What Does Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue Grass From Seed Look Like

Here are some closeup shots of young Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue. I've got examples that are densely seeded, thinly seeded, and even an example of a single 7-week old K31 plant growing all by itself.
Kentucky 31 fescue is a cool season grass that is frequently seeded in lawns in the northern parts of the US and Canada and it's sometimes mixed with fine fescues for shade tolerance.
I wanted to see what it looked like in a controlled environment so that I could identify it in lawns and compare it to other grass types.
The seed I planted for this experiment was purchased on Amazon. Here's an affiliate link: www.amazon.com...
Although there are premium seed suppliers out there which may offer a higher quality plant when grown I don't see any reason to over-spend on KY31 as it's not usually considered superior to other TTTF cultivars.

When I moved to my new house 2 yeas ago in northern Illinois, my yard was awful. Not cared for, poor soil, weeds etc. I planted with K31, and I LOVE it. It's deeper roots are especially beneficial in the dry season. When everyone else's bluegrass is browning, the K31 is still green. Great video!

K-31 is a pasture grass. It has a wide, course leaf blade...undesirable in a residential lawn.

I am really curious how the hell does this video only have 800 views. This is close up, scientifically controlled high quality content! I've always wondered what different types of grass look like up close. Because all grass pretty much looks the same 5 feet away through a camera...

Some recommendations, go 4K, and go really up close, and if needed, take pictures, because the resolution will be much better, youtube compresses the video a lot more than stable pictures. Also, maybe show how dense you planted the seeds when you are planting, I'm really curious how dense the seeds looked like to get to the thickness of the green pot.

@@J235304204 im going to say he seeded the green pot with a heavy seeding similar to last pink cup that he seeded heavy. He tried doing it to the 10lbs per 1000 sq foot the best he could

Finally, someone shoes the blades multiplying. I was afraid my seeds were producing one blade per seed. Lol.

I’ve been battling with K31 in my yard for awhile now. The original owner mixed it in with fine fescue and it looks like a weed against the fine fescue. So I’m digging it out a few pieces at a time because it is scattered everywhere. It’s tough to dig out, and grass killer doesn’t work on it well. A lot of the bunches I have dug up also have lots of disease on them.

How doesnt grass killer work on it? When I spray glyphosate, EVERYTHING dies. Bermuda, nutsedge, small bushes that I didn’t dig the root of. Try using more concentrated glyphosate

Love this channel Isn't K31 considered a low quality cultivar of TTTF? I think K31 hasn't been improved at all with other cultivars. Its still the same strain that was found on that hill over 60 years ago. Is K31 even an actual "Turf Type" Tall Fescue?, or just a regular Tall Fescue? Also as I understand the newer Turf Type Tall Fescues are bred to get away from the traditional fescue thick wide grass blade and have narrow blades, as those wide blades are considered undesirable... Thoughts? Not sure why some people like k31 so much? Any insight on That?

Hey again RJ, K31 is a natural cultivar of the rough fescue brought to the states in the 1800s. It is more turf like than old tall fescue but TTTF is much better for lawns than k31 ever will be. TTTF has been bred to have more color, shorter blades, softer less think foliage, and better resistance to stresses like disease, drought, and heat. There are new cultivars being created to even have slight rizomatic qualities as well. K31 is cheap and thats why its used in fields and rustic large lawns or in myvcase on a hillside. Tttf doesn't have to be very expensive to be a step up from k31.

Thanks Vinny, these vids are weird to make even though I really like this project. Im excited to start my fine fescue vids too but it just takes so long for them all to grow from seed, lol.

I noticed the established KY31 in my lawn is more prone to fungus compared to newer TTTF cultivars. What are your observations?

K31 Tall Fescue is way stronger and more resistant to heat and drought than most grasses. Even when you think it's gone it will come back. Regular turf Fescue will need to be redone every fall. K31 is only more lime colored than regular lawn grass, but will not let you down in dependability heavy traffic from big animals and lawn parties all Summer 😁

AverageJoe I just over seeded my entire lawn with the turf tall fescue and k31 and perineal rye. I went crazy... Will I have to do that every year?
@averagejoe3312
@averagejoe3312 4 года назад
@@CrAzYAuNtSiSsy No! The K31 is pretty much there to stay, unless it doesn't rain for 90 days. I've seen it withstand no rain for a month, big animals walking on and dogs peeing on it, and just about whatever you can throw at it. The Rye grass may need over seeding every year.

@@averagejoe3312 Whew!!! Thanks so much! I am here in upper New York and I did this weird concoction using " GreenView Fairway Formula Grass Seed Turf Type Tall Fescue Sun & Shade Blend" and "Pennington Smart Tall Fescue Grass Seed" and Kentucky 31 Fescue" and "Pennington Smart Seed Perennial Rye Grass" hoping something will work! It's day 2 and I have been watering morning and then about 5:00 p.m. After I put all the seed down, I watered then added the Espoma Organic Lawn Starter Seed fertilizer. All this thinking I know what I am doing. Rrrr.. somethings gotta work! Do you think all will be well? lolol. ??? I love your videos. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and knowledge.

@@CrAzYAuNtSiSsy My cousins live up there near Syracuse. The grass should be fine. Fescue is a very hardy grass because of very strong roots. It will be helpful if you put down some fertilizer in spring to help it out. During the summer when it's warmer, mow at 2.5 inches. That's the sweet spot for Rye and Fescue. Just before winter comes, mow down to 1.5 inches or so. The roots are what makes Fescue so strong. If you suffer from drought, a little water will help. I don't think living up there will be that bad. When you over seed it, I'd use Red Fescue. It's a colder weather fine Fescue. You have blended types so far and the K31 will be the toughest. Use Milorgianite to fertalize with. It's great stuff and won't harm the planet. If it doesn't come to life right after winter, give it a month. Fescue has a tendency to be slow like that and then when you start mowing you'll wish you could stop. Just let it establish itself well before your first mow.

@@averagejoe3312 I found your grass video and subscribed! SO nice to hear the thoughts of someone who knows what they are talking about. What happened was so weird. I have always used the Milorgianite, last year my lawn was the envy of my neighbors.. this year not so much! I love the Milorgianite and will probably keep using it, but in June, we were having a heatwave and drought and I put down the Milorgianite like a dope and a few weeks later my lawn almost died. Brown spots all over. So bad that one part of the lawn is dead. Soooo I started watering like a mad women and nothing soooo then I put down the PGF complete.(I have spend so much money.) When I tugged on the dead grass, it pulled out so easy like it wasn't even connected to the soil, so I knew it was dead not dormant and just ended up giving up. Watering dead grass so a bit silly. Saw your video and that's when the reseeding came into play. After I reseeded I put down the Espoma Organic Lawn Starter 3-6-3. I was wondering if I could have hurt the lawn with all the mixes of grass and all the slow released fertilizers..?? Can't wait to see what happens. Thank you for all your video's. They really do help people. p.s. I grow mums.. beautiful mums...do you need any?
