Last week, the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) released the detailed report on Household Consumer Expenditure Survey (2022-23). As per this data, the gap between the average urban and rural monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) has narrowed, however, consumption inequality persists. In this episode of #MacroSutra, Economist Radhika Pandey and ThePrint's Associate Editor Yuthika Bhargava discuss the key trends that the data shows.

To reduce inequality, we need to create alternative jobs to farm labour. For this farm reforms and labour reforms are urgently needed

Despite subscribing to ThePrint membership, my question was not taken. On the other hand, several non-members had their questions taken. I think this is not the right way to go forward.

I think my question was important enough as it had to do with the notification of the labour reform rules that would in turn create more formal sector jobs which would increase the falling consumption.

@SayHisNameAd Increase the falling consumption?
@SayHisNameAd
@SayHisNameAd 3 месяца назад
@@hogwarts_hp I mean, several datapoints have continuously shown that consumption is not increasing in our country and as a share of GDP, it is falling. That’s what I meant.

It’s silly to be talking about inequality. Every society that has high GDP growth, has experienced rising inequality as it is due to fundamental human nature. Some people adopt new technologies lot faster than others. The measure of inequality are poor at best and it quickly becomes political leading to poor policy measures.

People confuse between inequality and poverty. Reducing poverty is more important than inequality

Too many words, not enough visuals. Please take the time to produce the graphics. Imagine reading an economics text without graphs and visuals.

Andhra should be easily the best and richest state in India as the state ha so many entrepreneurs. And also good work ethic and street smart professionals. Ni wonder Hyderabad is one of the top performing cities in country.. but got snatched away from Andhra due to politics. Will be interesting to see if they build another city

I‘m convinced that India will not achieve full prosperity until it re-engineer away its CASTE structure.
@kartik5001
@kartik5001 3 месяца назад
how can you reengineer it? for the last 75 years the constitution and the state machinery have tried and failed. top down movements don't succeed here. the only way forward is industrialization and urbanization

Caste structure is already gone. It was dismantled long ago. What is needed in India is, economic freedom. People of all castes got political freedom, in 1947, already. In 1991, industry and service sector was partially liberalized. But agriculture and manufacturing are still beholden to socialist laws that need to go away. Caste is not the problem. Socialist hangover is.

depending on household consumption survey to estimate real consumption accurately, is same as like depending on exit polls to know the exact number of seats that poltical parties are getting. we can just know the trend, but can't useful to know the exact consumption.

Real Rural Wage Growth not GDP should be the measure of growth in an agrarian Nation.
@rajx7120
@rajx7120 3 месяца назад
Biw are you assuming that rural wage = agrarian income? Share of farming in labour force needs to come down.
