The way I use conversion on tanks is to build a lot of cheap medium tanks from the beginning of the game keeping a couple mils on them for basically the whole game. Then converting them to whatever specialty vehicle, AA,SPG,TD that I happen to need cheap and quick.
@andromidius
@andromidius 3 месяца назад
I was going to say this too. Keeping 'support tanks' (AA, SPA, flame tanks, etc) one tier of chassis behind the 'battle tanks' is my go to when I'm using a variety of vehicle types. Keeps them cheap and quick to convert from old stockpiles.

You are actually saving some of all the resources because the converted tanks take less production capacity and thus less time consuming resources from the factory. So if it took 1 factory day to make one tank from scratch, but 0.7 factory days to convert one tank, then you're saving 0.3 of each resource the factory uses in a day.

FYI for production upgrades you don't have to spend army/navy/air xp to have it apply. One of the advantages over stat upgrades.

I use conversion as Germany mostly. For planes get the 1940 frame and engine a little early, build the most expensive parts and get efficiency going and later one once you've researched the guns etc, that's an easy refit. For tanks I'll either build the basic freebie frame in mass numbers to get divisions trained and then upgrade and convert as new tech comes online while growing production efficiency.

actually u re supposed to keep 2 production lines and match the production output of both lines... for instance: line 1 has a certain amount of mills making 50 cheap tanks/day(requires only steel) line 2 has a certain amount of mills making 50 of the final tank design, converting the original chassis. with conversion tech u skyrocket the production output. at the end of the day, you would have less tanks (by an unsignificant amount) but you save a lot of tungsten that you might not have(ex : germany) this also allows u to start building tanks since 1938(3 men turret, hmg) so u can upgrade the mio up until early 1939 when u have the final design for the tank (when u start converting) it is focused mainly on saving tungsten and chromium as ussr it shouldnt be a reason to worry, but as germany u lack those 2 resources unless u re trading with someone else that trades back
@notsaltgawd
@notsaltgawd 3 месяца назад
forgot to mention: ai makes terrible divs to counter tanks and terrible tanks so there s no need to overstack armor. 1938 chassis would suffice since u can stockpile a lot of them and convert them into really useful tanks

@@notsaltgawdI had placed few tanks battalions into inf divs (4,5km/h, full armor, 2 AA battalions). This was one slow sweep, AI just coudn't stop me at all and i didn't needed to stop either. Without any air support i could push/grind AI with ease, and with air support it was just overrun. This was madness. (10/3/2) P.S i took 200k losses while Axis over 9 mil.

I think there's a good argument to be made in utilizing and investing into equipment conversion with the introduction of MIOs since each upgrade to stats done via an MIO relegates all older equipment to an outdated model which can be converted into the newest model with the most current stat upgrades that your MIO provides. As long as you're in the green when it comes to surplus equipment in your equipment reserves/stockpiles, then there's no real downsides to immediately converting your old equipment to the newest models with the best possible stats your MIOs confer. For example, you could choose to build a bunch of upgraded infantry equipment from scratch paying the full industrial cost for each gun, or you could click the convert button after an MIO upgrade and upgrade all your infantry weapons in stockpiles for a fraction of the cost of a newly minted gun. And, if you prioritize upgrades to elite shock troops over regular deployed general infantry over infantry divisions in training, then you can get the best guns to your best troops in the shortest possible window. I don't really see any downsides to this unless you are running an equipment production deficit or are about to train a shit ton of new divisions that need guns.
@quujj
@quujj 3 месяца назад
I agree with this, except with planes. If you have 30k guns in stockpile there is no reason not to just convert all of them to better guns. With planes, on the other hand, quantity is undoubtedly a quality. I would rather more planes than spend mils on converting 800 fighters to add +5% reliability.

It can be handy in singeplayer: As germany for example, you start early producing 1940 mediums, as you do. During that time your MIO upgrades. You apply the new mio upgrades and exchange the production line. From 1940 tank old mio - - > new mio. You do not lose production effiency. Than you upgrade your old tanks. Your old 1940 tanks may gain 10% breakthrough or more relaibilty. Also possible when you upgrade to medium 2 cannon. Is it gamebreaking? No its not. Is it min maxing? I guess so.

It also happens to be historically accurate. Earlier models of equipment were upgraded to the new standard quite often especially in the early years.

Question I was hoping to ask on a next video and now it is relevant for this one so bonus. I was making basic medium flame tanks AND basic medium anti air. Now when I wanted to convert they both wanted to convert from the same pool. EG the AA also wanted to convert stocked flame tanks and the flame tank also wanted to convert stocked AA. Is there anyway to prevent this?
@miguelrodriguezcimino1674
@miguelrodriguezcimino1674 3 месяца назад
I think you save the difference in resource cost. So, the base model you have in the stockpile costed 2 steel to produce. The new model costs 4 steel. When you upgrade the model, it costs you another 2 steel because you already "paid" for half of it when producing the original model. It does have one advantage that you don't need all the steel at once. Since you can't stockpile resources, you can use half the steel one week and the other half the next week. I think it cost more IC in the long run, but if you have a heavy shortage of the resource, the production penalty may be already wasting IC.

Hey Dave, could you elaborate a bit on modernizing and the difference to conversion, also in AA ART and the tanks, air?
@jevoniscool

Best use ive found is turning outdated (and outclassed) fighters into a support role, such as cas or nav which are still effective assuming air supiority. Also early was tanks into arty to bolster infantry divisions for cheap.
@tomdove6427
@tomdove6427 3 месяца назад
One confusing thing with MIOs is that you assign a MIO to the tank itself and to the production line itself with that very annoyingly small button in the top middle of the production line.
@Booth-
@Booth- 3 месяца назад
The only way this works is if you want to start building your 1940 tanks but forgot to get the right cannon research. So you make the absolute cheapest production tank with the -% modifiers. Then convert once you get all the tech you need.

