The US National Weather Service says nearly one half of the population of the United States is under an active heat warning. The west of the country is experiencing record temperatures - with Las Vegas at almost 49 degrees Celsius this week.
And it's been a similar story elsewhere in the world, where experts say climate change is causing heat waves to grow more frequent on practically every continent. The World Health Organization has found that extreme temperatures cause more deaths worldwide than any other weather-related factor.
So with more and more people all over the globe being exposed to sustained heat - we take a closer look at the risks.
For more on this, we talk to our science correspondent Derrick Williams.

We must seriously consider species like fungi. At the moment, fungi cannot survive if the host's temperature is over 94 degrees. And for a long time, there have been no reasons for fungi to evolve to be able to withstand higher temperatures. Well, now there is reason to evolve. If they evolve to withstand higher temperatures, any one of them could be capable of burrowing in our brains and taking control, not of millions of us but billions of us; puppets with poisoned minds, permanently fixed on one unifying goal, to spread the infection to every last human alive by any means necessary. And there are no treatments for this, no preventatives, no cures, they don’t exist and it’s not even possible to make them. And if that happens, we lose

You must factor in humidity. Wet bulb temperature changes things radically, especially at higher temperatures.
@unicorn-glasses
@unicorn-glasses 2 месяца назад
Exactly, this is something that has to be considered. Here in the southeast US, where I live we've reached 99°F so far in regular temperature, but that's like 113 (that's not exact, just a rough estimate) in wet bulb temperature. When I went to visit a western state a few years ago it was somewhere around 95-99 the whole time but to me it felt like it was in the 80s because the humidity was so much lower. It's like a rainforest here and that makes a huge difference. If you can't sweat and have it evaporate, you're in trouble.

I'm irritable when it's hot outside, I can't concentrate, have no appetite, just drink water and go to the bathroom. Last week here in California, it started to reach 78/79F, I can't focus, I felt nausea, had headache when I was between the heat outside and enter cold indoors, especially in the freezing supermarket.

I have told people for decades that I can't stand the heat. Even 75° Fahrenheit makes me sick. I get dizzy, nauseous, my body feels heavy, I get very angry, and I can't concentrate. I am a 34 year old female, about average weight, and my husband even mentions quite a bit that my body can be like a furnace at night. I think my body just tends to run hot. I don't know if it's genetics or not but I have fantasized about moving to Norway or even Alaska. Montana is too hot in the summer.
@KtotheG
@KtotheG 2 месяца назад
@@PrincessSlaya758 Try living in the Carolinas... we would take a 75 degree any day during the summer. That's our spring and fall temperature. I remember in 2020 during the pandemic, in the month of May, there were highs in the 60s and 70s all month. It was so weird, because those are unusual temperatures for us during that month. I loved it. I would love to move further up north, but not too far, because I don't like long, brutal winters, either. I prefer to have 4 distinct seasons.
@PrincessSlaya758
@PrincessSlaya758 2 месяца назад
@@KtotheG yeah it's 94° today and the smoke is thick from all the wildfires surrounding us. And our spring was long and it was cold and rainy for longer than usual but I LOVED it!!!!! I have lived here most of my life and so the long snowy winter is something I'm use to but it can get very frustrating having to deal with 3+ feet of snow and -20° temps. But some months the winter isn't horrible. If I had the ability to control the seasons I would make it spring and fall all year round. Screw summer and screw winter.

I have had to reduce my Prozac as a consequence of Heat, particularly Humidity, as I was struggling to sweat ie to regulate my core temperature Which is a consequence of taking Prozac I am at high risk for Heat Stroke because of my meds The alarming thing is not many people realise that their Meds might make them more at risk
@jmi5969
@jmi5969 2 месяца назад
Depends on the doctors; in my case (blood cancer) the oncologist and the cardiologist check the weekly tests, adjust dosage and advise on what to do and what not at the peak of the summer. We did quite a few changes when the temperature warmed up in late June - cutting down the least essential meds and minimizing blood pressure intervention.
@unicorn-glasses
@unicorn-glasses 2 месяца назад
Exactly, a lot of people don't realize this. It's generally not listed as a side effect. The most important medication I take is an anti-epileptic/mood stabilizer and I literally cannot decrease my dose or I risk becoming manic/psychotic. I can reduce the other 3, but this one absolutely must remain at this dose and it makes me extremely sensitive to heat. I'd rather get heat exhaustion than have a manic episode so I just deal with it the best I can, but not everyone has that luxury. Like people in jails and prisons. That's a huge issue there (at least in the US). I hope you make it through this summer with the least amount of suffering possible.

Thats a typical German problem because of regulations demanding high isolation standards on buildings. Fine and energy saving in winter, but in summer the building will not lose the heat it collects during the day. My bedroom has two outside walls eastbound and southbound, so sun is on for most of the day. I need huge ceiling fan to make that bearable. So, as we are trying to save the planet in winter, we are suffering from this useless attempt in summer.

Urban planners and governmental agencies need to give serious thought to creating accessible networks of community cooling centers in metropolitan areas and engaging the most vulnerable to the negative impacts of extreme high temperatures. In Texas we are used to 105-113 mid Summer. Its only in the mid 90s now. This is nice a cool for us. I work outside and am of Northern/Western European decent; acclimatization is necessary for both hot and cold weather. If a person is in AC the majority of the time, they will never acclimatize and thus have a far worse reaction in the heat. A person can think of it like training. Additionally, just because you say heat waves are happening all around the world, I am not sure that has been any difference in the last 100 years outside of the cities and heat islands, I think most people just didnt have a choice nor care. What would looking at the temp before they went to work do? Depress themselves? Train the body, train the mind, and train the spirit always to endure.

Wearing linen helps, even cotton is too hot at 40C. We’re well into the second week of a major heat wave where I live. I have to spend all my time in my room with a window AC unit, it’s over 35C in the rest of my house. I haven’t left the house since the heat wave began, I just can’t face getting into my 65C car. It takes at least an hour of driving with the AC on high, and the seat cooler on, to make it comfortable, but my errands are only ten minutes away. So, the car will never cool down to 40C, it’s miserable. I’m thinking of renting a place in a northern, cooler climate for the summers, perhaps Scotland.

I survived working in extreme heat by using the following free hack; 1. Freeze bottles of water. 2. Tie a pair of socks together at the toes. 3. Place two frozen bottles of water inside the socks. 4. Put the sock cooler around your neck. 5. Tie the loose ends together and tuck inside your shirt. 6. Will keep you cool for about two hours in extreme heat. 7. When the ice melts you have ice water at your disposal.
