I hope this helps some people understand a bit more when we're talking about all those numbers! Please leave any additional questions below and I'll try my best to get back to as many as I can. Also, I'm so appreciative of you all even watching these videos, and that is more support than I could have ever imagined. However, if you happen to like a design and you want to rep the channel, you can check them out here!! teespring.com/stores/charlescornell
“Not a single person asked for it, but were gonna do it anyway” in my opinion, this channel is the type of thing we didn’t know we needed but once we have it something we do.
It's the Beginner's Mindset. Always something to learn, even in going into the ABCs again. As an artist I keep going back to the fundamentals, and there's deep wisdom hidden everywhere.
PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE As a teen who's been playing classical for 10 years, I learned the theory but not how to apply it. I'm trying to make the switch to jazz (it just seems so much more fun), and, during quarantine, videos online have been my only source of guidance. Thank you so much!
If you've been playing for 10 years then I assume you have at least moderate reading and technical skills. So now what I encourage you to do to help you improve with jazz (mainly improv) is to transcribe pieces that you like (listen, learn how to play, then write them down) and transcribe the chords as well. Once you do that, you can find all the II-V-Is and take the licks from those parts and incorporate those into your own improv.... Wow, that was a lot... Good luck!
As a learning jazz pianist I’m so grateful for this channel for not only clarifying these concepts but doing it in such a fun and clear way. Please keep this channel going because it’s amazing.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a creator go “hey if you can’t afford the merch, it’s ok don’t stretch yourself, your views are more than enough support” It is a sort of wholesomeness that my broke ass needed It just makes me want to buy merch from you more, I’m coming for your merch store after I get this job
You should definitely look into some more channels that explain music like this. Learning the theory behind the music is like when Penn and Teller show the technique behind the magic trick. It's awesome and really helps you appreciate the craft.
I’ve been playing for over 8 years - unfortunately self-taught. And I have never understood this concept until this video came out. Honestly Chris, thank you. I struggle with a learning disability, and having so many piano teachers fail me dissuaded me from fully falling in love with piano. But in a little over fifteen minute, you’ve managed to spark that musical ember. Thank you dude.
Sir, as a teacher as well (not a music teacher though) I have to say that what you did there was just brilliant. I have never before seen such concepts being explained in such a clear and smooth way as you did. Charles we have no doubt you are a great musician, but I am sure to say you are a incredible teacher as well. Last but not least, I cannot afford much for now but congrats on your merch, I will definitely keep an eye on it and get myself a piece as soon as things smooth up a bit in here. Have a great one, mate (:
though I think it doesn't work if the V itself feels unnatural but that's okay because you can just play dominant chords cycling around the circle of fifths until you get where you wanna go lmao... yeah the mind has been blown o.o
I kept waiting for a rogue V/V-V-I variation to crop up in the video somewhere. He covered the ii-V-I so thoroughly, I mentally expected it to be a given. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Still enjoyed the video though, of course.
I still relatively new to music, and this is probably the best example of teaching chord voicing. It seems to be something that a lot of teachers take for granted, where they just go all over the piano, and I'm just like "whoa, there!". I have a hard time imagining chords as anything other than triads within one octave. I never know when to spread it out, and where to place voicings
Thanks so much!! This is EXACTLY what we were thinking during the design process. I wanted something that was generic enough to not be specific to me, but that some people might think just looks cool and represents something cool.
Charles Cornell I know you probably won’t see this but if you do, thanks so much for doing what you do, you’re one of my favorite content creators and inspired me to start learning piano. Keep up the amazing content
I really want to take a second to just appreciate how Charles discusses monetization elements of his channel. Telling us not to stretch ourselves too thin, and that watching the videos alone is support enough, and even the way he introduces and thanks sponsors. Not just annoying statements like COP THE NEW MERCH and OUR SPONSOR FOR TODAY IS... You are one of the most mature RU-vidrs when it comes to these things and you really make it feel like you are humbled by your massive growth over the past year and it is just so very refreshing. Thanks, Charles!
