And we're off to the races! The Iliad begins in earnest this week with the outbreak of the feud between Achilles and Agammemnon (#TeamAchilles). The drama that unfolds contains almost the entirety of all that was to come in Greek culture, from the terror of hubris to the magnificent achievement of city-states in coalition. Plus: stick around to the end for a bunch of very cool announcements.

Spencer! I don't know if you read comments, but if you do, I have something for your science/magic series! Montezuma, last king of the Aztecs, upon hearing of Cortez arriving in the Yucatan, said to his priests and diviners: "It is your position, then, to be deceivers, tricksters, to pretend to be men of science and forcast that which will take place in the future, deceiving everyone by saying that you know what will happen in the world, that you see what is within the hills, in the center of the earth ... But everything is a lie, it is all pretense."

This idea of Apollo being the god of mice makes sense with Heroditus' description of when the Angel of God killed the Babylonian army outside of Jerusalem. Mice chewing bowstrings might be closer to the Biblical description than I thought.

I feel like every great work has an absolutely boring/bemusing section that first time readers can hardly stomach. I've nicknamed it the "Tom Bombadil."
