Rainbow in their 1977 lineup, in my opinion is one of the greatest 70s bands ever. Especially their life shows were just unbelievable, just look at the Munich 1977 footage. They had everything. A charismatic, theatrical singer with a massive voice and great lyric themes, a maestro of a guitar player, the fitting contrast keyboardist with a huge classical background in David Stone and a unbelievably rhythm section with Bob Daisley and Cozy Powell
I saw the Elves before they went on tour with Ritchie Blackmore, I was living in their hometown of Cortland, NY at the time. I sincerely doubt Ronnie Dio was dissatisfied with his bandmates' performance on the first album, these guys were his friends. Pretty sure that replacing the Elf band was something Dio reluctantly went along with-Blackmore was his ticket to the big time, and Ronnie would have been in no position to stop Dio from doing the whole band over.
Short form - Richie went back for the Deep Purple reunion and disbanded Rainbow. Left them disbanded when he started Blackmore's Knight after quitting Deep Purple the last time. Reformed Rainbow a few years ago and interleaves tours with them and Blackmore's Knight tours.
Trust me, Ritchie fired him. He didn't say to him, "You're fired." What he basically did is not show up the next l p. It was just Roger Glover Don Airy, and nobody else showed up. That's Ritchie's way of saying you're out the door cause he was already looking for a new lead singer. So Graham was fired. He's said he quit because he left on his own, but he really was fired. Joe was already in the works. Ritchie's biggest problem was Grahms' short hair. Believe it or not.
@@Fuxerz I think you're right on several points. It's true that Blackmore just wasn't turning up to rehearsals. I think that was a period of inactivity and disillusionment. There seemed to be a lack of ideas. Even Don Airey was unhappy and almost left. Bonnet claims he had invitations to return. I'm not a huge fan of Turner but he certainly delivered on the songwriting front. A great shame that Bonnett left - I thought his voice was perfect for rainbow. I thought he was the best of all.
@user-up2xt5zs1g it was mutual, lol but Graham was a great fit. I saw all versions of Rainbow and deep purple. Except mk4. I thought Grahams look was cool and different in that error. His voice is magnificent. Power and tone. Cheers 🍻
A couple of corrections, first Graham Bonnet wasn't given the boot from being drunk at castle donnington he actually started recording difficult to cure singing I surrender but quit due to no original song ideas and since Cozy Powell left after the monsters of rock show and being good friends with him, he chose to leave. Also, I surrender wasn't the highest charting single it was the song stone cold,
Saw them from about 7th row on Ritchie Blackmore's side of the stage and post-Dio era in Sacramento with Turner. It seemed that Ritchie might have been playing to an audio track as he would turn around during any of the fast licks.
I can't stand these people who do these videos for the history of a band and totally gaffe on the facts. Bonnet was not dumped after Donninton. He was fantastic at Donninton! Graham left during the early stages of working on Difficult To Cure because he just didn't think it was going well.
He was fired even though he said he quit. Blackmore basically wasn't showing up or recordings which pretty much meant you're out the door. Blackmore didn't like him because of a short hair that's the whole truth of it.@@walterevans2118
I'll give you a little history. I started my band - Red Dawn in 1989, I was just a kid. We played out a few times and so our band was listed in the East Coast Rocker newspaper. At that time David Rosenthal lived 20 miles south of me and actually stole my band's name and put out an album which was a total flop. It was like pop rock. So I go to put the band back together and I see there's this album out there by "Red Dawn" in 1992. Because the music was so bad he could only a record deal in Japan, then later a small indie label in the UK despite having so many connections in the music business. Again, I was just a kid, I have to get everything registered, trademarked, copyright, patent to start my project in 1989? I write songs like Savatage, Saxon, Scorpions, Priest, Dokken, Whitesnake and he comes out with this crap - completely destroyed the brand. Make up your own band name, don't steal mine.
You could easily get a different name. If the music was that good you'd still succeed. But you didn't. There's a message in there, dude. Try and move on yeah
@@garymitchell5899 You missed the whole point completely. It's not about "not moving on" or "getting a different name", dude. I've already done all that. You can't tell me that the music wasn't any good. The first time we played was open mic night and we set up a date and the club owner was going to have us headline. People would come up to us after the shows and tell us how they liked the songs - that I wrote. We were actually building up a fan base. If I'm that bad then why does so many people steal from me? Whether it's my songs, my guitar playing and apparently, my band's name as well. I must be doing something right. For now, I've stopped posting new content until the album is completed. Now I know you have no experience managing a band. I do. Dealing with flakey members is no easy task. And honestly I'm glad I didn't get signed because the record companies would've screwed us over and I'd be in it for millions of dollars. That's whole other conversation. Regardless, who would steal from a kid? You don't see me doing that. Maybe my values are different than yours because you don't seem to mind.
@@WeGachaMetal I remember they were located in my hometown - Montclair NJ. I went there once, the girl I talked to had a rolodex of names/bands/numbers and she added mine. Great paper, I miss those days.
