What Happened to Eddie Stobart?

A new series with a bit of a different theme.
I will be taking a look at iconic or infamous British companies, locomotives or places that are no longer with us. Today we start with Eddie Stobart. The inspiration for the series came as I was curious myself as to where the company had gone but couldn’t find any videos so I decided to make one.
I hope you enjoy this series and I will continue to make it if the support is there.
As lorries are not usually my area I don’t have any pictures so I would like to declare I do not own the copyright for any of these pictures, but am using them under ‘fair use’ for education purposes only.
I hope you enjoy!
Thanks for watching!

I remember my trainer talking about Stobart when I did my National and International CPC back in the mid 90’s. I seem to recall him having his “O” licence taken away on several occasions because of the way he ran his fleet operations. Clearly he was “influencing” someone in the right way as he seemed to bounce back each time!

Their demise was a result of how they expanded so fast by getting work by low ball bidding to force the competition into liquidation. Large fleets like Yardelys of Leeds and Browns of Carsile were east to undercut, their management was old and complacent and when the next generation took over as in Yardely's case they didn't have the hungry killer instinct of Eddie S.

I’m not saying this was the case here but sometimes Class 1 LGV have to be in the ‘wrong’ lane at the approach to a roundabout or T junction in order for the trailer to be able to negotiate the corner without mounting kerbs or obliterating something. A fact that many car only drivers fail to understand.

I recently did my Class 2 licence and there was a lady doing her Class 2 as well and it turned out that she is the niece of Andrew Tinkler and she explained that although the name and brand colours still exist, the main reason why the Culina group ended up buying Stobart's was because they wanted their contracts with companies and the fleet was a nice addon to the deal. She also mentioned that the Stobart family do have a trucking firm still though, they are called WS transport.

I used to play a game for two players while driving on the motorways- Eddies and Norberts. Each participant chose the trucks they would look out for, either Eddie Stobart or Norbert Dentressangle. The first to reach ten won the game and then you started again. However, if either player spotted a Preston's of Potto truck, that trumped everything and was a game winner.

This is not the full story, I have worked in the transport industry for the last 50 years and experienced the effect stobbart had on other hauliers , stobbart by various devious operations caused the closure of many other hauliers, both company's and owner drivers , the stobbart drivers were shunned by drivers from other company's, in greasy spoons while eating , if a stobbart clown came and sat next to other drivers , they would all get up and find other tables , their dodgy operations should have bankrupted them , but they owed to much for that to happen , so they were allowed to carry on , undercutting honest hauliers , and driving them out of business, ...........here's a good one about stobbart , ......" what's green , and hangs from a @unt , .........an Eddie stobbart tie "

Now you know why all the lorrys are resigtered in Belguim. This was a story that was told loads of time when drivers where on the P&O ferry eating in the drivers food court. Also back then Stobarts would only imploy X Army! As they said they where better drivers. HMMMMM a driver that has only followered a orange flashing light when on the roads also never had to put the lorry in reverse with a trailer. i know this first hand, as i worked for a couier company when i gave up drving in Europe, When a agency driver came to the depot, i woulg ask what they have done and so on. then i ask them to park a trailer onto a bay, 15 mins later they where still trying to park the trailer, i then asked where you in the army? they said yes, so i parked it onto the bay, Many times when i had agency staff for drivers, if they where in the Army before, then it was hard work as they had not had real life driving a lorry where you had to think what to do and not just follow the orange lights of the convoy jeeps. Dont get me wrong everyone had to start somewhere :)

@@michaelwalker1145 I doubt Culina will go the way of Stobart. They’re a German company wholly owned by the dairy conglomerate Müller that is renowned for efficiency. Transport companies that have been acquired by Culina have remained intact operationally although they’ve been rebranded in Culina livery with the old operator name at the base of the unit cab doors. This enables them to be sold off more easily at a future date if necessary. Trailers are slowly being rebranded with the original operator name on the side in the Culina typeface and Culina on the rear doors/shutters. It will take years to rebrand/replace all of the original Stobart trailers as there were literally thousands of them although there are now very few Stobart units around in original livery. There are quite a few of the rebranded Culina typeface ‘Stobart’ trailers out there now although i suspect what you saw was an original Stobart trailer being pulled by a yet to be rebranded Stobart unit - a sight that is becoming rarer by the day. I did dock security for many years, and Stobart drivers were very often cocky and arrogant - some were just bloody rude. One hated to be told where he had to go, and his catchphrase was: "I know where to go, Hitler." What a charmer.

I think Harry Hill caused the demise of the tv series. As for all the comments saying Stobarts got what they deserved need to remember they were bought out as opposed gone banktrupt, that's a massive difference.

I've always worked in road haulage and i believe that Stobart as been disliked over the years by other hauling companies and inpart responsible for small haulers go to the wall unable to complete,he seemed to flood the market with vehicles and undercut anyone who stood in his way,it was well known that loads coming out of England when reach Carlisle they would deliver for free products going on into Scotland, there are many great haulers apart from Stobart like Nights of Old,Jack Richards and many more, after Eddie past away the strict rules fell away, gone were the white shirt and tie which was a stupid idea anyway, after all truck drivers are not meant to look like coach drivers,Stobart will exist but not the way club members remember it.

Such a shame for this iconic haulage company to go. I always thought it was so wealthy nothing could stop it growing & being ever popular by it's megga fans. But, i am sad to hear that this company is no longer in existance. Certainly not the way we loved their drivers for being so sociable to their fans at truckfests & when they get a spare moment to get their pic taken with a happy fan. They always tried to be very obliging to a fan as much as they could. Some of the drivers seemed a bit more popular than others. But, that is the way it was But, all was popular in their own way it just depend on the fan. Once again i am deeply sorry to hear that this HUGE ICONIC!!!! company is no longer more. I thought it went bust , huge debt , liquidation or some other reason. But, i honestly thought that is impossible. . But, like many thousands of others we are so very sorry to hear E. Stobart haulage is no longer no more certainly not the way we loved it. 😂😮😯😟😟😟😟

That's all that Stobart drivers were good for, soaking up the perceived "glory" at truckfests and shows and waving at their "adoring "fans as they drove by. Total tossers the entire lot of them. Ask any of them to tie a dolly and they'd stand there scratching their empty heads.

Totally agree with you. And the culina driver's aint much better.... Their TV program that they had was total comedy... The outfit completely undercut the transport rates and the smaller haulage companies didn't stand a chance in competing with Sobarts.... That was the best news I heard when I heard they got bought out.... They got too big too quickly and it serves the idiots right..... Karma's a bitch aint it.?
