Joe Biden Ends His First Presidential Campaign (1988) 

On 12 January 1988, 45-year-old Senator Joe Biden of Delaware spoke to ITN's Peter Sissons about his reasons for dropping out of the 1988 presidential race. It was thought that allegations of plagiarism in Biden's campaign speeches were the primary factor. Clips showing Biden copying almost verbatim figures such as John F Kennedy, Lyndon B Johnson and even UK Labour leader Neil Kinnock seemed to harm the candidate's credibility - though young(er) Biden told Peter Sissons his words had been taken out of context. In Biden's view, the planting of plagiarism allegations was an effort to distract from his efforts as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee to prevent the nomination of controversial judge Robert Bork to the US Supreme Court. Either way, the future president insisted he wasn't bitter about his first presidential campaign having been brought down in failure: "There's no sour grapes about this. No one ever said it was easy to get to become the leader of the free world."
