Too many people no longer care about it being done right as long as it is done right now. The world is all about instant gratification rather than pride in a job well done.
People have no patience to "build" a car. They don't know how to plan a build, research parts, or do the work themselves if a shop price seems too much. Building a car takes time, money, and is a process. They should just go out and drop $30k on a car already done that the owner has lost interest in.
And if it’s quality work why not save the time lol I’m having a shop build an s14 but I don’t have the time with college and a job to do so I guess and for someone who has expertise I’d prefer that the right way
I have moved to to the BMW platform (2000 Golden age) you want to talk about a brand that does not work well with cutting corners. Although I do see it all the time every single day. " oh you have a BMW 3 series with Pep Boy Wheels cut springs and bad camber. Say your variable cam timing system isn't working and your cooling system isn't really working either so your about to blow a head gasket and pull the head bolt threads out the block.... oh you want to cut the muffler off and straight pipe it first..... Cool.... "
I'd like to pushback on this. It's builds like Project Binky, which has been going on since 2013, that I REALLY want to see more of on RU-vid. There's something about thinking about and showing all of the problems with a car, solving them, and then making it all yourself that make those projects all the more worthwhile. As someone that wants to build one day, I'm already looking at the type of tools I would need to fabricate materials. I think it's totally worth the time and effort, but I think people need to think long-term instead of expecting something that'll take more than a Sunday afternoon.
I gave up building cars after I graduated college in 2002. After graduation I bought both an 02 s2k and 02 e46m3. Kept both in mint stock condition since but if you build your car the wrong way, don’t expect it to perform nice or last
Same. But with how the NHTSA is now it will never be like what it once was. They have gotten so strict that the majority of cars are boring and a lot bigger now.
@@Star_Taro literally was looking at a 2008 Miata with the touring package 67k miles manual with the drop top. Dealer was asking 10k I come back 3 months later they’re asking 20k my gawd
Bro when you said “ that stereo was 200 bucks from Best Buy” Holy crap that took me back to working landscaping all summer to buy one from Best Buy so I could play burned CD’s with music I got from lime wire 😂😭 And the kenwood CD player I got for my Honda prelude at the time
Lmao the "your not Ken block now are you" killed me had flash backs to crashing my beetle at 70 mph breaking all of my wheels and having a headlight pull the wire harness across the street
I feel like young enthusiasts like me wanna do our build ASAP but we don’t think the bigger picture which is we have a whole life in front of us that we have more than enough time to accomplish our goals
My favourite car builds on youtube are ones that have taken a long time. Juicebox's AE86 has taken 4 years just to become a rolling shell. Ronald Finger's Fiero restoration was incredibly in depth and showed the entire process, including screw ups. BoostedBoiz's MR2 used to be cobbled together to get another quarter mile run uploaded and they were breaking it every week, but it became truly amazing once they slowed down and started doing things right, which has paid off with it becoming the first 7-second MR2 in the world. I really want to see more long-term projects where something is built up and done right
@Smeedia is one of my favorite RU-vid channels because he actually talks about every single thing that needs to be done for the car to run properly. He is currently building a 6 cylinder boxer engine for a VA chassis sti. He's even rewiring everything correctly to work with a Haltec ECU. The man is a legend. These kinds of builds are the ones I actually watch and not get bored of because they are so unique and teach so much.
Ya im running in to problems even finding parts for my car and its a 2001 bmw wagon, it fighting to know your buying the very last parts available available for your build and if you screw up theres no way to replace them!
"Ya either got deep pockets or you Learn to do it yourself" & that's not really a new trend, it was true for us in the 90's and today. I learned to weld for the sole purpose of doing my own body/ exhaust work cus that shit ain't cheap...same with other trades I managed to pick up over the years. All for wanting not to half ass it
That Red NSX is done pretty well, it has a fully built motor from Ramey Built racing. One of the world record holder for fastest Honda. Its on airlift though, but it's pretty well done. It's my boy Bradley, I'm the yellow S2000 💛 next to him
Agreed. So many today build for looks, then get mad when something like my Evo 8 with paint scratches, a little curb rash and dog hair on the back seat but a ton of money under the hood walks them. Someday when I am finally happy with my mechanical work I will start thinking about looks, but it will be a cold day in hell before I do something for looks that diminishes performance.
You can absolutely do it right on a budget. It just depends on the starting point and desired end product. Patience and perseverance to build it is another story.
