Dude it shocks me how bad people can be at analyzing a story. We the fans know that this idea of monster trio is huge to the story, yet people think that the 3rd person in the monster trio is going to be introduced at basically the end of OP. That leaves basically zero room for that 3rd fighter to develop in comparison to the trio that was introduced in the prologue of OP and has had literal decades of character development…

The one piece community sometimes has some frustratingly bad takes when it comes to the story. It amazes me that some people think yamato will replace the monster trio. Even if yamato joins, luffy zoro and sanji have always been the monster trio. If someone stronger joins that's not going to change.
Robin's comment about the wings of the Pirate King are spot on. Sanji's dream of finding the All Blue is a dream of discovery while Zoro's dream of being the greatest swordsman is one of conflict. To be Pirate King Luffy needs both. When Sanji looks bad its almost always because his priority at that time isn't combat. He is always thinking about what is coming around the next corner. It is just an extension of the dynamic that comes into play when Zoro and Sanji argue about who caught the bigger dinosaur on Little Garden. The answer is that it doesn't matter. Luffy already ate both, Sanji is still cooking, and Zoro is taking a nap.

The fact that Sanji usually gets his biggest moments during the huge arcs where everyone fights-- also informs his character. He is very kind, very caring and very willing to protect his weaker crewmates, so he always steps up when they need him most.
@@troyyort954 I think it was like a seppuku thing of honor that Sanji told him to do in his anger towards a man who tormented a woman. At the time Jinbei wasn't apart of the crew and it was in the heat of the moment with Nami and stuff.
Just remember that when Ohara interviewed a famous japanese youtuber about power-scaling, we found that Japan doesn't give two shits about the monster-trio power-scale.
Also important to note that Sanji's role in the crew is quite different from Zoro's or Luffy's. Zoro is the main frontline muscle and Luffy is the closer, so they're basically always going to be doing some amount of fighting. Sanji, though, consistently plays much more of an ace-in-the-hole or independent operative kind of role. The first means that he is necessarily less active than the other two in earlier parts of the arc's conflict (so that he can have his big charge of the winged hussars moment later), and the second means that he's more likely than Zoro to get caught out on his own or otherwise isolated from the main conflict. As I think I've said before, Little Garden, the casino segment of Alabasta, Skypeia, and the whole Water 7 / seatrain sequence are all great examples of Sanji doing his thing in a very prototypical way, with all of the big moments he can get that way and the potential pitfalls for him as a crew asset. Arlong Park has a similar structure for him, but it's not as obvious both because it's an early arc and because Zoro isn't quite able to fill his own typical role.
Yup. Zoro and Luffy are the brawlers and Sanji is the brains. To me this is why zoro is closer to luffy than sanji. Zoro is basically another Luffy busted ass combat ability but dumb as a pile bricks. While sanji has insane combat ability it's not to the same degree but he makes up with that with smarts and overall utility for the crew. Meaning to me in 1v1 Sanji just will never compare to zoro and luffy but in terms of the overall impact to the crew's victory sanji is just as valuable as either of them.

For how much people love the monster trio, it seems like everyone constantly wants to break it down. Luffy/Zoro/Sanji has been a thing since the very beginning and that's never gonna change. Not only are they the strongest, but they're also the voice of reason Luffy needs.

I think the 'Monster Trio' Is exactly as Morj described...it doesn't have to be a static power scale because none of the trio fill the same roles. If you watch how Sanji typically goes through an arc, he's used as a way for Oda to scale certain enemies. Rarely does Sanji ever go out looking for a fight, unlike Luffy or Zorro but when he does encounter an enemy, he's not looking to win the fight, instead he's either stalling or fulfilling an objective. I think there can be a parallel that can be drawn from this entire Wano arc in that Luffy being the 'Emperor (emperor of the sea)', Zorro and Sanji fill the rolls of 'Shoguns' as battlefield commanders of attacking (Zorro) and defense (Sanji).

Now, people expect Yamato to join the crew and if she does, ppl again will try to put her up there with Luffy and Zoro. No, Sanji will still remain as the number 3 in the crew and will always be number 3, it's in his name after all.
Sanji's the one that carries the crew when the captain's going wild, that's why he constantly gets all the damage. Almost all the times he got the "short end of the stick" it's because Sanji tried to protect someone last minute, hell, even the same almost happened in the "nothing happened" Zoro moment. Sanji's the brain/shield, Zoro's the muscle/sword and Luffy is the leader/captain.

