Devtips was cool cuz Travis broke stuff down for the laymen and could keep my attention long enough with the way he teaches things. Travis I miss you. When he made the playlist on Jekyll it was so helpful to me. What if you guys built off playlists like that where you incorporate api into a static site. So the jam stack. I feel like we went from 0 to 100 real quick. Where before we were learning sass, Jekyll, jquery. Haven’t really been following the channel since.

Travis Neilson if I were in you I would have made the same choice, MPJ has a beautiful communicative, unique and creative imprint, just like yours. The bottleneck is in two basic points: - MPJ is very knowledgeable about web programming and javascript but little about all the other web design topics, this makes it happen like when you try to mount the wheels of a tractor on a formula one ... does not work; - his friend (MPJ's friend) who was supposed to support him and complete him has very little communication skills, placed next to someone like MPJ, does nothing but highlight the problem. With the benefit of hindsight, perhaps, I would have given up the extraordinary communicative and creative ability of MPJ, in favor of a person much more oriented to the world of web design, especially Junior web desgner. good luck to Dev tips, I hope will return what it was ... sooner or later

So, WHERE are the old dev tips videos? Yes, I found dev tips classics - which had a mere handful of videos - but where are the rest? Have they simply fallen into the memory hole never to be seen again??? If so, that's a terrible terrible shame and such a waste!

Well the channel is labeled tips, so maybe a series of small and easy to digest concepts explained. Would be easier to produce and edit if it's linear and direct. You can also use the guests form FunFunFunction to do a "Dev Tip" on a topic that they are proficient in as well.

To answer the question at the end of the video. I'm 25, fresh out of college working for a large saas company, working in vue and building the frontend of a help desk. I am working on my own products, listening to a lot of start up podcasts and trying to see how other people have succeeded as developers and business owners.

Ok. So here’s my take on what’s lacking. When Travis was around, the channel was something close to Programming Vsauce. He looked like Vsauce and had that curiosity kind of feel to it. You guys have that too, but it lacks the “Vsauce format”. Aka face and information edits. Not the 45 minute long videos on a single subject. The other Vsauce thing that Travis had is the assumption that nobody who was watching knew programming on 2nd year CS degree aka loops and things of such. But your 45 minute videos assume that everyone watching knows programming with beyond logic essentials. I do know beyond essentials myself, but there are few new people coming to the channel because you guys are a rifle, not a shotgun. Run far and accurate in one direction, not run wide but quick to stop in multiple directions. That’s what I have

I love the videos where you are coding together to build an application. It is especially good when it is a playlist spanning several videos as it gives a much more complete picture of the development process. Live streaming this and then cutting into edited youtube videos is the way to go in my opinion.

I am a year into being a Junior React Developer and I am subscribed to both DevTips and FunFunFunction I enjoy both channels, maybe you could make DevTips more big picture (incorporating CSS, Design, Dev, etc. together...how it all fits together) and FFF could be more technical and topical, for example talking about typescript and linters. I think you both do a great job and look forward to seeing which direction you both choose for these channels moving forward. I do also enjoy watching MPJ and David pair program. So the business idea is a good one because it could incorporate pieces of all those big picture ideas when you get to each part (An online business needs design, development, and analytics/SEO)

Anyone know channels like the old DevTips on web design/animation/UI stuff? ✌️ I loved when Travis talked about life and stuff. I loved the video where he showed his early work. I loved when MPJ showed his application to Spotify on FFF. I'm 20yo just about to start at uni (interaction design and software development), no real work experience, for a long time been interested in design, and somewhat recently found out the web is really fun. Sorry to hear your difficulties David, glad to see you back. I think DevTips could be aimed at newer developers. There's a lot of people out there who would love to be at the level that FunfunFunction is aimed at, having been working 1 year in a development role ... but they're not there yet. Perhaps they're considering what their options are for learning development, or they're toying with HTML & CSS and are still afraid of JavaScript. To see content that can help level them up so they can then subscribe to FFF when they've got that far ... kinda kills those 2 birds I think.

I think fun fun function is a more advanced channel, more CS and functional programming style. Devtips was more trends and software development, more beginner-friendly. I just followed dev tips because sometimes Travis had some good tips, I like science not constantly changing tech for doing the same things I did 10 years ago, I was really happy when you took over because I thought maybe you would start applying advanced cs and FP to full projects but then it was all beginner things with new tech. That is my feedback, I don't think anyone agrees. But for me devtips would need to be that, funfun function for projects.

