*Correction when it comes to Thandie Newton she is the only Black British Actress to have won an acting BAFTA
Had to get this off my chest, because the constant undervaluing of Black actresses is just exhausting.

I already had one foot out the door when Katrina basically took over, but I loved Abbie so I stuck with it, even as the writing declined. "She's one of the main two leads," I would tell myself, "I'm sure she'll get a better storyline/episodes sooner or later!" I kept lying to myself that it's just a creative dip in quality, and will pick up soon. Then they killed her off and I rage quit right there and then. I loathed how they treated her, and how they treated Nicole. She deserved way better than that mess.

@@happychaosofthenorth I got sick of Season 3 less than halfway through. I did not like Betsy Ross at all. Funny thing is I legit thought she thought she was too good for (network) television, and for that show, and to be honest I would have agreed with her. I actually thought nobody fires the lead of a TV show, because "it's not like I'm watching it now that she's gone." I assumed the higher ups must know that. It's amazing how much credit that assumption naturally gives these clowns. I guess I thought on some level that capitalists only see green. Cynical egalitarianism, what a notion. They couldn't even look past her skin tone to see the dollars trailing behind her. Nobody involved in that production should have assumed it was okay to continue without her.

@futurestoryteller

Didn't seem to me like WB had a lot of black shows. All I really remember them airing were the shows on Kids WB on weekends, Buffy, Dawson's Creek, and 7th Heaven. Other than Static Shock that seems like the whitest network that I can possibly imagine. Plus, I don't know if you mean that the individual shows would get cut once _their_ (ratings?) numbers were up, but if you mean the networks as a whole, overall viewership has been trending down, due mostly to on demand viewing (including piracy.) It's also kind of disturbing that Fox would cultivate black viewers in the first place, considering their "News" model. But I guess it's kind of like how people call the lottery a tax on the poor. I'm afraid to by paper cups for fear the Koch's will get my money.

futurestoryteller the Steve Harvey show, Girls friends, Sister Sister, ever body hates cris and the game. Yes some of the shows started on other networks but then move to the CW(WB). Also at the height of their rating the were moved to Friday night or the networks will start moving black shows around to lower their view ship. For example Blacklightning had it’s best views on Tuesday after the flash now it is on Monday nights and the viewership dropped. This is how networks KILL shows. Not just black shows. But more often than not this is the treatment some successful black shows get.
@futurestoryteller
@futurestoryteller 4 года назад
@@daynaclemons8626 I almost asked you if Sister Sister was on that network, I used to watch that show. I did also watch some episodes of the Steve Harvey show. (I watched a lot of shows. Still do, actually.) But I assumed most black sitcoms I saw aired on UPN. Although when you started listing them I specifically remembered the Jamie Foxx show. I've got to say, while the Friday Night Death Slot is a fairly ubiquitously understood American staple, I don't know how you personally interpret the inherent contradiction of greenlighting a show, watching it succeed, and then killing it off capriciously, but it doesn't seem like a financially viable use of resources; to continually start production on shows, just to cancel them presumably for malicious reasons that _should_ logically coincide with a refusal to start production on them in the first place. After all, if a white supremacist doesn't want black people in his home, I don't think his strategy is to invite them to a party, and then kick them out as soon as they're a delight to the other guests. Then again I may just be playing devil's advocate here, as I'm not oblivious to how deep seated racism often is. Nobody has to be a card carrying member of the Klan for a bunch of executives, sitting around a table, being asked to cut one show from their line up that is arguably successful, (for some underlying reason) to believe that nine times out of ten they'll pick "that one black show" under the misconception that it naturally appeals to a narrow demographic. Regardless of its actual performance numbers. I think Black Lightning is a really weird show in ways I find difficult to articulate, it also happens to be the only one of those CW superhero shows that I genuninely found interesting last year. And I think the casting, the caliber of the actors, particularly the ones playing young teenagers, to be among the best CW has ever done, which is admittedly not a high bar to clear in most cases, but I think they're genuinely exceptional. So if someone asked me why I thought the network was (seemingly) thinking of cancelling Black Lightning, I'd say that it was probably for the same reason that it has the fewest episodes per season as any other CW DC show besides Legends. Which is probably the same reason they seemed reluctant to include them in the multiverse to begin with. I think this happens a lot with female led shows too. People don't put much faith in them and they suffer in ways that aren't necessary. I always thought that Supergirl had particularly awful CGI and fight choreography, even after accounting for it's old school 22 ep model, and the natural strain that has on the FX budget. I think Melissa Benoist is genuinely amazing too, as an actress and even she seems like she's phoning it in half-dead from boredom most episodes. Anyway, I am sorry for rambling at you, I have insomnia. I'm actually very tired.

@@futurestoryteller Sorry but TLDR, but networks do it. For one reason or another networks kill popular shows. A famous example is Young Justice. The show wasnt deemed successful because a large part of the viewership were girls, and WB execs didnt want girls watching their superhero shows because "girls dont buy toys". So much goes on behind the scenes you cant just say a show is successful so why would execs kill it. What if it doesnt present the "image" they want for their station. Study ways studios have killed properties and youll find a whole host of reasons why but it happens and has always happened and there is a historic trend of young up and coming stations building viewership with black shows and dropping whole lineups in favor of more marketable white shows

The initial success and then the "controlled demise" of this show is an important example of the power of systemic racism in real time. The racist entertainment industry has always used creative black people as human fuel/batteries no different than when we were in slavery and built the country. For decades Hollywood has hid behind the lie that it ALWAYS comes down to money and nothing more. But the willfull meanspirited destruction of this show and racist treatment of the black performers EXPOSED systemic bias trumps even money/success.