I think that people really forget in this whole debate is that if oda consistently portrays luffy and zoro as being equal and sanji and zoro being equal then that means that there isn't that big of a gap between luffy and sanji because if there was then the dynamics wouldn't make much sense.
I like the point you made about Sanji being laid back and more of a "human" character than the other two in the trio. It makes it that much cooler that Sanji is part of the trio. It's not really his goals, but his principles that makes him the strong fighter he is. Sanji is almost always exclusively fighting to protect someone or something, not necessarily push himself beyond his limits like Zoro and Luffy. And yet, he's still a Monster.

I always had a special place in my heart for Sanji, because growing up with One Piece I was an aspiring chef (now I am one 🙃.) It just always felt super cool to me that even though it obviously wasn’t his entire personality to be a fighter, he could still hold his own and at sometimes even rival the 2 main fighters in the crew. I hated sanji when i was a kid and a big zoro fanboy i was mad coz why is this guy get to be strong as zoro but then now sanji is my 2nd fave character next to luffy.
I think what people miss with Sanji post-timeskip is that Law stole most of his spotlight. Sanji is the Straw Hat's scheming fighter. Law swallowed up all his shine in both strategy and fighting. Sanji struggled vs Vergo? Law one-shot him. Zoro took out Pica, Law took out Trebol (usually would be Sanji). Law did the entire Dressrosa plan and Sanji was sidelined. Etc. I think Oda struggled giving both characters their shine during the Dressrosa saga. That's what caused Sanji's portrayal to struggle for so long.
That's an interesting point of view. And kinda funny too, because I always thought Law and Zoro's roles were more similar to each other (at least in how they interact with Luffy).
Sanji has been slightly miswritten because he wasn’t there in Dressrosa for half the time, therefore missed out on all the opportunities which Law took. Then in Whole Cake he did nothing but bake a cake, which is poor because I at least expected a tough fight for his freedom but oh well it’s still Sanji>Zoro for me 🤟🏽.
So at that time, Law was 2nd in popularity poll even suppressed Zoro. Oda sensei bring shine to Law because of the story need. However, I have no doubt Monster Trio still his favorite dynamic!

My "In-Universe" explanation is that Zoro is always playing catch-up with Luffy, and Sanji with Zoro. So when Zoro seems like Luffy's equal, he is pretty much, and when Sanji seems like Zoro's equal, he is pretty much, but neither always is as they are both simply trying to keep up with their captain's mad pace through the world and through getting stronger. Thus, when Luffy is about to make a "big break foward", Zoro can generally catch up, and thereafter needs to catch up again, and Sanji is often hot on Zoro's tail, so when said "big break" happened recently, they both at the very least *seem* equal due to Luffy's greater power.
I personally think it's the opposite I think essentially what is happening is that Luffy is on an unstoppable swell forward, and Zoro and Sanji keep the pace for the most part. They're both perfectly content with Luffy being the strongest on the crew, and it's only in times when the crew is in danger and they're forced into acting that it starts to look like they're catching up. Neither Zoro nor Sanji's goals require that they be the strongest people on the planet. Zoro only needs to be able to beat Mihawk, and Sanji only needs to be strong enough to discover the All Blue. Outside of that, they need to be strong enough to assist Luffy along his path. Ultimately it is Luffy's direct responsibility - as the man who wants to be the freest person in the world, and as the captain - to be practically undefeatable, so that he can maintain that freedom for himself and his friends. Zoro and Sanji understand that, and willingly fall in line with Luffy's goals and his position as the strongest.
@@PrometheusXV I think you partially missed what I meant, but I might just not have been clear. It is not in any way to compete with Luffy that Zoro and Sanji might feel the need to keep up with him, but to be able to help him reach his goals, to stay useful to him as "his wings", as Robin would put it. I do think that part of how Sanji is keeping up however, considering he isn't really as battle-driven as Luffy or Zoro, is due to his rivalry with Zoro, thus the Luffy > Zoro > Sanji relationship with each trying to catch up to the previous one. Also, when it comes to their power-goals, I think it would be fair to say Zoro's requires to be at a strength similar or higher than that of the current Yonkos, and that Sanji's drive not to get outpaced by Zoro will at least drive him that far too.