I appreciate this more than you know. I makes me feel icky when I see RU-vidrs blasting their merch and yelling at you to buy. I want to give people something to support via, but I don't want to make anybody feel like I don't still appreciate them if they can't or don't want to.
Charles Cornell Well it is of my opinion that you are doing a fantastic job at it. It has been amazing to see you transform and evolve in such a short time and it is all because of how you conduct yourself on camera for us!! For real you’re one of the best out there. PS. Totally copping the merch, tho. Lololol.
@@CharlesCornellStudios Charles, keep doing what you are doing! In addition to being super smart/talented/fucking hilarious/a great teacher (you really are invitingly concise and simple without loss of accuracy with your theoretical explanations), I really do think you have the best attitude, the most integrity, and the most genuine humility of any RU-vidr I've ever seen (and I watch a shit ton of RU-vid)! You inspire me to be a kinder and more joyful person with every enthusiastic video you make (serious or facetious). Wholesome and infectiously exuberant entertainment like this that makes us smile, laugh, fascinated, and learn is more than just entertainment; it relieves any stress of the day and makes pent up frustration melt away - why should I frown if I can be like Charles and smile all the time? Thanks for being you!
I feel like the only exception to me being annoyed by RU-vidrs plugging their own merch, is when Joel from Roomieofficial does it with his 'a little bit pitchy shirt' because usually he said it by accident, and it's kind of funny. But yes, other than that, they annoy me
I knew that 2-5-1 was a very popular progression, but I did NOT know you could use it to move between different scales! Honestly music makes a lot more sense now! I can't believe it took me so long to learn this... Thank you!
I'm really happy you're doing music theory for people. One thing that might help is a keyboard cam? like a cam from above. As a pianist I keep having to mentally flip it aha
Agree! Some way that mirrors the keys so we see it correctly would make so much of a difference. Now I'm all "hmm... He says C, but I'm pretty sure that's an E... Wait a minute. To the left of two blacks is to the right of two blacks from his perspective". Music is like my third language, but as with my two other languages, I'm not able to read mirrored.
This is incredibly useful, and fairly easy to understand. For some who likes the complexity of music, but doesn’t understand it this is a great step towards understanding. I really hope you can do more of these.
Yo I'm in the same boat! There are some things I understand but there's a lot that I don't, but I still love to listen to music like Dream Theater and Rush.
I love how slowly he explained everything and built up , because i watch , i mean i try , to watch adam neely's videos and thats just concepts flying over my head . Thank you for making this video and hope you make more of these ♥️🙌🏻
I absolutely love Adam's videos. He does an INCREDIBLE amount of research and presents extremely difficult topics in a great way. But yes, if I didn't have the education I'm fortunate enough to have, I would likely struggle to follow along, so I totally understand. Thanks for the support!!
I took an introduction to improvisation class at a local college. The class had no prerequisite, so there were music majors, a guy with zero music background, the whole range. The prof made us play ii-V-I’s all the way around the circle of fifths (counterclockwise in the fourths direction) on the piano no matter what your instrument was. That’s how important it was to him that we grasp this.
Love this. I already know this stuff, but it's still entertaining to watch you teach it! It'd be awesome if you made more videos like this but went deeper. I'd to love to know more about jazz theory.
First time watching any of your videos. The fact there was nothing to learn for me in the video allowed me to focus more on how you're explaining things. And I think the quality of your explanation is astonishing!
I went into this thinking “oh crap, I’m not gonna understand any of this” but, I was proven very wrong. This video really helped in explaining and simplifying all of this “music lingo” if you will. So thank you dude!
I'm a jazz trombonist who just nodded along when my teacher told me about Autumn Leaves and how it's just 2-5-1s, and now I actually know what he's talking about. Time to blow his mind with a solo :)
Charles. Thank you for using your talent and incredible skill to show and educate us so much man. What a blessing it is to see your vids. Cheers from Costa Rica!!