I found Sleepy Hollow surprisingly great. Then saw it go to pieces. I am white. Did they think I could not enjoy a show with POC's as co star and in supporting roles? Wrong. Katrina was the weakest spot in season 1. Was the actress weak or just unable to handle an incoherently written part? She should have Gone to the Light at the end of season 1. Then the main cast could have continued their adventures, with possible additions of new characters. Instead, the roles of the POC's were minimized to give more time to lame white characters. I was unaware of the specific mistreatment of Ms Beharie that you detail. But I missed the episode where Abbie died. Getting spoiled to that fact, I did not watch that episode or any in the last season. The show started so well. What a shame that it was destroyed.

I wouldn't say they did it to prop him up, that's just the dumb excuse they tacked on to the narrative after they fired her to make it seem like it had a narrative justification. Not that this is substantially better, I'm saying they genuinely make it seem like it was intended to be a fitting and dramatic end for her character. What's astronomically idiotic about this "graceful exit" is that even if you were to fall for it hook, line, and sinker; any resonably competent storyteller can tell you that the end of the protagonists' story is an end to the *story.* You have to give people who have invested a reason to keep watching. With that ending they kept insisting "This is Ichabod Crane, you knew before you watched this, he is *the* main character of Sleepy Hollow." And I was like "I... don' think so..."

Withouth her the show lost all appeal for me, because she clearly was the heart and soul of that story (and an awesome, kick-ass lady too). I had no idea about the behind the scenes shit, but I am outraged how Nicole Beharie was treated. It's abhorent. The other situations you described as well. 2. You are the best thing about my YT experience recently. Your content is so informative and thoughtful and the way you bring passion and knowledge to every topic you touch is absolute joy to watch. Seeing your subscriber count grow makes me squee every time, because this means more and more people recognize your awesomness. 3. Whenever I think about how Abby's character was done dirty by the writers, I can't help but thibk about Bonnie - another character with whom I empathized the most out of the entire cast, who was also screwed by the writing. I still can't get over the Damon/Bonnie thing. He didn't deserve her, that's for sure, but they had terrific chemistry and for me it seemed like Damon could actually grow as a person and dwvelop as a character in a relationship with Bonnie, while he was completely stuck in relationship with Elena.

The showrunners had no idea where they were going after season 1. Nicole Beharie was Sleepy Hollow and they whizzed it down their leg. Her character was so much more important than Ichabod's in terms of bringing the show forward. He was the old guard, she was the new. Storywise, the torch should have passed to her and Ichabod's role should have lessened as he finished his business and no longer needed to be displaced in the world. Cliche, perhaps, but the Obi-wan to Nicole Beharie's Luke Skywalker. Also, it's been years, but as I recall...all of the Katrina storylines were far more cliche and less interesting than the Abby / Ichabod dynamic.

OMG, how did I miss your video, four years ago? I was in the mosh pit of the imdb forums when this all went down, I am going to back track and watch the earlier one and then watch this video and comment further. x

I didn’t know this happened to Nichole. I stopped watching sleepy hollow after Abby was killed off. Then I watched Black mirror and I saw her on episode and that was first time I saw Nichole since sleepy hollow.

I was so excited about this show. I was living in Sleepy Hollow, NY when it came out. We all laughed about how much Spanish moss there was, but we loved it. As soon as they introduced Katrina I started to become bored with the show. It wasn't the actress' fault. I just liked the dynamic between Abby and Ichabod. When Katrina became a significant part of the story there was much less of the thing I liked. I never made it as far as Abby being killed. I didn't know what was going on behind the scene. Disappointing, but not surprising. Over and freaking over again.

Ok to elaborate, I was enamoured with SH since the trailer when you saw N's beautiful face turn up in it and I went "OMG, it is a genre show with a black female lead" I was there for it. I used to be pretty regular on the IMDb boards and was part of the fandom on it, mostly black women but quite a few other people too....and then came Katrina and then some of the white women became very vocal about how 'canon' Katrina was and how she just looked 'right' next to Ichabod in a way Abbie didn't. It became VERY hostile because the SHOWRUNNER was pushing Katrina SO hard and we didn't understand it because Katrina was a poor actress, why was he pushing so hard? Anyway, as you said, everyone could see NB getting sidelined, it was offensive and to top it all off with her purpose being in life was to serve Ichabod, that was the last damn scene I watched and I know the majority of the fandom checked out at that point then, I never saw the last series and have no idea how it ended.

This makes no sense. Bahari, Thandie Newton, Orlando Jones all got hosed. He had his best acting of his career as Anansi aka Mr. Nancy. He stole EVERY single scene. Ironically all the issues his character talked about was also true on the set of American Gods. Shameful.

That used to be one of my favorite shows until they killed her off. I'm a huge fan of Nicole Beharie and especially when i seen her in that movie American Violet, she's a great actress. They did the same thing to Taraji p Henson, they killed her off the show Person of interest, even though she was co lead. And she said she was miserable and not creatively satisfied. Meaning they wasn't treating her right too.

I was so disappointed with the shift in storyline. It seemed to me they were building to a deeper relationship between Mison and Beharies' characters. I suppose the powers that be weren't having it. A strong black female lead had the suits shook. Look what American Gods did to Orlando Jones, arguably the best character on that show.

I spent the entire first season of the show waiting for Katrina to stop being around so Abbie and Ichabod could get together, but then, not only was she brought back to life, but she was getting so much focus while being the most useless character, despite being a witch. I was was trying so hard not to hate her, for female solidarity and it wasn't her fault the writers wanted to make her a damsel in distress, but they were really trying to force me to care about this chick, and the writing in general was getting ridiculous, so I fell off. Glad I did, and didn't have to experience heartbreak.