The main problem for Sanji was the matchups after time skip. Oda put him against Vergo(who fought Smoker and Law at the same time) and Doffy like wtf (and even so Sanji stood his ground prettty well)

Also, Queen was hitting himself with his own lasers (which freed Sanji) and refused to use all of his techniques until Sanji brought out the raid suit, which gave Sanji more time and free hits. And if that wasn't bad enough, Queen then turned his back on Sanji to mess with some random woman and that gave Sanji his final opening. Current Sanji would still win against a competent Queen but it wouldn't be easily if Queen doesn't mess around.
The reason Oda has waited until Wano before Jimbei joined the crew properly is because Wano is the first time in the story Jimbei can join without disrupting the established monster trio, which has had a faster power growth rate than Jimbei.
Actually now Jinbe is almost too far behind lol. Zoro with his advanced techniques, sword and Coc then Sanji with his invisible speed, exoskeleton that can tank hits from Yonko commanders without taking damage, and new leg style are so far ahead of Jinbe its kinda crazy lol. Jinbe being around Tobi Roppo level wheras Zoro beat King high diff and Sanji beat Queen low diff, Queen couldn't even perceive of Sanji nor damage him lmfao. The monster trio will never change now because they are so far ahead it's ridiculous
Something I think people don't realize is that Sanji isn't a meat head who's trying to be 'the king' of his contemporaries or the best in his craft (he's already a world class chef, lol). Sanji is more of a 'normal guy' who just so happens to be the third strongest of the crew, so him getting his ass beat regularly doesn't somehow invalidate that, lol I mean c'mon
But it does though, it creates massive inconsistencys power-scaling wise, because then you have major inconsistencies, for example in one piece time it was about 1 month since sanji was “struggling” vs vergo, who is much much much weaker the doflamingo, but now we see him taking queen, and he doesnt seem to be having too much of hard time, and queen could be argued to be atronger then doffy, im not even gonna get into the fact that sanji was holding both queen and king together, even it wasnt for much the simple fact that both of them together still wasnt enough tire him out, when a suppressed doflamingo was literaly seconds away from killing sanji makes no sense, and i can even go one step further, sanji in raid suit could not deal any significant damage to page one, but yet here he about 1 week later, forcing queen to use hybrid form, so yes it invalidates sanji progress it just making it seem like sanji was either A) holding back for the entire post-timeskip, or b) he somehow got stupid strong with literally no training.
@@deadshot6554 yeah i agree with you but its about the amount of fights, its about the lack of progress shown as to how sanji went from semi-comparable to vergo, who was much much weaker then doffy, to being arguably stronger then him in about a month and a half maybe two months, with no training or anything at least if we saw his progress it would make sense, or if he breezed trhough post-timeskip like zoro did we could understand, because it makes no sense. Even if you dont count the fight he actually lost, all of his other fight POST-timeskip he didnt look like he was gonna win, the only, one you could argue he would have won is probably page one. So the point isnt about him not getting enough fights but that oda should have shown how he got from weaker then vergo to potentially stronger then queen, with no training, no raid suit, no haki bloom, and no pushing himself past his limit.

Coming back to Doriki system, I love how Sanji's opponent was just barely weaker than Zoro's. That way Oda managed to not only keep rivalry going, established that they're both pretty similar in power and made sure that the one from Monster Trio that usually get's Ls is fighting weaker opponent. That way Oda Can use strong character to depict formitable opponents without jeopardising one character that mostly works off of spectacle. Because to be honest you can summarize whole One Piece in Monster trio: Zoro being the amazing spectacle, Sanji being the depth of the characters and Luffy.... Being Luffy. The wackyness, the dreamyness and the heart. All of them have those qualities (I'm not implying that Luffy or Zoro lack depth), but each of those is mostly focusing on one of those more than other two. Zoro is amazing character, but he's pretty limited, as he's the only strawhat that cannot outright loose a fight, so he's mostly used to be powerful badass. Luffy is the main character, and although he is shaping whole story with his will alone, he too have to defeat his opponent eventually. Luffy also can't just give up. He's depicted as someone with indominable will, after all. Out of the three only Sanji gives Oda so much room to put him in different situations. Only he can run away to protect his crew if he thinks there is no other way, only he can lose and stay down, only he can look for creative solution that doesn't involve persuading enemy to commit unliving. Of course that has it's drawbacks, since Sanji is the only character that can have long lasting failures, after couple of arcs(Especially if each lasts over a year) it can make fans of the character rather dissapointed. Especially since Oda is much more creative in New World than in Paradise. I just hope that he will eventually give Sanji his moment that is just as creative as his setbacks.

