Make sure you put structure in the trough! The bass and crappie will be a lot less stressed with places to hide and will acclimate better/ start to feed way faster - they won’t do to well in a completely empty environment. I’d recommend some cinder blocks or artificial wood that they could hide behind

If you want to avoid trash coming in, planting trees will be a great thing as they provide windbreaks, cast shadows that will keep the pond cooler and help reduce evaporation, plus the fish will have a place to cool down

To manage the water level better, you could have the contractor dig some shallow ditches towards your pond so that when it rains it fills up your pond from a larger area. Or put down some of them drainage pipes (with holes) in the field around the pond. That way you dont have the stuff from the surface going into the pond but the water still gets directed there.

There’s a special polymer you can put in the pond that slowly expand in water. It will plug the leaks easily but you’d need to remove the fish first.

For the leak look at BamaBass video when his dam leaked, he put in a fish safe compound that fixes the leaks. I hope that mega giant green sunfish is still in your pond that was there when you bought the house.

Hey man I say just do what needs to be done to get the best fix available. If that means draining the pond then it sucks but it’s better to do it the right way then to have future problems.

Hey John! One piece of advice would be to place some cover for the fish. Blocks or fake plants help them to feel more comfortable 👍

I’d probably not cut the grass around the pond, or cut just the bare minimum so you can access the pond. This is mainly to limit fertilizer runoff & promote habitat for insects and other species that can benefit the pond habitat.

Build a wind net like the ones at the driving ranges around your pond it’ll prevent things from getting in

Hey Jon...bit late to the party I know. Great to see that your pond has some life in it still! Couple of thoughts on how you can stop your pond from filling with neighbourhood trash? You could do with building a bank or berm around the perimeter of your pond and do some planting. You need some bushes at ground level on the outer edge of the bank/berm and some trees on the top of the bank/berm with more bushes between them. This sort of planting would not only help catch anything that will be blowing along at ground level but it will also help catch stuff that may get airborne and end up landing in your pond. It would also provide you with some level of shelter also when you're fishing, either form the wind or the rain. It won't cut it out completely, but then you don't want that for some of your bait presentation. It will also give native wildlife such as birds and insects somewhere to shelter and breed too. You're looking to increase the biodiversity as much as possible. Also think about planting the edge of your pond, not only will it give insects a place to breed (thereby introducing another food source for edge shoaling fish) but the roots put down will also help with stopping bank erosion and collapse into your pond. Keep the update vids coming, it'll be great to see the progress made to bring it back to life.

Some shrubs or tree structure around the pond helps with losing water in times of drought and heaps of heat, it also helps strengthen the overall edges of the pond/dam. An offside effect is it also leads to more animal diversity, like frogs, insects and birds, which overall leads to better water and biodiversity which helps the fish. (thats how I did it for me yabby dam anyway) My mate also drilled a water bore near his one and just uses a generator from the bore to slam water into it to aerate it every couple of months.

They do sell a powder that you dispense throughout you pond that will sink and help fill holes and leaks

fish can live in the wildest places you can look at like a 6in creek and if it holds enough water in TX itll have fish, actually lived in a neighborhood when i was younger and there was a pond that was forgotten about for who knows how long probably 5 years it wasnt a community pond just an old stock tank ig we had corn and wheat fields around us one day i went fishing in the pond and caught a catfish it wasnt big maybe 6in but there were fish in it

Get with bama bass and see what he put in his big 5 acre pond. It’s a two part solution that bonds together swells up and seals any leaks you have and don’t have to drain any water. Sealed up his dam leak he had

Add some milk crates or something to the pool. The fish will chill out quicker if they have places to hide

I use to live in the panhandle of texas and yes the wind is horrible always lol

there is a compound that you can put in the water that bama bass used in their pond that seals Leaks my be you should look into that.

Attach a sponge filter to the air line in the bait tank. Remove any dead ones you find as it will cause the others to die as well. Some simple structure in the big tub would do well. Just a few cinderblocks and fake plants etc. Make sure any wood you put in it has already had the tannins leached out of it or your tub water will turn brown. Natural wood that you find will leach tannis, sometimes for years.

Make sure to get structure soon though, itll make the fish happier and make the pond look 10x better

you need to put some kind of structure even if it's a small rock in that indoor pool pond, it will help distress the bass, and a sense of security and orientation.

Watch bamabass' lake videos, he had a leak in his, and all he had to do was add this powder looking stuff that expands and "fills" the microscopic spots where the water was seeping through. He didn't have to drain any water to do that.

Polymers same stuff the use in baby diapers you can get by the bag find your more moist areas around pond edges and spread a bunch of Polymers in that area should solve problem if no moist edadges dump threw out pond not harmful to fish

You could build a fence around your pond to help catch all the trash! Or build a boujee rock wall around it.
