Just as I finished pulling my espresso shot your video comes up. So instead of making my traditional long black, I decided to make a traditional macchiato. Thank you for your wonderfulness and have a beautiful day
What a great video. Thank you guys!! A macchiato is my go to drink at a cafe and at home. when I think of an original macchiato I think of a double shot of espresso with 3 teaspoons of steamed milk micro foam. No liquid milk makes it to the glass just the foam.
Thank you for putting out this video. I’m an American who spent six years in Southern Europe. During my three years in Napoli (Naples, Italy) I developed a love of all things espresso, and cafe macchiato is a personal favorite. I try to explain to my fellow Americans that cafe macchiato (“marked” or “stained” coffee) is a single shot of espresso marked with a dab of steamed milk and they look at me like I’ve lost my mind. The first time I went to a Starbucks and was given a lungo (large, or long pull shot of espresso) under a big mound of dry foam I was disgusted. And if it has caramel syrup it’s not espresso, it’s a freakin’ milk shake!
Drives me nuts. I went to Blue bottle coffee nearby, and when I order a macchiato they give something that's a mini cortado. There's one person that works at that location that knows a proper macchiato.
I'm more of a Cortado person, but no one knows what it is if ask for one, lol. I do have one new customer that asks for an espresso macchiato but always explains what she wants because she apparently gets the incorrect drink when she orders it at other shops. Thank you for your info.
Cortado is also my go to, abroad, in Melbourne, a Magic is very similar, in NSW it gets complicated, small, double shot latte with 2/3 milk:) And at home, 30g espresso, 30g cream, 70g milk - beautiful!
I can assure you that in Italy the expression "un macchiato" or "un caffè macchiato" are referring to your first one: an espresso with some drop of milk added at the top. The milk could be hot (macchiato caldo) or cold (macchiato freddo). So it would be better if anyone who want to use an Italian word or expression could keep the same meaning as in the original language. Just to avoid misunderstanding

@@Kalimerakis I am sorry, Sometime my keyboard (or my fingers) write a thing different from what I would have wanted to write. I edited my previous comment to fix it.
What a great video to clarify things up. Even though I never drink milk based coffees. But I will certainly give this a try... *Now to look for an espresso machine!
Definitely cleared up alot of confusion! Can't drink alot of coffee anymore - so now I know what to ask for - I'd go for espresso macciato or cortado 👍👍
I have this issue at the Cafe I work for. I have the employees and myself explaining the guests our is a traditional macchiato that it is 1 shot with a mark of foam and it serves in a 4oz mug. They confirm that is what they want. They get it and look so confused. They were expecting a latte. A guest told me But McDonalds does their macchiato like this. Errrrrm ok goodbye 😒😑
I used to work at Starbucks (it was awful) and although I don't claim to be a coffee expert and Starbucks definitely does not follow Italian traditions when it comes to coffee, I'll explain how we were taught to make the caramel macchiato. So first we add the syrup then the steamed milk and then add the espresso shot on top. I'm now learning that this makes some sense because it "stains" the foam with a dot of espresso like you said, but then when you add the caramel sauce it sort of covers it up. But hey this is America and we love our sugary drinks. Also the iced macchiato is the same thing it goes vanilla, milk, ice, espresso, with the espresso sitting on top of the ice and milk, and then caramel. So in a way the carmel and the espresso stain the milk. Pretty clever for an American market but a total bastardization of the original Italian classic. Definitely more a latte than a macchiato. I'm just remembering that Starbucks does offer the original Italian drink under the name "Espresso Macchiato" and the description is "our rich espresso with a dollop of steamed milk and foam" I remember someone ordered that once and i tried to ring them up for a regular macchiato and they were confused why it cost like 6 dollars. Then someone told me it was a different drink. I guess this is what they meant!
@emmaflores7463 it's scummy as it is essentially making a different product, but most people wouldn't notice, and it lets the barista simplify the creation so I get why they would do it
He made the Starbucks one slightly different. The Vanilla syrup and steamed milk(steamed milk unless it’s an Ice version)go in before the Espresso shot. The Espresso shot sits on top of the milk and then the caramel drizzle gets added
Macchiato is my favorite type of espresso based of drink, i mean the espresso with stained milk foam.. i always get buzzed when i ordered macchiato, but served with cortado (more milk in it) 🤣
When you talk about single shot vs double shot, what do you mean? Is a single espresso, 18g in? If so, for a macchiato do you tend to stick to a 1:2 extraction ratio and extract 36g of coffee?
I have not made macchiato but I do order it. The way your make it. Call me a purist... it's no longer a macchiato the moment it becomes a milk drink. As for Starbucks, that's just blasphemy.
The difference with the starbucks caramel macchiato is that it is a latte macchiato, so milk stained with espresso (though the ratios are a bit different), then it is also stained with caramel drizzle. It's an extra sweet caramel latte macchiato. The milk goes in first, then the espresso, then the drizzle.
okay okay, I was at work yesterday and for the very first time someone asked for one so I went to the little book thing w the coffees and it said it's hot milk and flavored syrup? no coffee?
Latte macchiato with soy/coconut milk is my favorite way to drink coffee 💜 something about taking a sip of it just hits just right for me, expecilly when the alternative milk is perfectly sweet!
Didn't the original macchiato originate from when an espresso was pulled poorly, so it was marked with milk to take the excess sourness or bitterness off while still being able to sell it at a slight discount? I ordered a macchiato in the US and was served a litre cup of gross black coffee and ice. American coffee in general is pretty poor from my experiences. When I offered a macchiato at Uni, my American friend from the US was blown away that the volume was so tiny 😂
If I want a nice cup of espresso after eating a nice dinner I’ll order a macchiato. If I want a sweet coffee flavored drink on my lunch break I’ll go to Starbucks and get there machiatto. I like them both
Cheers for the read! Super informative! Not being Italian, nor having a great deal of firsthand experience in Italian Coffee, your read was great! And Google Translate for the win, since I don't speak/read Italian! :D :D
Oh yeah, so much confusion over a cup of ☕️. I’m a classic guy, and so, prefer the “original” version of the macchiato. Starbucks’ is just a dessert disguised as coffee, a bit of a mockery. But hey, who am I to judge. Each to their own, I guess. 🤷🏻♂️
funnily, you won't get this when ordering caramel machiato from starbucks or other similar cafe who sell overly sweet drinks 😆 me as barista be like "why did you put caramel syrup in a latte and called it machiato? this is blasphemy"
Hi, I know this video of yours is a year old, and I don’t know how many people may have already mentioned this about the Starbucks caramel macchiato. Which, I don’t drink it anymore, but I was a barista at Starbucks, and I work at a coffee shop on a college campus that is a Starbucks partnership, and the proper way to make a Starbucks caramel macchiato is the following , you might wanna update your video, vanilla syrup, steamed milk, shots of espresso through the top of the steam milk and then you finish it off with the caramel sauce
