This video's assertion is not correct. The Z & V symbols and the White & Red armbands respectively where the force identification markers used during the exercise. Just like NATO uses Blue (friendly) and Red (enemy). The Russians training exercise used Z, short for Zapad (West) and V short for Vostok (East) during the exercise. Z for victory is a retronym to hide the original Z-Force (west) which embarrassingly gained early prominence in the media.

They have several different markings that identify which army the vehicle belongs to: e.g. Marines, regular infantry, special forces, chechens… explain why some vehicles have a ‘V’ or ‘O’ on them. The evidence that it’s become a more wider symbol in Russia is cursory at this point.

Actually it was a rough and ready painted version of symbols used to identify Russian units from different Military areas and different branches of the military. Z is a military marking for units from the Eastern military district Z in a box - units from Crimea O - units from Belarus V - Marines X - from Chechnya A - Special Forces. Alot of the initial forces were from the Eastern district so this is why it was so prominent. I'm guessing the propaganda value of the Z symbol was just quickly picked up on by the Russians , as Russians are masters at Propaganda!!
