Gothic is germanic language. More specifically Gothic is east germanic branch of the germanic family along with vandalic and burgundian. Unlike other Germanic language Gothic still retained many archaic features from proto Germanic that are directly derived from proto indoor European. Gothic still retained synthetic verb system gothic was a pro drop language and Gothic fully retained inflectional passive voice from Proto germanic and case system of declensions. A little. The Goths (aka Geats) were basically from modern day Sweden. Literally from Gotaland. Hell, there's even a city called Gothenburg. Weird, huh? Added note: the Ostro in Ostrogoth means East or Eastern. And Visi in Visigoth? You guessed it... West or Western. And, if I recall correctly... Beowulf was a "Geat" It's all a bit more complicated than how I simplified it. But that ahould help the average layman gain a bit of grasp.

I don't remember the spelling but I remember a kind of pronunciation "thiumagus meins leegiths in garda ?uslitha? harduba balwiths" (my servant is lying in his bed being extremely tormented) from the Silver Code. A nice exercise we did during our post-graduate studies at the linguistic university in 1999-2000

My first name is actually gothic in origin: Ferdinand (as well as other variants such as Fernando) comes from Frith (protector) Nanth (bold, courage). English wikipedia has a more general germanic origin though...
