Yes! Just graduated 2 years ago at age 51 with a degree in English Literature and a minor in Women and Gender studies. As much as I love to read and write (I write poetry) it was intense. The hardest for me was the language class also but I loved learning how the English language evolved. Thanks for sharing. Love your content.

Wow! I really like these videos, I swear! I’ve graduated from an English major last year in Spain and in here we have to study both literature and linguistics is pretty much equal distribution, so I love to see what you guys who study literature throughout the whole degree read and learn about. I ended up specialising in linguistics (much to everyone’s shock), but I always feel like our knowledge of literature could be so very much improved from day 1 when I see people like you talking about it... anyways, just great! Congrats on the content, as always. Hope you have a great week! 🥰💫

Love this video! As an English/Education major, it's wonderful to see so many similar novels read in completely different contexts than my experience. I was surprised there was no Pynchon in your time class (especially with his fascination/obsession with entropy). My thesis is on the use of space-time, especially as it relates to trauma; jealous I couldn't have taken that class!

It's always so interesting to hear you talk about how your degree work! You're so clear when you explain. Also, it was quite fun to hear you talk about the "nightmare course" because as a student of foreign languages (and because of how the course is structured in my country) I've been studying linguistics for four years at this point ahahah. I agree with you, the part about social lingustics is more interesting (personally, I love the story of languages and the family trees) and the part that I have more problems with is phonology😓 (English phonology is particularly bad). It was my first linguistic course in my university and I considered dropping out

Also if you enjoy mythological retellings, highly recommend A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes! I graduated with my B.A. in English in 2019 and it is so lovely to see what other English majors read! You are absolutely correct-- there is an incredible amount of diversity within each school's department of English. Any English majors out there I highly recommend taking English courses that give you a lot of literature beyond simply American/ British (especially if you live in the US.) Also, PLEASE take elective courses in either grant writing, business writing, etc, because landing a job, whether or not it has anything to do with your degree, is extremely difficult. (As someone from California/ Oregon.) I wish you all the best of luck and if you're interested in the major-- do it, or at least try a few courses! Love your videos and recommendations Emmie!

I've seen many US programs include World Literature courses. But looking at electives, I've found some really specific stuff, like the one on space and time Emma mentioned. I'd look at the electives in each program to see if they match your interests. I'm currently doing my degree online, but the courses are very generic and there aren't enough electives that interest me. So I'm looking to transfer ASAP.

Absolutely loved this video, Emma! I'm doing my Honours year in Literature, and you going through all the different courses you did in the second year made me so nostalgic for the courses I did that year as well. But goodness, we didn't have an English Language course to do. That sounds ROUGH! :D (and in a mild way super interesting if it wasn't as full-on as all that). I kind of wish I had History of Theory and Criticism that looked at older criticism/theory because the Theory and Criticism course I took just started from F.R. Leavis, Matthew Arnold and went on to contemporary times but that course was BRILLIANT. Your Deformed Space & Time course sounds SO SO incredible. I did a Gothic Literature & Culture course that covered a few of the same ideas and it was so captivating. One of my favourite professors did his doctorate research on The House of Leaves! I still need to read it though, it sounds bonkers! My other favourite courses were Poetry and the Imagination (lots of Romantic poets!), Birth of the Modern, Jane Austen and Her Influence, Shakespeare and His Contemporaries, and Postmodernism. Oh my goodness, good old Lyotard and Frederick Jameson! I wrote on Lyotard and his critique of the metanarratives in one of my final Lit essays for undergrad, and looked at Calvino's If On A Winter's Night a Traveller and DeLillo's White Noise. Crazy fun :) Thank you so much for sharing, Emma! Wonderful video. You're so right, it's always so endlessly fascinating talking with other English lit students about what books and courses they got to study in their degree. Random, but as someone who keeps failing abysmally at this, I'm just so impressed by your level of class/lecture note-taking skills. Would you be willing to share more about how you do those?

Rehab, what's it like to study English at Cario University? I'm originally from Egypt but have lived most of my life in Australia).

@@joychalaby oh hey there! wow so good to find someone from Egypt here ! .. I really enjoy studying here tbh .. i’m taking the credit hours program in the Faculty of Arts and i’d say it’s such a wonderful program! we have dr.khaled tawfik if you ever heard about him.. he’s so good.. he makes the department 100% better than the usual english department you know .. really enjoying it so far .. i’m in my second year 😊

I love your notes! Color-coded, combination of handwritten and typed. "The girl with the pearl earring -- it's not me." That cracked me up.

I am so excited to hear that I am not the only one who basically hated the History of English Language. I had to take that course in my bachelor's degree and suffered so much!

'Dreams in the witch house' is my all time favorite Lovecraft story. I was interested in what you said about trauma effecting perception. I remember it most for its dark haunted ambiance. Glad you liked it, I will never forget that story.

I would recommend also "Aspects of the novel" by E.M. Forster.