I always imagine it like a graph, and the players Luffy, Zoro and Sanji have variance to their "power". If Luffy is a 100 at average, his tops is 120 and 80 his minimum. Zoro's average is like 85, his top is 100 and his minimum 60 and lastly Sanji, his average is like 70, his top is 85 and his minimum 55. Don't take the numbers seriously, I just wanted to point out that Zoro and Sanji can be equals while Zoro and Luffy can also be equals, depending on the context. If Oda wants to portray it one way, there is a way todo it and if he wants to do it the other way round, also fine,since there are no set in stone power levels like people love to assume. I think it is very clearly pointed out that if you compare the best potential those 3 have, you get a clear hierarchy with Luffy>Zoro>Sanji, however that doesnt mean that one of the lower characters cannot outshine or equal the ones above in certain fights, moments, scenes etc.

Huh. Just like the bounty discussion, if you think about it. This trio dynamic is only partially about power levels and overall strength. It's mostly because they are a storytelling trio. They are characters serving the themes of a story before they are fighters with any objective measure of their strength. Strong new crew members do not change this storytelling dynamic because it is the dynamic which determines power level, not the opposite way around. Just as bounties follow from storytelling and not some useless in-universe measuring stick, this power level dynamic exists as a character thing and power levels scale up as needed to follow the storytelling demands.
Spicy take: People don't understand this because they aren't used to a mangaka knowing what he's doing from day one like Oda has known. (Maybe an exception for Attack on Titan, which gets its own share of hate on first reads.)

Yeah some extreme fans in fandom got really vocal and they think their annoying opinion represents the truth or majority. But most of the readers might not want to argue or bickering just want to enjoy what the character or story or emotion it delivers! The popularity vote says something other than the extremists are saying! So, agree with you, Morj is doing God’s work!
The thing is after a while we will not remember those few small losses for Sanji but the emotional moments and him defeating the actual "Strong" guys from a major arc.
@@blyzer7373 he may have only lost one legit fight, but came up on the losing end consistently post time skip. He almost broke his leg against Vergo and wasn't even comparable to doffy. It took him getting the raid suit to even be in contention with the top teirs in the verse. Without the raid suit he couldn't defeat a commander. But if you replaced Zoro's blades with weaker ones, he would still be a better choice than raid suitless sanji
Sanji has always been one of my favorite SH’s. Cool thing about Sanji is that he always does something unexpected. He’s a bit of a underdog but it makes it that much more exciting when he comes in clutch. WCI was a really good arc for him.
Sanji jobbing to strong opponents is actually really in line with his character. He's kinda like Genos in OPM. He'll put himself out there to protect anyone no matter how much stronger they are than him. But at the same time, he's still incredibly strong in his own right.
Zoro is meant to be offense and aggression. Sanji is meant to be defense and kindness. Luffy is meant to be all of that. It means during a fight, Zoro's goal is to defeat his opponent, where as Sanji's goal is to make sure everyone is safe, and that means Sanji is going to lose some fights. Back when Luffy fought Mikawk, he said the most dangerous thing about Luffy was his ability to win people over. That's pretty much all Sanji ever does.

