Yes. Bitterballen are the same as a kroket. It is basically a smaller bite sized version to share with friends during a 'borrel' (Evening drink with snacks) Almost every Pub sells them as a beer snack.

At a dutch childrens party you can only choose the Frikandel, Kroket and Kaassouffle. As a child I would always choose the kaassoufle because I love cheese :P

the Kroket and the Bitterballs, you can eat with mustered or mayo. the fricandel with mayo, curry sauce and chopped onions. The herring is fermented, and pickled, and is not "raw".

Next time try kroket with peanut sauce (satay sauce). Its so good.

Herring in that form is fermented, not raw. Good herring is difficult, also because the oceans are spoilt by human industrial activity. But from a supermarket is an absolute no no to the ones who genuinely know Dutch herring. And more over, no pickles, no onion, good herring is eaten like that. If they serve it with extras it is not a good sign, extra onions is an in Amsterdam originating sales trick to get rid of your bad herring. Also the way you eat that fries is not how you suppose to do it, cold fries are horrible. You have to eat them just after the moment it doesn’t burn you no more.