About the 3m and self tappers, I agree. however I’m still putting my Z in lowering springs not coils cuz they are way too much, that is unless you guys (Fitment Industries) wanna send me some free ones 😁
I miss all the CRAZY parts for our Vehicle's from the late 1990's & early 2000's... And, (speaking as a 47yo) the "weird stuff" in the JC Whitney Catalogs/Magazines!
I remember watching pics on Instagram of someone building their dream G35. Took two years. And then it was wrecked two months later…. Red light runner lol
tbh I think this is a big part of the reason I find myself so drawn towards the rally scene as apposed to the street car scene. To me it feels like not only can you try your best to make the car look appealing for an open event but then you also have to basically 'test' the build quality you were able to put together when your racing. Of course rally and street cars have very different aesthetics and to each their own for what you prefer, but I almost see it as like 2 sides of the same coin?
Back in the 90's when the small car scene was burgeoning, I took my car to hot rod shows, attention and detail with some original flair got my awards, they didn't except jank. Some of the these shows had only just started to have categories for small car imports/modern back then. I'd get a lot of grief from the V8 guys too. Plan your build and make good relationships with companies you do business with.
That last hour of any install that was supposed to be a quick easy repair is absolutely gruelling, I have learned that its usually best to walk away for a while otherwise corners get cut!!
the satisfaction of having it 'right' beats all the fake highs of getting it 'right now'. i think you're right on with the under 30 crowd being more concerned with fast rather than right those of us who know the feeling of just getting behind the wheel of something right and reliable(ish) is just far superior than seeking approval of shmucks.
Yep! Everyone forgot that this isn't about the likes...it's about you and your ride. It took a little less then a year on my suspension. Over two years on the build itself, the car will be built how I see it...if you done likie...well you didn't payie..for it
Car community is less likely to help you on your build they keep their knowledge super secret especially what it took to build their own vehicles, that being said a lot of stuff the newer generation is suppose to know isn't there or is hard to obtain any basic knowledge.
Because the "car community" is comprised mostly of "clout" chasing dopes. Actual car enthusiasts will gladly give away knowledge and help out fellow enthusiasts with builds. I am one of those people. I'm an open book and love to help other enthusiasts (not that I know it all, but if I can help, I will). Unfortunately, I don't have many car friends because I cannot stand the current "car scene," and I just build my cars for myself and by myself.
@@redheadmetalhead247 I get you most my buddy's aren't knowledgeable about cars nor into mechanical stuff in general so I do it for myself aswell... like you said the car scene isn't what it used to be I cant get into it either unless it's old school forums, channels like this one or hoonigan etc that shows different content and what people really went threw to build their car without those fake "built this car in 10 minutes" vids.
Went to an elite tuner “car show” a bit ago and it was full of cars with shitty paint with dirty ass engine bays and rep wheels there was probably no more than 10 cars were actually show ready
I need to touch on the Slammedenuff Gatlinburg comment, there was equally, if not more junk in that show now then there has been in the past it seems. Everyone is getting lazy from event holders to car enthusiasts, but the quality of cars start with the event holders, they need to give themselves more time to pick cars for the showcase then just hitting the accept button to fill it in. I enjoyed the parking lot cars more so than the actual indoor event.
There is no “the right way” unless youre talking about a ricer vs a racer. There are levels to bulding cars, obviously, but if you slap some wheels on your car and lower it for an agressive look, you can be that simple and clean slow fuck, or you can grab yourself a honda, build it for 10k, and destroy any v8/v6 on a straight or in the mountains
I'm here working on my 2018 Lexus 3iS Suspension with almost all T-Demand Arms for example and it's expensive 😅 Nobody will see it but i do feel the difference in driving and built for me. Want to build a lowered car correctly and with the quality parts 👍🏼
Lets see, im 1 year and a few grand deep into my current volvo C30 project and it still doesnt run. But im also doing all the work myself, in my spare time. Most all work now has been engine internals and performance upgrades like new stainless valves, porting and polishing the exhaust ports, bigger intercooler and boost pipes, custom fabbed 3" catless downpipe, and all new forged internals. Now the block is getting sleeved and I got tired of it looking stock everyday, so i finally copped some enkei ts5 wheels from you guys last week to give me some visual cues that ive actually made some damn progress!
I don't know how anyone can offord to have paint done these days. Last week I was quoted $650 to repaint a bumper cover and that was a cheap job from Maaco.