I think Travis was talking to the audience more sharing life experiences rather than posting coding tutorials and live streams I also remember seeing similar stuff on fun fun function channel before but then stopped and focused on live streams and technical videos So it would be nice to make this channel more of a conversational one for entertainment and story type of learning And funfunfunction can be the technical version for tutorials and live streams

I have been a Fun fun function follower for a long time, and was so excited when you guys took over DevTips. Just to echo something you guys mentioned, fun fun function was always a little of a hardcore coding channel and devtips was usually more of visual design and html, css and some js channel for me. One recommendation would be to have interviews with more UI/UX designers along with other programmers, that is a gap I feel right now is not being filled. Looking forward to the next episode and will try and see you guys on twitch

I don't think mixing different programming disciplines will work out. I remember original DevTips as kinda CSS reference. And i think every channel should stick with its core expertiese. I left DevTips when it lost it's focuss on styling stuff. I understand desire to produce this and that to try to catch up as wide auditory as you would like. But none of those channels live long life. You should do one thing and do it well. Go back to CSS. I, as a user, currently am interested (as example) in learning CSS and all it's related tricks. So i want to subscribe to this topic only. And i subscribed to DevTips to learn it. I was not interested in Kubernetes, Docker, web components and what not at that period of time. I wanted to be focused. So... if you want to produce this and that... make separate channels. Make their branding similar, but topics different. One channel dedicated to CSS, other channel dedicated to JS, third to Kubernetes, etc, etc. Personally i do unsubscribe from all channels which start to loose their focus.

Hey, I just got attention to this channel since you run it. So I don't know Travis. One episode I loved was the web scraping and using puppet and think about: "Hey I want to do this, let's figure it out!". You started to read the documentation, tried to scrape the page etc. So starting to think about problems and show how you approach a solution. I am not a developer. I am a IT-Sysadmin and I love to solve problems and it is fun to see your thoughts on problems and how to solve them. Keep your great work on! Chris

Just retired after 20 years of programming. Still curious. How about doing a live stream build using a public github repo and encouraging and evaluating pull requests from subscribers, so you really build collaboratively in real time and see where it goes? That would be amazing to watch and would really show the power of github.

Hi, I'm a front end developer working for a year and a half after doing a boot camp. Something I thought was quite cool in another channel called OmniSlash about Hearthstone. What they did was that they had a bunch of famous and well known players in the community join this channel and have their own series of videos based on a certain theme. Each of those members still have their own channels with their own content, but also contribute towards OmniSlash. This might be a good way of offloading some of the content and spreading it out to a bunch of developers, and also creating a kind of 'team'. You could have series like 'David and MPJ tries...' (exploring a certain technology live and on the fly), or maybe have Isa Silveira explain concepts on Javascript, Dan Abramov having snippets on React, Daniel Shiffman making stuff with p5.js, Jen Simmons on css and so on and so on... Maybe you could be more video focused here with shorter snippets and fun fun function be more stream highlight focused... Anyways, just an idea... hope that helps!

I really enjoyed the projects when you tried out new web tools (next.js, webscrapping with puppeteer, etc.). To me, these videos weren't really tutorials but rather an insight into the mind of devs working with new tools which is more valuable than just watching someone code without any context on what is going on in their mind. It's more of an engineering philosophic demonstration. By watching the learning process was super useful and helpfully demonstrated how easy (or not) the tools are for devs . I know that other channels do this but you guys seem to offer a more realistic approach that is easily applicable to real world projects. Either way, I think that the content you create is great. Looking forward to the next video!

Great to have you both back, your version of DevTips is fantastic, uniquely entertaining and there are others that have already started trying to emulate this way of finding or fumbling your way through issues. What they are missing (so far) is the natural interaction that occurs between you two, it's fun to watch as well as being educational. I like the guest idea, possibly expanding it into a theme for what is going on in the technology or area of the Guests expertise. Dan Abramov, explaining hooks, could transition into what are the big things going on with React, Context, Styled-Components maybe get Dan back to discuss how Context and Hooks combo might affect Redux. There is a gaping hole out there when it comes to good resources for explaining how to implement testing and CI/CD probably because it doesn't affect the look and feel of the app or example but in fact it is a massive need for newbies and it is one of the more difficult things to learn. A series of live streams that maybe take content from a previous React series and refactor it with tests, deploy it on popular platforms e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud. show how plug it into a CI/CD process/pipeline. Deploy it into a CI/CD pipeline and then refactor it highlighting the real life issues that trip up and stop newbies. Bring in Guests who can pull apart what you have done and show how they might do it.

There seems to be a big push for developers to have a strong portfolio when applying for jobs. This is easy when you are starting your career, but is much harder once you get older and have less time to work on the weekends. Many developers work long hours and only have time to work on private code bases which cannot be shared or linked to in their portfolios. It would be great to hear your opinions about this issue, and if you had any tips on how developers in the middle of their careers can highlight their strengths. :D love the show btw.

Stoked about this update. Been following both channels for years. Live streaming is a really good way of having real-time interaction with people, it's amazing. Defo do more of that but do it more frequently I guess? Because, right now with FFF it's only Monday and that's the day when most people have meetings and then try to get some work done (at least myself) and I keep missing it. So it would be good to be multiple days a week, if there are time resources anyway. Also, there was this series from Travis when he was still running the show and that's creating a personal portfolio website from scratch. That's where I learned the basics about putting things together, and that is the go-to series I was giving to people who wanted to get their hands and keyboard greasy with human sweat -- and now it's gone. Is there a chance of bringing it back?

