you keep squirrels out of the bird feeders?
@TheMiddlesizedGarden
@TheMiddlesizedGarden Год назад
We buy 'squirrel proof' bird feeders, and there are now a selection of them on the market. Avoid the cage types as squirrels sometimes get into the cage and then can't get out. Two brands we've found good are Finches Friend and Roam Wild: www.finchesfriend.com/ and roamwildproducts.co.uk/products/roamwild-squirrel-proof-bird-feeders However, nothing wholly keeps pests away - it just gives the birds a better chance of getting most of the food.
