I'm speechless at the fact that we didn't know this was the first black woman, not Oprah, but Hazel, to have her own show? Back then? She was before her time. Thank you for posting.

@Von Want to really talk about being educated?? You and your family have done shit in music, period. My grandfather invented JAZZ, ran with his posse, that included his best friend, Scott Joplin. So European shut the fuck on a matter you! have no background in, to talk about the subject? Now let the grown up's talk....en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilbur_Sweatman

You can thank the GOP,Joe McCarthy and the FBI under Hoover for that.During WW2,Scott did a concert where some Soviet troops were in the front row.In the early '50s,McCarthy got wind of it and called her on the carpet. He conveniently forgot the Soviets were our ally against Hitler during WW2.Scott was married to Adam Clayton Powell then.Powell was like Al Sharpton then.

Like my grandfather, they remember his partner who died on stage in my grandfather's arms. There were and always the best of brothers from another mother if there ever was. But it was my grandfather who taught and lit that fire of ragtime in his buddy's music? No one remembers that or Grandpa either?

They tend to do that to us, when we decide that they don't own us. When we stand up for our dignity it's something they can not digest. Some Black People have to understand that we don't have to live by their perception of us, we are a dynamic Race and they know it as well as we do. Dignity, Class, Style, Grace, Self Worth, and Standing Up for yourself and others to be treated right, breaks barriers.

I never heard of her either. Hmm, interesting how black people never felt the need to mention her or her contributions to black people. Is it because she is from Trinidad and as such she wasn't worth mentioning. Is it because she believed in turning a lemon into lemonade without whining about how racism was keeping her down. She was beautiful, articulate, brilliant; she stood up for those who didn't have a voice. Unfortunately, she found out what happens when you question people who control your career. Fortunately she didn't believe in wallowing in self pity.

And in the olden days they used to say "mulatto" (half black), and in some places they went as far as calling people "quadroon" (quarter black) and "octoroon" (one eighth black). But the racist one-drop rule came about which said that even if you had only one drop of black blood, you were to be classified as black. That's why there were and are so many obviously mixed race (and even basically white) people who called themselves black and were called black.

To mitchell, east coast, tousignant: You don't seem to understand the video you just saw. Her American career was trashed because she went up against HUAC at the height of the red scare and told them off. White men who did the same had their careers trashed and SOME WENT TO JAIL. Before that her career was prospering in 'racist America'. When she went to Europe she had a successful life, and when she returned to America the public's tastes had changed and Jimi Hendrix was king of the rock guitar. All in all, she seems to have had a good life and we can all envy her. Talent and training did it. Do you guys have any talent or training, and is the world unjustly denying you your deserved place?
