A short documentary on the extraordinary life of the late actor and musician Gary Holton.
A gifted individual who made the most of his short life.
Note: Their has always been confusion about his birth date... either 1952 or 1953 so I went with what his father stated.

I was student working at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End in 1984 when Gary was appearing in Pump Boys and Dinettes with Lyndsey de Paul and Paul Rogers. He was the only cast member who was in touch with reality. He had time for the sparkies, front of house, cleaners - no ego, no 'look at me'. He invited a few of us to a party in the basement of a restaurant in Maida Vale after a show - just a really open, honest and decent human being who I was lucky to have shared some time with. You can live for 90 years and not really touch another life in any meaningful way. He had his battles with drink and drugs and died far too soon - but he left a mark on many who met him and is remembered with warmth and respect here at least. As Bill Hicks says....it's only a ride, and Gary had a short and beautiful one.

Beautiful words Simon. I had a friend who used to see Gary in local pubs in and around maida vale back in the 80s. Everyone who met him said he was such a lovely bloke, so down to earth and decent. I wish I'd met him but I always felt I did. He's the only celebrity death who's loss I mourned so much.

i had a musician boyfriend in 80/81 who was good mates with him, i met him many times then.. he'd often show up to various gigs, and was a really lovely guy, but even then he was one of those people who seemed to just not to know when to stop, i remember being so sad hearing he'd died, especially after the show had seemed a great opportunuity for him, but not suprised...i hope he found peace.

no he didnt have a single bit of talent in his whole body.. could not sing at all....... he got breaks due to the parts needing a slimey little cockney character, exactly what he was. shame he ever got a break because a tiny biit of fame went to his head and the drugs started to flow. what he didnt realise was most other fellas bragging about how much coke and herion they were doing was actually fiction... he did go clean for a little while then got fame in auf and boom came the dope again and it killed him.... it was clever for the film makers putting him into certain parts that needed someone exactly like him.. he didnt act at all . thats exactly what he was realy like in real life, little cockney geezer.. .... there was another absolutely useless actor who got fantastic accolades even a osca, but could not realy act and was exactly the same in every role he played and off screen the same too....... he got praise for a film his old lady was also cast in, it was the best fuck up of his career when they cast him as marc anthony in anthony and cleopatra.. to me i cannot see how you can possibly have marc anthony (supposed t obe a roman solder ) with a strong welsh accent !!!! yes richard burton..... every single part he ever played his voice dont change a single bit............broad sword to danny boy ... see you dont have to have talent to get on in the film game.. ive come across plenty who cant act to save their life yet got extrememly famous....

Thank you for putting this up. So much here I didn't know. He saw a band I was in play the Clarendon in Hammersmith, in the early/mid '80s. It was around the time of Auf Wiedersehen, and he came and chatted backstage. I was a bit starstruck, but he was really supportive. Years later I met people who had been told by Gary that they should check my band out. A truly terrible waste.

Auf Wiedersehen Pet, best programme ever for me! Such a brilliant cast that gelled together perfectly, Gary and Pat Roach, R.I.P,,,

thankyou for posting this , i thought not many people remember that bright shining star that was gary holton , i loved him in awp and have them on dvd still watch them now, wayne and oz were by far the best characters in it , recently bought casino steele best of album i just love his voice brilliant , i understand acting was his passion above music , i which he would have stayed clear of the drugs . god bless you gary you will never truly die unless your forgotten and i will never forget you rip .

Lovely video about him thank you! I did not know all this history about him, like everyone else on here i was shocked/gutted when it was announced he had died and as others have said he was the best character by far on AWP never was quite the same without him! :-( RIP GH!

Talented guy in more ways than one, the crew was devastated and part of the reason a third series AWP was'nt made a few years later until 2001

I was at school with him, not in the same class but in the school brass band. If anybody out there was at the Beaufoy in the 60s. He used get up to all sorts of things and had a reputation as a bit of a rebel even then.

I was at Beaufoy too in the late 60s - can't say I remember him at the time. But with Gary Holton being in a year above and Gary Willmot (West end entertainer ) being in a year behind me it shows the school knew how to produce musical talent. The man behind both was Mr Stumbles the music teacher. Looking back it was a great school if you wanted to express yourself.

I'm a recovering drug addict of 15 years tried to detox nearly died in May this year will be 2 years clean every day tho temptation all round Gary H had money fame but ultimately that's what got him I remember the news when he died very very sad his little boy growing up with something like that Phil Lynott died 3 month later in Jan 86 funny enough I was really into Lizzie at the time so 2 tragedies 3 months apart seems like another life time I'm 52 now still struggle but clean you have to take one day at a time it's a cliche but you can't plan anything just one slip and you're down again Gary Holton was a great guy one of the boys and he's been missed that's a fact didn't know AC/DC wanted him tho bloody hell he must've been good cheers folks sorry for the gloom David

I've been watching the re runs of Auf Wiedersehen Pet and Gary playing Wayne was my favourite character. He was witty, rarely lost his temper, was a hit with the ladies and always looked cool.

He used to drink in the Warwick Arms on Regents canal. I saw him there a few times. I was shadowing him in lifestyle but luckily I never get into needles and stopped drinking in 1986 after 2 drink drive bans in one week back in 1985.

Saw him with HMK when they supported Alice Cooper at Wembley 1975. He was a superb frontman with such energy and they absolutely smashed it that night .The first HMK album is a feast of ballsy Brit rock that I never tire of playing. Grossly underrated in the history of music.