The story of APC boy! I so remember the days if you had anything APC on your car it was a piece of shit and we even had a kid who we nick named "APC boy." This kid got so tired of his name and me destroying his ek coupe with Stealth RT/TT that he finally sold the APC mobile and bought a VR4! He then couldn't afford parts and wrecked it because a stock 320hp to the crank was to much power! I still kinda feel bad about this but we kept all this stupid bullshit from happening! Also this was like 2004 and I was 20 years old! FUCK I'M OLD!!!!!😥😭
Automotive RU-vidrs should be smart about their builds… build the car well, record the entire process, produce the videos AND THEN. Publish then after the fact! That way you create a cue of videos that you can release at specific regular intervals. Sure you still run into the crunch of needing to maintain projects, but control your outcome, don’t let it control you! Admittedly, that becomes a lot harder when someone is trying to prep a Ferrari for a specific show where there is a real-life deadline… but what’re ya gonna do, true ballin like that takes good friends, a lot of cash,… or BOTH!
me doing religious oil change on my 13 civic si coupe as i dont have racks to throw at it right away instead of just adding spoilers or intake without a tune. so it only has wheels tires and suspension.
Also, the whole "Respect all builds" BS encourages this type of behavior. I am guilty, myself, of taking shortcuts, but it's not for youtube views, or instagram likes. It's simply because it's my only car, I'm a student, and I have a job, so I'm always in a time crunch. BUT I do not take it to shows, or show it off or brag about it, because I know it's NOT done right or even finished. Basically, I do not waste people's time to look at a car not done properly and not close do done period. What pisses me/ alot of people off is people who think their car is a show car and the bumpers are misaligned, the paint is orange peely or swirled, the wrap is crappy, the quarter panels look like soda cans, and they still put it in shows that people spend money to go into.
I find myself doing this exact thing and I know I would be better off just doing it right the first time Example is I've had my Racelands on my Mk5 and I really like it but my wife tipped the scale by saying I need to put some big boy money on some suspension that I like and is still comfortable. Ultimately if you do it wrong for instant gratification you end up spending more time and money later fixing it
If I had a dollar for every time I used a zip tie for a “temporary” fix/mounting then I’d be able to afford the labor it would take to do it right 🤦🏻😂😂
I'm definitely guilty of half ass work on my car. My FMIC (no BS) is held up with zip ties because I don't care! I purchased and $800 clapped out Audi and have built it up while daily driving it since the March of 2020. I didn't build it to be a show car, I built it to be a quick fun daily that I can beat on if I choose to and that I won't cry (too hard) if it gets wrecked.
@@SilverMoon1134 exactly! Honestly though, I can't believe the zip ties have lasted as long as they have. It's been almost 2 years and they are still holding it up. I do plan to fix it correctly but in no hurry to do it. Lol
I think the scene just changed . When I started building cars in 2008 you get laughed out of a meet if you car wasn’t on par . Now the community is just more accepting more inclusive. Because people understand not every one has the budget to fully build a car . when kids come up to me at car meets for advice . I always just tell them practical upgrades are the way to go then worry about making your car look good .
Can't remember the channel but they are putting a r34 gtr chassis on a r35 frame and drivetrain. My question is does it make it legal to drive now or do they have to follow the 25 year law still.
At its core it's an r34 but the reason for the 25 year thing was so that cars that weren't up to US safety specs could actually be imported. So maybe not
@@ilyas5708 but what Vin number would they run on the title the r34 Vin would be illegal for now but the r35 Vin is legal and technically the only part that is r34 is the shell the floor was cuz out and they layed it on the r35 with some modifications but it was basically a go cart they put a shell on?
On that last note at the end, has FI ever ran deals for steelies and snow tires or have y’all stuck with mainly more sport/summer/regular show aftermarket stuff? Been interested in maybe getting a wheel and tire snow setup for my daily Sentra that has 4X114.3 bolt pattern.
Main reason I started watching Overhauling with Chip Foose even at a young I was like these cars PMR are making is retared af lol and these days everybody just wants to bag the hell out of cars! Like if I ever get a chance to build a tunner! I want to drive the hell out of it while maintaining durability
Flame suit on.Stance boys happened. The moment we stepped away from FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION it all went down hill. The only reason Lowriders get a pass from this is because they are rolling works of art not just pieced together of the shelf parts ruining perfectly good cars.
