What Happened To Akron, Ohio?

Akron, Ohio...WOW! High in violent crime with an unreal poverty level, this city is giving Cleveland a run for its money. This Rust Belt city has been on the decline for quite some time now, and a recovery doesn't look like it'll be happening any time soon. There's a lot of vacant houses, empty commercial buildings, and rough areas. The population has been steadily dropping for decades and good jobs are hard to come by. People are simply choosing to leave and find a better opportunity elsewhere. On the upside, the amenities are excellent, housing prices are decent, and overall cost of living is better than average. Provided you can find a job, would you take the trade off? Let's take a drive and check out some of the worst areas!

I was born and raised just south of Akron, when the factories started closing down in the 70's, the decay started. The people who could get, got out.

I was born in Canton (1955) just a 30 min drive North to Akron, I always liked Akron being a really nice town at that time. Of course, that was before the tire manufacturers decided to pull out, I dated a lot of gals in Akron and many times took them to "Quaker Square" and had pizza at the Depot Restaurant there. Honestly, Akron like Canton has been in a downward spiral since the late 70s. I left Canton over 20 yrs. ago, way too much crime, drugs and gangs (broke my heart to see Canton go down hill like it has) to continue to live there, I really miss Akron and Canton the way they use to be, as they both have changed forever along with the rest of the Country and not for the better.......

Sadly the places built to replace them will never have the same feel. Now it is big housing developments with Karens and HOAs, commercial developments with big chains, and sprawling industrial wasteland.

canton is still waaayy nicer than Akron. I am in canton several days a week. even the "rough" parts. I am not scared there like I am in the "rough" parts of Akron.

I could see the problem within the first 20 seconds of this. Some people move out, and other's move in. When the factories leave so does the money. People that can follow the money do, those that can't it seems their just stuck.

Following WWII, some of my relatives moved to North Hill, Akron (at that time predominantly Italian and Irish). Due to various unfavorable changes taking place, they later shifted to farming communities well outside the city limits in the 1960s. The severely damaged sections of the city that are shown here are the result of numerous years of continuous decline. Furthermore, Akron is currently struggling with inadequate leadership, which is a common issue faced by communities experiencing hardships. In my opinion, Akron is a prime candidate for a revival and genuinely merits rejuvenation.

Chrissy sang about her city being gone over 40 years ago. It’s not come back and likely never will. I grew up there and have been gone even longer. The only thing I would get back there for is weddings and funerals. There are still neighborhoods that aren’t as blighted as what we see here. It is a rare place where you can still purchase a livable home for less than 100 grand.

Again, I see nature taking over, like that History show,"Life After People". But I still imagine the lives in these homes. When people mention those nice cars in front of certain homes, remember - it is easier to get a car loan than a home loan. When the businesses go, where do the people go?

Thanks for your video. Great filming. If you do another one, could you narrate? I was raised in Akron. It's astonishing to see things in decay....and in such a short time. Compared to Europe where buildings and old homes lasted centuries, America had a rapid rise and fast decline. ....happening all over the country. Where has it all gone? The work that went into construction was detailed and supposed to last. Now it's all in ruin, after just a couple of generations. Your video is a sad trip down memory lane but thank you.
@11mralman

Lee99, I think why these videos are so popular is because there is no narration, or on-screen appearances by the maker, or any unnecessary music. Fortunately, if you read through the comments, you'll see comments from people who were there at one time, and tell of their memories. I discovered just the quiet visuals of these cities is potent enough!

If you drive the near west side of Akron along Merriman Road, Portage Path and the connecting streets, you can see the enormous wealth that was generated when Akron was an industrial powerhouse during during the early to mid 20th century. Some of the most stately homes in America, and old monied families are still there. It is a city of extreme income inequality.

I lived in stow my whole life until like 2014 we fell on bad terms and bought a house and moved to akron I didnt mind living there. everything worked the water was good the electricity was nice it "worked" better than anywhere I ever lived. But, it was lights on lights out work. There was no life. Nobody had time for unwork related hobbies. I miss it but am glad I lived through all the woes and came back to my home town. Don't get me wrong its a money machine if that's all you want but I needed my soul back.

The “Hood “ is expanding in almost every section of Akron, low income housing, a lot of now rentals, hud homes. Akron used to be a great city to live in, your kids could go play in one of the numerous parks with no fear. Now, parents don’t let the kids roam and be kids, crime is a big issue, taxes are becoming insane for what you get. When it was known as the rubber city and almost everyone known someone that worked at Goodyear, Firestone, BFG ect…it was a prideful middle class city. Poor Akron leadership ushered all the “fair” jobs to be shipped out of state or the country. This story is common across America, hell look at Detroit… people from all over the US moved the for a job from one of the big 3 auto makers, now it’s hood and rich, no middle America. SAD