@@KonohazFinest Most likely Zoro vs King and Sanji vs Queen won't be as dragged out as you think. Most of the time Zoro has a slightly harder time with his opponent than Sanji but still has an easier time than Luffy. Then Sanji has a mid diff with his opponent. Morj brought it up in a previous video. A great example of this dynamic is Zoro and Sanji vs Kaku and Jabra when you compare it to Luffy vs Lucci. Lucci was twice as strong as Jabra and Kaku but Sanji and Zoro had way easier wins than Luffy. Zoro and Sanji struggled at first then broke out their new moves and won immediately. They were still able to run around easily. Sanji still went on to open the Gates of Justice. They still fought marines. Luffy finished Lucci and couldn't move afterward. We know Lucci was much stronger than the opponents Zoro and Sanji faced but have no idea how much stronger Lucci was than Zoro and Sanji. Another great example of the ambiguity of the gap between Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji is Wano. Zoro performed very well on the rooftop when he was fighting the Yonko alongside the other supernova. Everyone thought that Zoro was undoubtedly above first commanders but now his opponent is a first commander. Everyone thought Sanji was weak because of Whole Cake and because even though he didn't lose any fights while he was on Wano mainland, he didn't finish them either. Sanji was dominating Page One but since he didn't finish him, people thought he would fight a tobbi roppo member in the raid on Onigashima. Now Sanji has clashed with King, been shown to be winning in any exchange he's had with Queen, and held off King and Queen for a period of time. He's also being set up to get a power up. Zoro is also being set up to get a power up. By the end of the Wano arc we'll have no idea how close they are to Luffy. It's also important to remember that while Luffy will be the main force to take out Kaido, he's had a ton of help and he may not be exactly equal to Kaido either. The gap between Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji seem to vary from small to large. Right now I'd say the gaps are small.
The biggest issue here is just that people aren't used to reading weekly so when they see Sanji not.doing much for years they just assume he's lesser when he's really not
No its because of clear plot holes with him. It showed him like 2 months ago having to high diff vergo, then as he should, getting smacked by dofflamingo easily. But now....for no discernable reason hes fighting queen.....and narrative wise he'll probably win. Zoro at least never struggled, always deferred to luffy, and then we find out his ashura is CC, there's no reason to think he was up there with the other 2. Wanna complain blame oda, he should've mentioned sanji grinding after seeing how strong just the right hand of a warlord was
@@bobbob-zc1nx I personally believe that the Strawhats get stronger after a large fight as opposed to doing individual training like is displayed in other anime. In Enies Lobby, Sanji could barely damage Blueno and does not train at all and is then able to pretty easily overpower Jyabura with Diable Jamble for example. I Zoro did most of the fighting in Dressrosa while Sanji didn't fight until Doffy and then he left to Zou. On the other hand, Sanji did a lot of fighting in WCI while Zoro was undercover in Wano thus bringing them back to a similar playing field where they were both fighting throughout most of Wano when the other SH's get there. I don't think it is incorrect to say Zoro was stronger throughout Dresserossa-most of Wano because he was most active during that time and only recently Sanji came back to that level though his fights.
@@bobbob-zc1nx Its sumn that's been going on since the beginning of the series so not sure why you complaining now. And you also dont heed the context of those fights. Sanji prior to fighting vergo, nami was in his body and was taking hella damage. So the sanji that fought vergo wasnt at 100%. And we've already seen fights where sanji breaks his bones and still wins. Like in his fight with mr. 2. And after fighting Vergo, Sanji kept walking and running normally like nothing happened the rest of the arc. As for his fight with doffy he had no knowledge of how doffy df functioned. And doffy himself acknowledged he was strong. We already saw the same happen to luffy when he fought doffy. Regardless like the video addressed sanji is used to elevate other characters/enemies strength such as vergo,doffy,etc, even at the cost of his protrayal which may make him appear weak in some instances but regardless he will always be #3.

Everyone is reading the same story. Oda loves sanji, but a lot of the Fandom doesn't like how oda uses him. But this is what oda wants. He knows Luffy and Zoro will be favorites because they are power oriented. If this was a show like toriko that is all about food, then sanji would be more liked. This is a Shonen and bad ass characters will always be more liked. That's why every time a new candidate pops up, everyone hopes that sanji gets replaced. But Oda likes Sanji so he will always be in the monster trio

I mean it's a shonen, the assumption is that a bunch of fight hungry teen are the only ones that watch One Piece but there are a lot of other older viewers or just some with different perspectives that overall still place Sanji as the 4th most popular character in One Piece world wide.

It really isn't complicated. *The East Blue 5* are the heart of the crew. He needs someone who shares his love of combat (Zoro), someone with his sense of humor/a friend to laugh with (Usopp), he needs someone who can navigate him to his dream (Nami) and he needs someone who shares his love for food (Sanji). And within those 5, there is the monster trio, seeing as Zoro shares his affinity for combat, that would explain why Zoro is constantly shown as comparable to Luffy. Sanji and Zoro are a different story, their rivalry stems from having fundamentally different beliefs ( I can go in detail if you want) but they are still friends.

As far as new crew mates being perceived as stronger than Sanji goes it actually goes back even further than Franky. As someone who was reading the Manga as far back as Alabasta people thought the same thing about Robin. It really is ridiculous that people still think someone will ever supplant him, ITS NOT HAPPENING PEOPLE.

