Christopher Nolan is one of the great filmmakers of our time. Even if you’re not a full-on Nolan fanboy or girl, you have to admit his brand of mixing mind-bending narratives with a genuine reverence for the craft always yields compelling results: Be it historical drama (Dunkirk, and the recent Oppenheimer), suspenseful mystery (The Prestige, Following) or colossal action-thriller (Dark Knight trilogy, Tenet), the man knows how to deliver a picture that gets the adrenaline and the brain working, and that’s a rare feat indeed nowadays.
But it all had to start somewhere, and while we’re not exactly going back to the very beginning, we’re going to highlight the movie that introduced Chris Nolan to the world and kickstarted his incredibly successful career. Don’t quite recall which movie we’re talking about? Don’t worry, we made a note of it - in fact, we’ve got plenty of notes scribbled down about it somewhere - so try your best to remember everything we’re going to tell you about just WTF Happened to “Memento!”

I concur. It’s, in my opinion, Chris’s best movie. His brother wrote the short story the film is based on. Talented family.

I love Momento...but it has one plothole that you must ignore to enjoy it: If the main character can no longer make new memories after his accident, then why does he REMEMBER that he will FORGET? O_o

Maybe it’s the Sammy Jenkis reference he has tattooed on his hand? Either way, he’s a high functioning human being despite the extremely debilitating condition he lives with, which stretches the boundaries of realism. To hell with it though, I freaking love this movie (it’s in my top 3 of all time). Guy Pearce is a revelation!

@@kyokusanagi616 Well it can't be the Sammy Jenkins tattoo, because he doesn't actually remember who Sammy was. He tells the story that Sammy couldn't remember, but in reality Sammy was just a conman. It was HE who couldn't remember and ended up killing his own wife because of it. So l just find it odd that he doesn't remember that huge detail, but he still remembers to tell everyone and their mother that he's going to forget.

Isn’t everything you’ve said just an interpretation of what happened (the film plays with audiences in that regard which played a large part in it acquiring cult status). I guess Teddy’s story probably had the most truth to it - he thinks Lennie is going to forget it again anyways, but I still didn’t 100% believe it. The movie also alludes to memory not even being a reliable source of evidence as they can be warped over time into something more favourable. I think Sammy Jenkis is real as he remembers him passionately. However, I think those memories have eroded over time in to something that fits Lennies narrative.

@@kyokusanagi616 True, Teddy is a liar for sure, but it would serve no purpose for him to lie at that moment, since Lenny would forget everything he said anyway. Plus there was the photo of Lenny smiling covered in blood, and Teddy said that's when he killed the real John G. Even if we were to doubt that, Teddy said that Lenny lies to himself to create a puzzle he could never solve. And what do we see Lenny do at the very end? Lie to himself in order to forget everything Teddy said, and hunt him as the next John G. So it's more believable than not that what Teddy said is true, and perhaps Lenny's condition is both physical....AND mental.

What I love most about the film is that when I showed it to my wife she LOVED it. She hates movies that go back and forth between past and present, because she gets so confused. But she enjoyed the hell out of Memento. Nolan is a genius, full stop.

One of my favourite Christopher Nolan films. I love the unconventional way the film is constructed, as well as learning details alongside the protagonist.

Leonard is the ultimate unreliable narrator. Not only do other people take advantage of him for their own ends, but he takes advantage himself. He distorts facts, takes out or truncates pages of the police report, and lies to himself. At the end of the day, Leonard becomes a serial killer with the perfect alibi: he has Anterograde Amnesia. He cannot remember all the crimes he committed. I believe he’ll continue to operate in that town or another but will eventually get caught. Teddy was covering his tracks but since Lenny killed him, the police will eventually catch up to him. There’s no way he could continue to operate like he’s been doing long term without someone helping him. Most likely he’ll end up back in a state hospital or institution.

The one that Kick-started it all, this 2nd Movie 🍿 is still Nolan's greatest movie ever made. It has a lot of twists and turns aswell as the ingenious plot device of being shot in reverse (and switching from colour to black and White). One of the extras on the initial DVD was the movie told in order, except it doesn't make as much sense as it does when told reverse.

Memento was such an excellent movie. Still one of my favorites of all time. And Chris Nolan never fails to deliver a film that is well worth watching, even if it has flaws that you can pick at, and that is a level of consistency that has earned my trust in him as one of the finest filmmakers of our time.

If you get your hands on the Special Edition DVD there is a hidden feature where you can play the movie in chronologic order and it's amazing! It's like watching a totally different film, but with all the same shots and dialogue. Highly recommend this.

This movie is not told backwards. Only _half_ of the film is told backwards, the color half. The black-and-white half is told forwards, and they meet just before the end. I guess it's a testament to how thoroughly the movie messes up the viewers' heads that hardly anyone seems to be aware of this odd timeline structure.

Watching this film as a teenager it left an impact on me. The way the story is told, the characters, and the cinematography are truly outstanding. Nolan as a director is extremely talented.

Love this film. Saw it when it came out and it blew me away. Having had amnesia and suffer from short term memory loss from a head injury, the scene where Guy Pearce is trying to hold onto a memory while Carrie Anne Moss is distracting him is so spot on. That feeling of feeling a memory slip through your fingers is frightening.

Talk about a close call. Imagine if Miramax, still ran by the Weinsteins, picked up Memento. The way Harvey Weinstein always hijacked a movie from its director and chop it up to “make it mainstream”…Nolan dodged a bullet so good call on the producer turning them down.

I thought this film was stupid. It did not give me any impression that Nolan would be a good director. The fact is, and I know this is unpopular with Nolanstans, but the film was boring and confusing and when the solution comes it was kind of underwhelming. A better writer should have been hired.

We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Our sins will land us in hell. Thankfully God has did something so we don't have to go to hell. He sent his son Jesus Christ to die on the cross to pay the penalty of our sins. We broke the law, Jesus paid the fine. He rose from the dead, defeating death. We just need to repent of our sins and put our trust in him as our Lord and Savior to recieve eternal life. Jesus is the only way.