I only use convertion for planes. Always one line to convert, if I modified my current design with more/better guns, or convert older ones into cas. That way my fighters are always top notch and who cares if some cas gets shot down, wich are outdated airframes wich would be even more useless as fighters.

You could convert light tank 1 to light tank destroyer 2 at the time because historically that was kind of what happened.. the Stug III was basically using a Panzer 3 chassis and traded off a turret for the long 75mm on the Panzer IV.. basically a medium tank 1 chassis using the gun of a medium tank 2... hence being able to convert med1s into med2 TD or SPG.
@nox5555
@nox5555 23 дня назад
somebody used his smoothbrain cannon for this video... If you produce with 30 Mills and refit with 10 you only need the tungsten and chromium for 10 mills. Also conversion is very nice on germany, turning your poland and france light tanks into AA or flame tanks.
@einruberhardt5497
@einruberhardt5497 3 месяца назад
The cost per factory stay the same and is basically the difference between the base model and the new one. You save because the conversion costs is only a fraction of the total base costs. So per piece you overall save the amount of ressource equivalent to 1-ConversionIC/BaseIC this is the amount of ressource you save for the added ressources. Thats why its important to make as less changes as possible to your model i.e. mostly the gun or the piece that costs the most but doesnt add to much in conversion costs as you want to have ConversionIC/BaseIC as low as possible.
@DrewPicklesTheDark
@DrewPicklesTheDark 3 месяца назад
Haven't tried myself, but the reason it might not have saved tungsten and chromium is since the base model you were converting from didn't use any. It looks like you only save the difference.

I like to use conversion. Especially with how I build tanks… cheap variant as main production line and a super variant being given 1/5th as many factories. Once i reach a few hundred/thousand cheapos in stock pile, I’ll start refitting them to super.

U dont even save 50% steel bc u used that 2 steel to make the cheap variant, then u didnt had to use it when u refit, so basically u dont save any resources but u waste alot of production cost.

Yeah, but you don't need all the steel at once. It would be like a workaround to the issue of not being able to stockpile resources. For example, say the tank model you want cost 4 steel, 2 tungsten, 2 chromium. You put 20 factories in a production line. That's 80 steel, 40 tungsten, 40 chromium. But you only have acess to half of each, 40 steel, 20 tungsten, 20 chromium. You'll have a production penalty for 50% lack of resources. Now, you can design a cheaper model which will cost 2 steel, 1 tungsten, 1 chromium. Produce a bunch of cheap tanks and then upgrade them to the expensive one. I don't know if this would be a viable strategy, I haven't run the numbers, but it would be interesting to see if the IC cost of the upgrade offsets the penalty of the resource shortage.
@bigbenhgy
@bigbenhgy 3 месяца назад
@@miguelrodriguezcimino1674 It's not 100% like this, because it's hard to calculate the production for refitting also the extra production bonuses, but let's say you have 20 mills like in your example. If you use those 20 on a tank that needs 4 steel 2 tungsten and 2 chromium you need 80 steel, 40 tungsten and 40 chromium. But if you can use 10 mills to make a very cheap variant (2steel only for example) and 10 to refit it for your intended variant, and it's either the same overall tank output or close, you can save a lot of resources, then the first 10 mills only use 20 steel and the other will use 2 steel, 2 tungsten and 2 chromium each (I think the resource usage is the difference between the 2 tank variants) so 20, 20, 20. Overall 40 steel, 20 tungsten and 20 chromium. You saved 50% of resources! This was viable on earlier patches, with the conversion bonuses from mid game it might still be.
@romandelasalle
@romandelasalle 3 месяца назад
The only 3 things that are viable for me are: upgrading the tanks in use (doing a mk3 version and convert the original ones because you have a good stockpile so the divisions get the mk3 faster) or converting older chasis into anti-air or anti-tank, and if you don't have enough steel just to feed your divisions with the best posible tank.
@lucluc6292

Is there a situation where it is worth to buy cheap tanks and then converting them into the variants? So you constantly buy them instead of producing them.

With this conversion it reminded me of an exploit or bug whatever you want to call it that I found in the dlc of arms againts tyrany with the international market I will try to explain this exploit or bug as best as possible and that is to select the tank or plane that you want to have It has to be one that has already been produced in a certain quantity. Oh, it comes from a base, as an example for the exploit, the CR 32 of Italy in its base unmodified version, which the country has about 300. Well, you are going to take these 300 that you have deployed. You are going to use them. disband and in turn if you have an active production line of said model the cr 32 you are going to eliminate it or change it for a different one and you are going to put them on the international market for sale but you are not going to sell them you just leave them there now You go to the aircraft designer, in this example you go to the design already created based on the CR 32 and you edit it, for example, you change the engine and add another pair of machine guns, to your surprise, a new variant is not created since by eliminating the production line and not have any cr 32 in your stockpile, you can freely edit your plane to suit and update it to your liking now after you finish editing your plane or tank you have to cancel the cr 32 from the international market so that they return to your stockpile and you will have instead of obsolete cr 32 that comes from base you will have cr 32 with all the updates that you put into it without creating another variant of the cr 32 this also alters those that were sold and owned by other countries like Hungary which has some cr 32 in their base version but by doing this they will have the updated version that you modified. I hope you understand what I wanted to convey with this enormous text because I don't speak fluent English.
