That must have been so-COOL-to see free performances by Salt-N-Pepa and Kid-N-Play. I didn't know artists performed at colleges either. What did you major in ???
@@joycelynnerobinsonjoycelyn8655 1990,the 90s were tha-BOMB !!! LOL. The 90s had the most R & B groups,best black sitcoms,music in general,films and clothes.
While I appreciate Dione Warrick’s original version, Sybil did the DAMN thing on Walk On By and Don’t Make Me Over. Those two songs along with Falling in Love used to be on repeat each and everytime on my yellow SONY walkman lol. My favorite album cover of Sybil is on her Greatest Hits CD. Her hair, smile and beauty was mesmerizing in that picture.
I'm not familiar with her 🤔 I grew up in the 90s, but didn't remember hearing her music. This was interesting! I'll have to check her music out. Great video, as always!! 😊
What's interesting is that we used to hear her music all the time on HOT 97 FM in New York City (before they changed their format to all hip-hop and R&B), but we really never thought of her as an R&B artist. My friends and I always thought of her as a "Dance / Pop" artist. I guess she technically was making R&B music, but she wasn't really thought of in that way.
...Sybil (along with Cece Peniston) hit when *DANCE CLUB MUSIC* was primed to be the 'sound' of the 90's...but, when R&B hit in 1993 (R. Kelly, Silk, Jodeci), they started to falter; it was RARE for an Artist to have 2 COMPLETELY different Albums out the same time, but Sybil is RIGHT, about 'brown' acts pushed to the wayside.....She was SAW's BEST Singer, behind Donna Summer....
Interesting... Sybil Lynch. To be honest, all I know and love from Ms. Sybil is 1993's _You're the Love of My Life._ I actually listen to that song all the time as it's basically my childhood in a bottle. It's like the sweetest burst of nostalgia ever. I simply never bothered to follow up on her music. I will soon though. She had a good voice. Image and competition are always the elephants in the room. The music industry wanted women to look like Ms. Janet Jackson. Consumers didn't care. Were women in the '80s concerned about Mr. Vandross weight or were they concerned about whether he was gon turn it out when he stepped foot on that stage or not? When Men At Large came out w/ 1992's _So Alone,_ wasn't nobody concerned about they weight. We just loved the song because it got us through difficult times. When Ms. Kelly Price hit the scene w/ 1998's _Friend of Mine,_ I don't remember consumers complaining about her weight. We were simply floored because she was sangin' so doggon good. And then you have competition. Who was Ms. Sybil competition during the early '90s? Well, you had Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Toni Braxton. I mean... (shrugs shoulders) How do you compete in a marketplace w/ women who are guaranteed 24/7 airplay? Each woman had a huge machine behind them. Ms. Sybil was on Next Plateau Records. Chile...
Love her! She’s so right. As an up-and-coming artist myself, the industry is focused on looks, and not talent. I was born in the wrong generation, and I know most haven’t even heard of the term ARTIST DEVELOPMENT! Half of these artists wouldn’t have made it in the Motown and real record label days.
You’re absolutely right. The mainstream artists today would NEVER have made it back then, in fact, they wouldn’t have even made it on MTV Unplugged or BET’s Spring Break Special when artists actually had to have talent, artist development and training before performing LIVE.
Sybil just need to be honest and say " i left the industry because I couldn't sell records". There were plenty of untalented singers out when she was popular, the industry has always been about looks. Janet Jackson, Madonna, pebbles and many other lack vocal talent so please stop acting as if that's a new phenomenon. Even the singer Karyn White spoke-out back then about how talented singers don't get as much recognition as untalented singers.
I know you didn’t bring Janet Jackson into this. Excuse me. Not everyone sings on Mariah, Whitney, or Toni level. Janet is one of the few artists to not lip sync while giving a raw performance. Outta here with that disrespect.
@@richardkelly9971 You sound crazy. I don't expect everyone to be Mariah however Janet is clearly very limited vocally, she's a mediocre singer. She's also the queen of lip syncing, all she does is dance to pre-recorded tracks and that's ok but let's to pretend that she's a live singer.
@@jakemiles1427 I’m crazy? Lol. Almost all the members of the Jackson family are nowhere near mediocrity want to consider their vocal talent. you’re the one who’s crazy. What a vendetta lol. Mediocre is a terrible word to use considering half the baseless talent we have today in the industry.
@@richardkelly9971 The jackson are mediocre vocalists, Micheal and Jermaine are probably the only exceptions. Janet is basically a dancer, she's never been considered a talented vocalist.
@@jakemiles1427 I fell for the bait lol I’m arguing with a troll Online . Ridiculous. All the other artists you mentioned have spoken about how influential that family was BOTH vocally and performance wise. I’m gonna let you go on this one Jake cause the word mediocrity in any shape or form should not be associated with that family. My God lol they’re THE, if not one of the first families of music. Believe what you wanna believe. “this man put Jermaine over Janet LMAO” 🤣 I’m done.