First of all, thanks for the video. You are sharing your thoughts with us, and it is very precious. Now I would like to share my thoughts with you, and you might not like them. Please approach them with a fresh head. I will add that I am a longtime subscriber of fff and I subscribed to DT only after you guys took over. So MPJ, you seem to be going through a difficult time in your life. I know you are still moving to a new city, but I have a feeling there is something else that you choose not to tell us. I wish you good luck with that if I am right. Stay strong. You are awesome. Truly. And I think your troubles are causing the pattern I am noticing lately: the two channels often encounter "bumps in the road". I understand you started streaming more than making RU-vid videos, and as you say, editing them is very dull for you. You often post videos that are just recorded streams with some explaining added. The truth is not all people like streams. I, for one, hated them very much until recently, and now I just struggle to watch them because no one makes anything interesting anymore. Your streams are at least interesting. But that is not the fff I subscribed to, I'm sorry. The fff I subscribed to had awesome content presented in a concise and fun manner, edited with love and precision. I would love to have that again. But now what I see looks like a person I love is beginning to fall sicker and sicker. For now, it's just an irritating cough that's not going away, but who knows. So I understand that you have two main problems: "editing is boring" and "no interesting ideas for new content". I will propose a solution for each. The first one I would solve with simply hiring a person to edit your videos. Just find an undergraduate student that would love to help you for a symbolic percentage of your Patreon income or something like that (that's me two years ago and I'm sure there are a lot of people like that on the FunFunForum). The second one I would solve by changing your target audience. You keep saying it's a one-year-experience junior dev, so why not move to lower middle topics or things like that? I'm sure you'll do just great. DT might fit nicely into that btw. I understand that I might have expressed some thoughts here in an unpleasant way, and if that is true, I am very sorry. I am trying to do what I can to help you make fff great again. And I would also love to see what you'll make of DT. I think a channel you might draw some inspiration frome is CodeBullet. He's cool, he's interesting, he hates himself. Check him out if my comment seems well-grounded to you. Thank you very much for all the awesome content. Without you, I wouldn't be as successful as I am today. I hope to have more fun programming together in the future ❤️

The situation is pretty clear. MJP wants to grow FFF because it's his own. Which makes sense. But the DevTips channel has 333k followers, and it's a shame to not leverage this community/subscriber base. So one way to leverage this channel is to funnel as many people over to FFF as possible. Which makes sense. It's a very modern problem 🙂🖥

We never really had the idea of funneling over the people, nor do we have it now. Not everyone interested in fff is going to be interested in devtips. Funneling people over would make as much sense as coca cola trying to migrate all Fanta drinkers to coke. The question is what the division/identity should be.

@@OfficialDevTips I hear you. And btw I'm not being critical. I was a fan of Travis' videos. And I'm a fan of FFF. DevTips is currently a channel without an identity. But with an enormous audience! Very unusual situation 🙂

I started your content with an MPJ muzing when I was transitioning from infrastructure Ops to DevOps. I'd like to see more content on DevOps tools, specifically content that I can follow along with in my own lab environment. Not sure if others are looking for this kind of content, but that's my vote. Configuration management, cmdb, common languages like Python, Java, etc., Elasticsearch, and so on.

You can make something on databases and firebase. I'm really trying to figure all this out without much improvement. here is what I would like to learn: - form submission in firebase. - making multiple administrative layers (to make employ user accounts and assign them projects requested in form submission and a login system for employes to check their projects.) maybe you can help me with something! :)

The format you brought is really good. like start as an amateur and trying this as person who doesn't know anything about the topic. Like Docker and Kubernetes. It is GREAT!!!!

I'm a lead on a project building a new product with a small team. Team size of 2 but should be 4 by end of year. The product is a year old. My other team member just joined as the second developer at the company. This is my third year working as a developer and I have no experience working in a team of developers

I liked regex episodes. As for idea for episodes. Can you show implementing some logic from lambda function maybe...? And yes I am a designer which uses code to proceed with career, one way or another :)

I stuck around after Travis left. I think Devtips should keep developers in the loop by talking about news regarding web dev such as new ks features libraries etc.

I dont know if anything like this has been sad much, but what i believe what treve was doing is to create content that can help with what i might come across in real life like creating issues that deal with things. Email, menus pazzels adventure, before it got boring 💤 "development tips'' I love what Trevors started with please create some content that drives up coming developers or concepts

Hello, the reason I watched DevTips with Travis was for new CSS stuff and other things like Jade + Sass, etc. It would be great to have some CSS (future of CSS).

What about basics of machine learning & AI. You did one video long a go and it was really great. Isa Silveria was doing a bit of learning in this arena, she can be a good addition here.

Travis made quality content. I miss that a lot. He taught us to do things as well as think like a coder. He was fun. cool and awesome guy. Making videos which are fun will be good.
