If extra attempts on timer resets were allowed, dishonest cubers could just force a timer reset when they get a bad scramble or a bad solve, so that's not a good solution.

Great video. But I just wanna make clear that giving extras for timer resets is not an option. One can easily make a reset appear accidental if the solve is going badly.

Even for stackers, speedstacks timers have always had various issues. The generation 3 timers would often turn off with 8:88.888 shown if stopped too hard, even when the batteries are brand new. And the gen 4 timers did not fix this issue. The only generation timer I found not to experience any issues was the generation 2 non-save timer, which was discontinued all the way back in 2011. And yes, normal resets occur far too often to be acceptable. Not only should the timers be redesigned, they should also be vigorously checked for bugs before release, which speedstacks clearly failed at doing.

Everything you mentioned is correct. In WSSA sport stacking competition (which the timers are originally made for) If the timer does any of this (except for the 8:888:888 malfunction) its DQd and we lose one of our three attempts. The timers record to 0.000 because in Sport stacking there used to be an insane amount of ties and the new decimal place brought down the amount of ties by a lot and Ive won several events in tournament because of that new decimal place. It would be really cool if you guys designed and built your own timers, id love to see it Also, there are timers that reset when you place your hands down on the touch pads after a few seconds, but they arent compatible with the tournament displays.

There might be an even EASIER fix. Just make the timer have a "memory" function of the previous "valid" time that isn't 0:000. That way if it does get reset it would still remember.

Hey thanks for making this video. I got my stack mat gen4 three months ago and it has not bugged out on my once. I think that the WCA and the manufacturers have made a conscious effort to try to prevent this. Thanks again 👍

I have never experienced a timer reset, nor in competence nor at home, but I’m pretty sure that feeling might be really bad. I have friends who experienced that problem and they looked really disappointed. I hope cube brands start taking care of that issue.

Thank you for bringing up this issue. Watching those solves ruined by the timer is almost physically painful. I hope that the WCA decides to take action to prevent this in the future. While I don't think the timer redesign needs to go as far as you suggested (I like the 3 decimal places, PB saving is not a large issue, and I'm afraid adding capabilities like inspection is unnecessary and could result in extra complication and expense), I fully agree with your overall point.

For me as a stacker, I understand the issues that you guys face with the timers, as i have faced these issues at stacking tournaments too. I would suggest for you guys to try using the speed stacks gx timers, because the don’t have a reset button but the pads are smaller than the pads on gen 4 and gen 3 timers

During Euros 2019 I experienced the wierdest thing ever with these timers. 4x4, the competitor finished, stopped the timer, and it has stopped for sure. I started writing down the time, and after the seconds, I looked up to check the rest of the time, and the timer was running again, with 1 additional MINUTE compared to the original time...

It's interesting that you mention the timers were new. I have tried several times to deliberately reset my timer (gen 4, just like the ones at worlds) and have never managed it. I've tried to show my non-cuber friends what a timer reset looks like but out of maybe 100+ tries, no success. The buttons must have been really soft or the cubers were hitting really hard. It's really unfortunate that these resets happened and I'm surprised by the frequency at Paris 17. Just put O rings on, easy fix and it's nigh-on impossible to get a reset even if you hit the timer as hard as possible.

I have a mini timer and mat from the Cubicle and it's amazing. There is no reset button, it resets automatically when you place your hands on the timer. In addition, it only shows 2 digits. Cube manufacturers should adopt this system. It doesn't seem to be flawed, like the other one. Edit : it's the GX timer. Someone else in the comment section pointed that out.

Watching this 3 years later I wonder if this video was the reason the new g5 has a cubing mode that has the few seconds of holding down

A comp that I went to (vancouver island 2019) had faulty timers and most of the events had to have their results ignored because of the insane amount of timer resets and malfunctions. Only three events counted, pyraminx, 2x2, and 3x3. It was a disaster and I felt bad for my friend who’s running the comp because the backup timers had not arrived, and the delegate forgot to bring the cube covers so the comp was delayed while his dad went and got makeshift covers. In conclusion, the thing was a disaster.

Just need a non volatile memory in the device so even with a reset or battery death it should store the data

Yeah, they must put on the next-gen timer the reset button somewhere else, maybe in the middle or just, as you said, make it so that you have to hold it down for 1.5/2 seconds to reset.

I am currently working on a form of the G5 timer but oriented toward cubing with longer times (instead of ten minutes, twenty), better ergonomic tilted pads, ringed buttons with slighlty longer press times, and battery indicator displays. You can try this too by **ahem** borrowing SpeedStacks's tech, ordering parts, and 3D printing the design. I will upload a video when I finish.

That's why there is the new Speedstacks G5. Whether you hate it or not this new timer will prevent such things from happening again.

I absolutely agree with everything in this video. O-rings should always be used where feasible, timer resets should *never* happen in a competition solve, and we need to look into making a new timer. There's just one problem. This stuff is expensive to make! I can kinda see a company like Moyu, GAN, or Qiyi making one? But then we have to contend with potential patent issues caused by similar designs with the Speedstacks timer. I realise Chinese companies generally play exceedingly fast and loose with intellectual property, but I'm more concerned with the WCA itself. It's not impossible. I just think it would be very difficult.

Unfortunately there are legal issues. Speedstacks has a patent on timers that are started and stopped this way.

Implementing the speedstacks edge programming would work aswell since that one resets automatically when a new solve starts. That way you can't even hit the reset button

Why are that hand stops not placed away from the controls like a wired gaming controller, that would keep the reset button away from the hands entirely!!!!

They can also make the touch pads a separate part from the controls to avoid any accidental push of the buttons

3:02 "Should the community build a new timer?" I was in the 1982 Rubik's cube world championships, and the timers we used were better than these stack timers. This is nearly 40 years ago. They worked with a light sensor. You picked up the cube, the timer started. You put it down, the timer stopped.
