Well, the thing is that the units will NOT keep their experience, but lose some depending on how many fresh units join. It seems to me though like you lose less troops compared to when you just merge a depleted experienced unit with a unit with no experience.

M. Vipsanius Agrippa of your merge a larger unit of un experienced troops into a small Unit of surviving experienced veterans then the unit will become full of fresh rookies. I think the ration has to be 4:10 veteran to rookies to keep the high experience

Yea, it seems like the xp system here is somewhat related to the system in use by the romans of preserving experienced men for when you absolutely needed them which was achieved by sending in the most unexperienced men first. Basically like when a legion was levied, a senior legate would distribute the men into the 3 tiers based on skill level, experience and wealth. Hastati were typically the youngest, poorest, least experienced. Followed by Principes and then Triarii. During enemy contacts, Hastatii would generally be the first to contact the enemy (led by a veteran legate obviously), if they died, you haven't actually lost a huge investment to readiness; if they lived, they retained that experience. After some period of service and wealth accrument, Hastatii would be merged with Principes, and veteran principes would be moved up to triarii. This meant they weren't risking their most experienced, 15-year veterans in every single skirmish, but if things went bad, you had grizzled, battle-hardened vets to step in. I try to play the game a similar way. I recruit a bunch of troops and send in the most novice first. On small engagments against rebels and whatnot this is fairly easy to do. After the battle, i merge units. i then replace losses with fresh recruits. And then I repeat that. The next engagement, noobs in first, vets hold back/support. Survivors keep being merged in with the more experienced guys, and the dead get replaced with new levies. So even if the noobs rout, they'll usually have killed a good chunk of the enemy, which increases the odds of your more veteran troops being able to finish off the enemy unit while being less likely to die (increasing their unit's average experience level). Even in small battles where you don't use units, they still get xp just being in a fight. Over time, the more battles/reduced risk of death, the veterans get concentrated into quite strong units, so that when you get into larger battles, you'll have units that are quite experienced, and less likely to rout. I try to only use 'retrain' as an emergency 'omg i need men RFN'.

@@maxdecphoenix you’re a bit confused my friend they stopped using the hastati, princepes, and triarii in the Marian reforms it’s better to just have a consistently well trained and armed army so it’s more likely that if a legion had casualties they were resolved and the veterans were dispersed among the the inexperienced units along with more seasoned centurions

Retaining is pretty self explanatory. Upgrades troops according to temple and armory + perks and refills killed troops in units.

@anonyme4881
@anonyme4881 3 года назад
Re train DOES loose experience based on the number of new troop you need to train For exemple 1 triple golden hastatii will be retrained into 80 triple bronze hastatii (i dont know the exact number of experience lost) Its still super good to heal units and keep some experience, which is a super OP stats (and the most important one) that gives your units +1 in each stats and maybe better morals. (It could be the extra stats boost) Full Experienced Hastatii is better than new Urban cohort A minor losses will still keep you your xp

The bonus you can get from temples that supposed to upgrade morale doesn't work. Or it could be that the units in the settlement has a building with this bonus will affect it, but I don't think its working as intended because you can't retrain them to boost their stats like with armor bonuses.

One thing you missed is that to replenish numbers you need the correct building like hastati need militia barracks else you can’t retrain them

Merging units made simple - Late game when I have too many armies to bother with micro-managing them all, I only merge units of the same exp level. That way I don't risk loosing experienced troops, and in the long run it saves a lot of time (a.k.a. CTRL+L reloads :P)

So, if those upgraded archers lose men and are retrained in a city that doesnt have the artemis +3 ranged weapon buff, the new recruits get the upgrade ? Like it is not like exp where every unit has separate exp and the average is taken ?

the most broken feature in rome 1. retraining an army which had phyrrus victory and just in one turn make them full stack army again
@TheRingoism
@TheRingoism 4 года назад
You had to send them back to a settlement or at least keep them In one If It was a defensive battle. Where as In the newer games, they auto replenish If they're just In friendly territory rather than a settlement, that to me makes the newer games far too easy and removes any sense of logistics to your campaigns.
@TheRomanRuler
@TheRomanRuler 3 года назад
@@TheRingoism New system would be better if it would take longer and take into account where unit is recruited from (where appropriate, for example Cretan Archers from Crete but generic units from everywhere). So units recruited only in Crete would take really really long time to replenish in Britain, to a point where you are better of recruiting locals to replenish the ranks or send reinforcements. I like how new system removes constant and repetitive micromanagement, it just is way too forgiving in vanilla.
@maxdecphoenix
@maxdecphoenix 3 года назад
@@TheRingoism it's broken if you are attacked by a very large army near one of their settlements. I've seen this several times when attacked by very large A.I. armies and it's infuriating. You get attacked by a 1000~ man force. As the first troops begin routing, you can't run them down because the AI still has a shit-ton of units on the field which you have to focus on. Then you finally break his full army, but there are then way too many routing units to kill before they all exit the field. Essentially leaving 95~% of his units at 5-10%. He gets pushed to a nearby settlement, but before you can launch an assault (because you typically have to wait at least 1 turn), AI miracles up 800-men in a single turn from a single settlement and the AI is right back up to a 900+ men. If your guys rout, they literally rout. You lose them. If the AI routs, they keep them. If those routing units escape with even 1 man, the AI has the opportunity to completely restore those units to 100% before you can really do anything to exploit that victory.

@@TheRingoism i think Auto replenish makes sense as a mechanic if it was altered a bit. the unit you pay for the upkeep should charge that and let it replenish. the classic argument i see is 'why can i have a unit that's 60 years old and clearly been refilled with men as they retire etc, but not have the logistics system of marshalling recruits to replace and replenish units in the field.' i would prefer a system where the further u were from a building able to recruit the unit the auto replenish got WAY lower, so cheaper armies with elite units and such u still had to consider campaign fatigue but the realistic endless muster of new men is also there, just getting them to you took longer. maybe a feature where for a very large fee you could replenish them in 1 turn or boost the replenishment rate massively high, as if the general or nation has made a call to arms with cash incentives to the people. i would say i like the auto replenish as it deals with really annoying cases of say a 120 man unit...missing 15, you want a full strength army if its going to be in dangerous regions for a while without a chance to recoup but having to juggle that is annoying. the armies being locked to a general also make that a bit harder as being able to have a 'baggage train' of reinforcements who you swap into the main army whilst the cycled unit goes for some R+R to catch up later as in older titles etc.... sorry its a muddled mess but i'll just say i think auto replenishment as a mechanic makes complete sense to have, but the implementation could be altered to allow it to be much more integrated to the system as a realistic function of an army at war that is sustaining its forces. the more arcade style of you just replenish units at a rate is not ideal but i will say i prefer it over the hassle of managing cycling armies around ESPECIALLY when you cannot move units alone to let a general continue a campaign with units u are detaching and attaching to their main force. sorry for block and ramble..hard to say it without going into an essay on it ^^

I don't like auto-heal troops... It make more sense to recruit soldier to complete them, but I guess they didnt like the full heal after one turn. The biggest shame is the fact that an army HAS to have a generals leading them and training them. Even more with generals becoming totally ridiculous one man army in last total war, I dont see a problem at all with a no general army I guess it's moon people fault
