@@Backroad_Junkie distilled ginger sounds awesome. Seems like Nonino is making a commercially available version so you might not have to produce it yourself! I'd love to see some east Asian fruits used for distilling. Yuzu (a lemon-like citrus that's often used as a gin botanical) could be cool, but it might not have enough sugar. I think the pick is Mikans, which are a unique kind of Japanese tangerine that are incredibly tasty. Vanilla kaki (a type of persimmon) could also be really cool, they supposedly have a sort of pear and apricot flavor with a bourbon vanilla accent. Sounds like a great combo to me.

Hey Guys, I live in south Texas and have played around with the prickly pear cactus fruit (tunas) for years. Have made wine from it and also a concentrated syrup to add to margaritas, etc. but never had the ability to distill. Maybe a cactus distilled spirit has already been done, but to me that would be a real Texas thing. Keep up the good work, love your content.

The distillation will take off the molecules with the lowest boiling points first. What probably happened is the water and chemicals responsible for scent were transferred first; scent because those are supposed to vaporize in room temperature. After that it started taking some of the flavourings, and what you'd likely see is that the sugars and dyes would be left last. That's why you got a very watery product with lots of scent; all the scent boiled off first and was recondensed into the product.

Here’s an idea to try. Miracle berries, the fruit. On their own, they alter flavor perceptions. But I don’t know if they’ve ever been made into a drink form. Could be very interesting if the flavor altering properties carry over.

@keircampbell9374
@keircampbell9374 2 года назад
@@ajsparx4133 I’m not an expert but couldn’t you just distill it more slowly with a very low heat? Correct me if I’m wrong but it’s like when you make meth and the evaporation goes up and impurities are left behind while the pure liquid drips into a new container, yes? If I’m correct, would that mean it’s theoretically possible to just do it on a very low heat to maintain it? … just realized I know how to make meth more than whisky. It’s from breaking bad I promise.
@ajsparx4133
@ajsparx4133 2 года назад
@@keircampbell9374 pretty sure that wouldn't help either, you have to at least get close to the boiling point of ethanol or it will just evaporate faster than it condenses, and that's hotter than most proteins denature, (I think). Plus they're much heavier than gaseous ethanol and not many (if any) would come thru. Flavor compounds like terpenes can boil at lower temperatures without being damaged and become part of the final product, but glycoproteins like miraculin won't survive. Easier to just add it to a batch of shine, but even then it may come apart just from being in ethanol. Idk I suppose

A better way to do these experiments would be to take a specific gravity of red bull, then add enough white sugar to get a higher potential alcohol. Then put it in the air still. In germany we have a fairly new process for fermenting yeast killing liquids, like beers over 15% alcohol concentration. In a diverging-converging steel tank you add fresh yeast on top and while it is dying it ferments a bit more and the dead yeast sinks to the bottom and is extracted in a continuous way.

Distilling different things into alcohol is always super cool, but I can't stop thinking about what whiskey could be like using more exotic grains as a mash. Things like amaranth, teff, etc. I think this could be a super cool long term project that could get you some amazing new flavors. Edit: you could also experiment with this specifically to produce tasty newmake whiskeys, which would give you a lot more control over the flavors of the newmake and also be way faster than making a whole aged whiskey.

Guys, you removed a huge part of the most volatile compounds that were present in red bull before adding the vodka. In the first few distillation runs, the still was probably running close to 100°C, since you were evaporating water. After you added the vodka, and the still would probably be running closer to 73°C, which is the temperature that alcohol evaporates. Whatever was left, if it didn't evaporate at 100°C, it isn't very likely that it would evaporate at 73°C. I think it was a bad move doing things in this way.

Though probably done already, I would love to see if natural flavored Root Beer that's made with real cane sugar could be distilled. Or any of those classic soda's, ie Ginger Ale, Black Cherry, Cream Soda, etc.

Red Bull as with a lot of energy drinks tend have a cough syrup effect on my pallet. No surprise the yeast all found there wings and zoomed off to heaven in this episode.

after watching this video, I am reminded of me and my cousin's chemistry project experiments back in high school. I distilled various sugar rich beverages using this Pyrex glass distiller... while my cousin tried various ratios of yeast and apple juice and tried to ferment them. We sealed various samples in test tubes with cork and, since we didn't have a test tube rack, we fixed the test tubes on the wall with packaging tape. We didn't know that fermentation creates a lot of gas, so one hot afternoon, while watching TV, we heard consecutive loud pops and fizzing sounds. We saw all our samples popped open, splash patterns on the wall and floor (like a giraffe ji$$ed at our room), and ended up with no samples to submit with our report.

I wood find the most concentrated form of red bull syrup and add it to a sugar shine mash. I have done other sodas this way and it really has turned out nice.

So I mashed in with straight up the yellow vitamin water, added more sugar, and some good yeast. The vitamin water has only one preservative so it actually busted off pretty well. Honestly its one of my favorite distillates I've ever boiled off. It was fantastic. I makes it all the time in my little air stihl.

Fresh spruce, jackpine, or douglas fir buds right after they break so they are full of sugar. Taste them in the spring...very sweet and citrusy

This would be right up my alley. For whatever reason, call me a sadist, I've always loved the taste of redbull. I love sour candy of all varieties and I always used to be reminded of sour candy when I drank red bulls. I drank it because I enjoyed how it tasted, at least when super cold, more so than I drank it for the energy "buzz" aspect of it. As far as alcohol goes, at least when I was younger, redbull was frequently a part of the alcoholic beverages I drank all the time, whether it was just vodka and redbull or jager bombs, whatever. My taste for alcohol has definitely changed since then(more of a wine drinker these days) but I still enjoy the taste of red bull a lot, I just don't consume nearly as much of it as I used to(I used to buy cases of it and keep it in the house all the time, my health be damned).

I know this is an old video but you should totally make either sour patch kids or jolly rancher distilled!

I don't know enough about whiskey, to know if there is an oat-based whiskey. That's what I'd like to see. Oat or Oatmeal whiskey.

Red Booze gives you wangzzz! Not gonna lie, I was expecting something wangzz related in the shenanigans portion of the video but I can completely understand why there's not. Loved all the iso shots of the facial reactions. Great editing. Well done sirs and madam!

I think you need to make that with the fruit that you pick up on the nose. Use some cherries, pineapple, and apple juices with the Red Bull and vodka. You might make something crazy good.

Certain distilled high sugar vegetables sounds interesting to me. especially the ones that maintain sweet pleasant smells when wet cooking. Like parsnips or celeriac, but not like swede or carrot. I associate like boiled swede or carrot with a really acrid weird smell.

Maybe a bit hard to get in Texas, but distill spruce buds! As far as I know, you can make beer out of them, and they're actually edible as is. No idea about the sugar content, but I'd see the taste going over well to an actual whiskey.