Thats literally the order. The Doriki of CP9 confirms it pretty much. Zoro and Sanji had an easier time while Luffy had a really hard time beating his opponent. So the gap between the three is really close but its still clear who is stronger.
@@GioHimonPro yeah but Luffy defeated 2 members, Blueno~ 820 Douriki, Lucci~ 4000 Douriki if we add them we will get 4820. While Kaku and Jabura are 2200 and 2180, if we add them together we will get 4380. So here is the difference, that’s why i think after EL, Luffy was leagues ahead of them.
@@GioHimonPro Sanji's opponent had 20 doriki less cause he was already beaten and injured by Califa. If their opponents had the same doriki fans would think Sanji was stronger.
We all know which people pushed for the idea of Monster Trio not being a thing or that Jinbei is replacing him and once again those people show why they are the worst part of the fandome.
i mean, when it was first announced jinbe was joining it was confusing to see if he was going to be stronger or weaker than sanji because of all of jinbe’s feats. But now we can see that oda isn’t changing the Og trio.

I wonder if the reason oda have one of zorro eye close is to go along with sanji having one eye always covered cause before time skip sanji had his other eye cover and after it was switch while zorro now only looking through one eye which is the same side eye sanji was before timeskip so if you pair them together you get a full pair of eyes
The fact that this argument is such a heated thing in the One Piece fandom (to which I'm very new) is so interesting to me, bc I've never been in a fandom (or maybe certain subsections of a fandom) that placed so much importance on who was the strongest before! Maybe it's bc I tend to favor characters who unambiguously AREN'T the strongest in their story, but strength has never been a factor for me when deciding which characters I like best. Sanji is my favorite of these 3 and it doesn't really matter to me how he stacks up against Zoro bc what I love about him is his skill as a cook and his kindness! I think it's entirely accurate to say Sanji doesn't always get to show off in fights bc that's not his primary role in the crew and being a strong fighter isn't directly related to his ultimate goal. For Zoro, being the strongest is the whole point (world's strongest swordsman), for Sanji being strong is a means to an end (can't find the All Blue if you're not strong enough to survive the journey!)
The thing about Yamato that so many people aren’t considering is that the Monster Trio isn’t just a power level. It’s a dynamic. It’s not a matter of strength but also a matter of character. Even if Jinbe and Yamato are powerful enough that they *could* supplant or rival Monster Trio members, that doesn’t fundamentally change that the Monster Trio will always be Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji.
I think it's important to know that among the East Blue 5 there are multiple trios and character dynamics: Luffy-Zoro-Nami: The main trio, the characters that tend to get the most focus overall and the initial 3 crew mates. Luffy-Zoro-Usopp: A dynamic where they act dumb or silly and annoy Sanji or Nami. Luffy-Zoro-Sanji: The Monster Trio. Luffy-Nami-Usopp: Usually made for jokes about Luffy being reckless and Nami and Usopp being scared. Luffy-Nami-Sanji: Again usually used for jokes where Luffy is being silly or dumb and Sanji and Nami get annoyed at him. Luffy-Usopp-Sanji: Way more earlier on, but they were the pervert trio in places like Alabasta. The biggest addition has been mostly Chopper to add someone to cower along with Nami and Usopp.
I totally agree with the video, the dynamic changes swiftly from being both sanji and zoro standing side by side and helping out luffy, and luffy and zoro standing out compared to sanji and the rest of the strawhats. I think there is a reason to it, and that is Sanji is first and foremost a chef before anything else, so his mentality and his motto is really different than the other two, like "i'm gonna do whatever it takes to defend you, and when the time comes i will put my life on the line to defend you guys". Luffy and Zoro, besides that, they want to prove that they are respectively the strongest pirate and strongest swordsman. Therefore, the two are more battle oriented than Sanji. But, when it comes to defending the honour and lives of Luffy and the rest of the crew, Sanji and Zoro are the ones stepping up to the plate.
as a sanji fan i think its painted clearly many times zoro is stronger but still inferior to luffy. kinda like a dominant (right) hand is stronger than the other however still comparable in strength
It’s as easy like this . Scopper gabban silvers Rayleigh. Silver is superior to copper. The third strongest will always be inferior to the second strongest. Zoro end of series will the World strongest swordsman. Sanji won’t be the strongest anything