Ive been watching youtube for years, and ive never cared about youtuber mech... until now why is that design so cool. the white with the black keys is so so so clean
I've only ever been able to make the notes sound pretty together, but never learned why, or how to play. The math of music is so pleasing to hear it's hard to explain. Like unlocking something in the brain... Thank you for explaining this topic so well.
Man where you made those 4 keys work with each other... that might have been the most eye-opening use of the ii-V-I I've ever had someone so patiently explain to me. Thank you very much for this video!!!
I already knew the content content but the way he explain things maked everything come alive, even if i know where he's going with the explanation. This is soooo easy to watch.
This video just cleared up so much for me. I knew about the ii-V-I progression in more of a theoretical and basic level, but this just made it click for me in terms of practicality. Cant wait to start utilizing this in my practicing.
I learned it about five times in university, used it in two scores and couldn't remember it one year after graduating, so thanks for helping me remember that
I've played piano for a decade entirely by ear without a single lesson, so the mental block on theory is insane, and your channel has been more instrumental (hehe) in pushing my understanding forward and combining instinct and muscle memory with real mechanics, very excitedly binging these and pausing and trying things on the piano and learning so so fast. These videos clearly come from a passion to teach and share and they're doing just that for me.
DUUUUUDDDEE I've been struggling to gain an intuitive understanding of the ii V I for YEARS and you made it SO EASY.The phrases "leading tone" and "common tone" swam to me from long-forgotten band memories and you BLEW MY MIND when you did whole "v in front of every new key" trick. I have a whole new understanding of the keyboard now. THANK YOU SO MUCH, you are AWESOME and I'm BUYING A SHIRT. I would love to see further videos, perhaps deconstructing how keys can change within a song? BLESS YOU HAVE A NICE DAY
I discovered your channel recently and then stumbled on this video and, this has helped a lot! I'm currently trying to learn the piano after many years of wishing I would and your explaining of the 2-5-1 suddenly made so many things make more sense.
I felt like you showed me how to actually play this instrument, the piano. I've wondered just what exactly this "2-5-1" progression was, thanks so much for the breakdown! :D
Thank you so much for this. I’m a classically trained tuba player, and my college schedule didn’t allow for jazz theory electives (technique and educator courses took those spots). This certainly put things in the right perspective for many different levels. Awesome! I find that jazz guys really love tritones, and my limited extended harmony understanding has me scratching my head as to why this works and it’s functionality.
I was literally thinking this is way too much for me as I am not earning as of now and then he dropped those amazing words " Don't stretch your budget, just watching is support enough". I'll watch every single video my dude 😁💕
Oh my goddd please make more of these! I've been composing on a DAW by ear for several years now, but I just write based on "what sounds right" and it can be SO FRUSTRATING when I have a sound in my head but can't make it come out on paper without struggling hardcore because I just don't have the strong music theory background. This video was so helpful, thank you!!
Steve, you nailed an important point. Me: Adam Neely in 2020. This channel in early 2021. 12tone last week. My RU-vid meanderings got me there, but my route was different.
I really love these theory videos cause, even though I’ve been playing an instrument for several years, I’ve never had real theory lessons so my knowledge is super spotty and weird. More functional knowledge than theoretical
We need more videos like these explaining what chords work for each other. Getting into composition but its difficult to distinguish what chord follows the next. Thanks Charles
I have seen one his latest videos and to see where he came from and Just improving everyday its really inspiring and seem like such a down to earth dude yo god bless you my dude
This takes me right back to music college and re-harmonising Bach Chorales for hours and hours. The perfect cadence! IIb - Ic - V - I !!! It's still imprinted on my brain.
I am from Brazil and I would very much like to be able to buy the t - shirts, but in the current circumstances it is difficult, I was already studying the progress ll - V - l but I had no idea of the possible variations and only this sample of them already brings me a lot of material to study. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I am very grateful for that!
I was supposed to go to a jazz camp and learn about theory but because of COVID-19, I need to watch videos and learn. Thank you for making this. It really helps me out.