@@NealVioMy friend you're funny David is a juliard graduate of music. He's playing gigs with everybody now from bruce to billy joel. You gotta be kidding me. David is, a world-class musician. Every idiot knows you gotta go get a copywriter for your bands name. Did you do your own publishing like I did so you don't get ripped off. There's a lot you need to learn about the music industry my friend. Own your own publishing trademark, your name. Things like that so you don't get ripped off again. Join ASCAP so you get royalties. Jez bro do your research please. You sound bitter and Jealous of David.
Long Live RnR was decent. Blackmore is a nut job. He is better off making Halloween records with his wife and wearing silly hats. He is a loon. Steve Morse can play big time and kept Purple sounding good, while Ritchie carved pumpkins.
Without Richie in the Mark II lineup, Deep Purple crashed and burned. Steve is NOT the guitarist Richie was, and a lot less original while being even MORE flamboyant and "over the top" as a player. His ONLY grace is he could get along with the other band members.
Steve can smoke Blackmore. His technique is miles above what young Ritichie was. I have seen both with DP. Morse is closer to Jeff Beck wired phase. Ritchie wears dumb hats and carves pumpkins with his wife.@@bricefleckenstein9666
@Cal-ge8vl Technically I think Steve is a better guitarist technician. But when you put the whole thing together, he can't match Blackmore. Blackmore is a mount rushmore guitarist, my friend. You gotta be serious here. Steve never really fit. It sounds like he's playing with chicken foot or Government Mule. Steve a great guitarist just not a good fit.
I agree. But Ritchie caused so much trouble that I was happy to have Steve. Blackmore IS an original. I like Rainbow too but not his halloween wife pumpkin contest music. ha ha ha. DP in 85 was killer. That is when I saw them, Cow Palace San Franciiso. I also saw Whitesnake with Lord and Paice in it with Tull headlining. Ready and Willing. Great set. 3/5 DP! @@Fuxerz
Richie Blackmore couldn't make up his mind if he wanted to be a rock star or a classical composer. If they would have stayed together with Dio they could've done something great like a concept of the Lord of the rings but the pop attitude won over and Dio said fuck that horseshit later
Well in the end you have to pay the bills. Blackmore was paying out of his pocket and said enough is enough so he went commercial. If RJD was paying out of his pocket he might have done the same.
@@trebleface7835 Dio paid all the bills also with his own. Band he also chose to play rock star in the end before he went back with Tony and Terry and Vinny
Lot wrong in this . . . Dio left/ was fired from Rainbow BEFORE he met Iommi for the Sabbath gig . . . It was Blackmore's decision to hire & fire, not Dio's . . .RISING was not Dio at the height on his powers. . . . Bonnet was not fired for being drunk at the Castle Donnington festival . . . .in short, sloppy.
I was fortunate enough to see Rainbow with Graham Bonnet, and I still think it was the best lineup. Then again, I preferred Sammy Hagar over David Lee Roth.
Two albums are worth continual listening here - Rainbow Rising (well, side two) and On Stage. Everything other album had maybe 1-2 songs worth listening to every so often but that's all. Blackmore's Night was a real breath of fresh air, I wish they had toured in the US.
Disillusioned? Nonsense. If the enormous ego of Blackmore wasn't appeased with a Gillian substitute, he just figured his own name should be first and foremost. He never planned on Dio being better than he is.
I'm joking @@lukewarmwater5320. Everything this guy does is a turd of epic proportions, and every one of his postings has a comment like yours on it. Yet he keeps on making more of these ...
I'm not a keyboard warrior either I've critiqued people's "creations" and looked them dead in the eye many times in the past and said straight out "This is dogshit, why are you doing this?" @@stuartbayens4495
You forgot the line 3 up mark clarke yes Americans were soft cry babies stargazer and gates of Babylon were the first heavy metal songs and Dio is number one 1 for certain a lot of people country soft disco at the time were so jealous of Dio voice and his God Devilish style but across the seas they loved rainbow with Dio I didn't go with John Travolta and that stuff I stuck with my father Ronnie James Dio and marlin monroe for ever amen
"Soft crybabies'? When you say Dio is number one for certain then you're saying Americans eclipsed everyone else. And "Marlin" Monroe is completely funny. ROTFL
The name "Rainbow" actually came from the rainbow over the stage at 1974's California Jam which was headlined by Deep Purple. Blackmore said in an interview that he was trying to re-create how it felt for him being on stage at this gig. Where you got the story about some cafe is beyond me.
It's the Rainbow Bar and Grill - a VERY famous spot in Blackmore legend and definitely played its part in the name (how could you not know that?). Physically having it on stage obviously came from the Cali jam. A couple of things wrong here, but not that one.
@@MrLtia1234 Of course I knew about it - but I also knew it had nothing to do with Blackmore's naming of his band. I think you are getting mixed up or have been misinformed.
@@rosiemason-rk4cmThe name Rainbow comes from the famous Rainbow Bar&Grill where Richie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio met to discuss recording an album together because Richie was impressed with Dios voice in the band Elf that toured with Deep Purple. The Rainbow 🌈 on stage at the California Jam was David Coverdales idea as he wanted to establish his own identity in Purple.