All this proves is zoro is the most flexible character for oda. He can put him anywhere and zoro won’t complain or look bad. But oda will never make that same parallel with luffy & sanji. sanji and zoro are not equals and fans just have to accept that. Not really. Zoro as a character can only do one thing, be bad ass. His promise to Luffy made sure he will never be humiliated. Which is why Zoro can never be the focal point of a good arc like Sanji was in wci
Yeah there is Morj is high. Saying there isn’t an answer is like saying Yonko aren’t significantly more powerful than their crew. The gap between all 3 of them was small early on but it slowly widened as the series progressed. Just look at their bounties. First Luffy wasn’t even double Zoro then he was more than double, now he’s more than 3x as high. Lucci was almost twice as strong as Kaku/Jabra which is how I’ve been treating Luffy which has been accurate portrayal. Zoro and Sanji have been fighting irrelevant people while Luffy has had to take down people like Doflamingo, Cracker, Katakuri. Zoro looked ok against Fuji since Fuji doesn’t have a cheap ability like Doflamingo but it was obvious he’d get destroyed if the fight continued with Fuji being serious. Doflamingo broke out of Aokiji’s ice casually and wasn’t afraid of him or Fuji yet shits his pants when he hears Kaido’s name. Fuji couldn’t come close to one shotting base Luffy vs Kaido one shotting Gear 4. Yonko>>>Fleet Admiral>Commander=Admiral. Zoro has also said he expects Luffy to be significantly stronger than him or he won’t be satisfied. After this arc ends Luffy will be strong enough to solo his crew just like the Yonko can do to their crew. Even Roger vs Rayleigh shows this because Roger ran through Oden easily who was the same level as Rayleigh/Scopper. The only reason Zoro gets paired with Luffy is bc he’s his right hand. There’s never any portrayal that they’re equal in strength since Enies Lobby
What do you mean oda doesn’t make luffy and sanji comparable? Does he really have to spell it out that Sanji is the one that holds luffy back when he tries to break the fridge and steal the food?
Since Wano is the most recent arc our perceptions are a little bit bias toward Zoro, but we need to remember that almost all of the Whole Cake arc was about Sanji. Both Sanji and Zoro got their chance to shine in their element. They were both depicted as being either on or near Luffy's level. The important thing is each Strawhat is able to be a force alone but together the group is unstoppable.
That is a great analysis, as always. And I think that what add more to it, is the fact that its never clear if Sanji is not depicted in the big moments just because he cant, or if it is because of some other random reason. We saw that right now in Wano. Oda created a full situation to prevent Sanji to go to the rooftop, which raises the question: How well Sanji would have gone there? He created a similar situation in TB too.

Interestingly enough. When a fight starts Luffy usually rushes ahead. Followed by Zoro while Sanji stys behind to rather protect the crew. Zoro then stays behind to let Luffy advance and Sanji then catches up with Zoro. It's always been implied since Alabasta that it's luffy>=Zoro>=Sanji
Seeing OP fans argue about the monster trio and crew dynamics has made me realize that most people don’t know how literature and story telling works. We should all know by now that Sanji is “measuring stick” in seeing how lethal antagonists are to our other protagonist…
Zoro is also sometimes used as a measuring stick on the Big Bad, on how even Zoro is unclassed by the enemy and only Luffy is able to take him down (Arlong, Enel, Lucci, and now the yonkous)
@@davidv1341 if you notice when Zoro “loses” in place for luffy to save the day Oda always makes a reason. IE: Arlong was scared to death of him if he was fully healthy, luffy is rubber for Enel, literally made to be beat by luffy. With Lucci he already fought but was injured (I do think Lucci would’ve won high diff though, but who knows). With the Yonkos even luffy can’t do it by himself, Zoro was just as impressive especially before luffy awakened
i think this more proof of how fast and loose and overall ambiguously Oda likes to handle powerscaling in One Piece. Still wild to me that so many take it so seriously, shit's fun but my god people love to focus almost solely on that aspect because it's a battle shonen without understanding the priorities of the story, ignoring the very obvious cues Oda has given time and time again regarding how he goes about it.

One thing Morj forgot to say is about "investment". Luffy Zoro Sanji has been deeply rooted in the fans' heart, they will never change. Years has been put into this.
