For everyone's info I have just gotten a quote for Solawrap. It's pricing out around $2.50/sqft, for 165' of 6' wide roll including the installation clips and shipping from Manitoba to the Okanagan.
Hey Rob, just saw you on with Curtis Stone today. I'm planning a 14'x16' lean to greenhouse and you scared me about mold. I didn't consider it before. What can I do to prevent mold? Can I put up a poly between the greenhouse and house? Thanks!!
If it costs $ 70,000 and I assume the depreciation period is 20 years, then it is $ 3,500 per year => $ 292 per month. Can that house, with a relatively limited area for crops, save me that amount compared to the alternatives? The house is way too expensive, mate.
too expensive ? what is it worth to be able to independently feed yourself / family (w/o fossil fuel inputs for heating) 12 months a year in most climates ? with the way the world has been lately (unrest, pandemic(s), climate disruptions, peak oil) what is the ability to survive, thrive and prosper worth ? it’s only money man. and it’s not just spending cash, it is an investment. if you were to sell a property with a greenhouse like this on it, you would certainly be able to recoup at a minimum, your outlay (imho).
If you were not interested in self-sustainability and simply looking at this monetarily your reasoning would have some merit especially few years ago. The world has changed drastically in 2020. With looming uncertainty and a "reset" on its way it's sensible to spend your money now on useful assets like this while your dollar still has value. Considering all the risks and uncertainty in the world an assets with a 50-60+ year lifespan (not 20) that can pay dividends in the form of food sound like a great investment to me.
