(I apologize for this being long-winded or verbose) I’m not a parent, and I probably won’t be one for at least a decade and some change, but here’s something I’ve often wondered: Would it be worthwhile to allow my theoretical children to play a game which is cool and fun on the surface (IE, in its gameplay), but has a story with deep themes which could come to be a formative experience for them, when they’re at a younger age, say maybe around 6 or 7, so they can still enjoy *part of the experience* even if the plot may confuse them on some levels, so as to foster a chance of them returning to said game *at a later age* and then *gaining a newfound appreciation of said game, due to being better able to understand the themes as they’ve grown up? Or, should I just maybe not concern myself too much with that? I hope this question makes sense. Examples of games I have in mind for these types of scenarios are the Metal Gear Solid games (probably not MGS3 and MGS4 at a younger age like 6 or 7)Xenogears/Xenoblade, ICO/Shadow Of The Colossus, Silent Hill 2, etc.

I understand your question and I think these things happen organically. However, as a parent you do have a hand in the experiences that your child has and when they have them. So be a guiding hand in your child’s experiences but let them discover things at their own pace.

Online gaming can be a lot to work through. It’s a topic I’m planning to talk more about in future videos.
