The Secret Wars toy line is a beloved collection of action figures that holds a special place in the history of both Marvel Comics and the toy industry. Here's an overview of the Secret Wars toy line:
Origins and Background
Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars was a 12-issue comic book limited series published by Marvel Comics from 1984 to 1985. Written by Jim Shooter and illustrated by Mike Zeck and Bob Layton, the series was a major crossover event featuring many of Marvel's most popular heroes and villains. The storyline involved a cosmic entity known as the Beyonder, who transported these characters to a distant planet called Battleworld to engage in an epic battle between good and evil.
Partnership with Mattel
The Secret Wars toy line was produced by Mattel, one of the largest toy manufacturers in the world. The collaboration between Marvel and Mattel was driven by the comic book series' potential to promote a new line of action figures. At the time, Kenner's successful Star Wars action figures had set a high standard in the industry, and Mattel sought to create a competitive product using Marvel's characters.
The Action Figures
Released in 1984, the Secret Wars toy line featured 3.75-inch action figures, a size that was highly popular due to the Star Wars figures. The initial wave included:
Heroes: Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Doctor Octopus.
Villains: Doctor Doom, Magneto, Kang the Conqueror, and others.
Each figure came with a secret shield that could hold interchangeable lenticular images, known as "Secret Shields." These images would change when tilted, depicting various scenes and characters.
The Secret Wars figures were also released in international markets with some variations. For instance, in Europe, figures were produced by the company Gulliver, and some characters were released that were not available in the U.S., such as Iceman and Constrictor.
Legacy and Impact
The Secret Wars toy line is remembered fondly by collectors and fans. It marked an important moment in the history of action figures, demonstrating the potential of comic book properties in the toy market. While the line was relatively short-lived, lasting only until 1985, it laid the groundwork for future superhero action figure lines and is often cited as an inspiration for later Marvel toy series.
Collectability
Today, Secret Wars action figures are highly sought after by collectors. Mint-condition figures, especially those with their original packaging and accessories, can fetch significant prices in the collectors' market. The toy line's nostalgic appeal and connection to a landmark comic book event make it a cherished part of many collections.

Looking at your collection Super Powers was better. I loved the Super Powers cartoon on Saturday mornings but I never had or collected the toys. It was Hot Wheels and Star Wars until 82 when ARAH hit the pegs. Since my dad was in the service and I grew up on military bases it was all G.I. Joes until I got a skateboard. Now as an adult collector it’s still Hot Wheels, Black Series instead of vintage, and Action Force replaced classified as my main military line. Sorry for the long answer but I love these history stories about toys and just sharing my history toy collecting story. Lol. Thanks for doing these, please keep doing them, and have a good day sir.

I actually only had a couple of the superpowers figures as a kid, but I had five or six of the secret wars figures. Maybe they aren’t better, but they sure have a strong place in my memories! Once again, great video.💚💚

I am not sure you have read Secret Wars. For the record, it was written to promote the toy line, not the other way around. Dr. Doom is based on how he appears in the comic in the finale. What is really strange is that a bunch of the figures aren't even in the story. Zemo, Electro, Iceman, Daredevil, Falcon, Constrictor and Hobgoblin were not in the comics.

The problem with the Marvel Legends 3.75" 5 points of articulation figures is the lack of vehicles, play sets, and diorama sets. It it's only an action figure then bigger is better because of shelf presence. 3.75" figures are too small by themselves.

Counter--- If I can fit 50 3.75" figures on a shelf or 30 6" on shelf? 50 is shelf presence.

I've heard that Mattel viewed Secret Wars as a budget line to complement Masters of the Universe. Same basic proportion as MOTU but smaller scale, fewer unique accessories, etc. I think that says a lot about their attitude towards this line in comparison to Kenner's approach to Super Powers.

I know I must be in the minority here, but I always got annoyed when toylines excluded the female characters. It bugged me how hard it was to find Janine, from Ghostbusters or April O'Neil from TMNT. When I was in the first grade, my brother and I got a ton of Toy Biz X-Men for Christmas. We did not get Rogue, Storm, Jean or any of the women who appeared in the show. So, a few months later, when my birthday rolled around, and I was asked what I wanted and I just said "One of the girl X-Men." I got Rogue. I played with Rogue exclusively for a week afterwards. I was so psyched to have an X-Man that wasn't a dude. That original Toy Biz Rogue from the 90s is still one of my favorite figures.

I collected both Mattels's Secret Wars and Kenner's Super Powers action figures. I have find memories of my mom taking me to Kmart & Sears to pick up 1 SW & 1 SP figure every weekend. I remember being kind of disappointed with the lack of quality on the Secret Wars figures and being very impressed with the detail Kenner put into the Super Powers line. Great video! Please do more! 👏🏻

I agree with nearly everything you say here. As much as the Kenner Super Powers line gets criticized for the figures being gimmicky, Mattel's Marvel Secret Wars is absolutely baffling how it got executed. As you well put it, why in the world would they include these lenticular things that had absolutely no play value, and yet some figures didn't get accessories most essential to them, like Captain America missing his iconic shield (but Wolverine got his claws and Daredevil his billy club)? Capeless Magneto and Dr. Doom are just unforgivable.

Secret Wars were some of my first action figures. Cap, Iron Man, Dr. Doom, and Daredevil. I still have them, but they are a product of my customizing experimentation. Doom is accurate to how he looks in the Secret Wars comics. Hobgoblin, Falcon, Daredevil and Zemo were not even in the comic series, but still have figures. Strange when they still had so many other figures they could have made from the comic. There were also no female characters in Secret Wars while Super Powers gave us Wonder Woman.

I understand where Bobby coming from in hindsight but at the time Marvel was not the power house till the 90s cartoons. DC had Batman 66' , Superman 78', the new adventures of Batman and Super Friends that fueled that line by Kenner. Where Marvel had Hulk live action tv and spiderman and his amazing friends cartoon. No big films like superman and failed shows like spiderman 77' live action. Mattel went off the comics which sold well but Marvel did not have superfriends style show to Market to kids so they probably didn't want to spend a lot of money in tooling for characters they don't know will sell. As much as we love comics we know that a tv or movie will boost popularity of the property.

Actually, it's called a temporary license. It gave Mettel a certain amount of time and I don't have a clue how much time Mettel had, but if the time limit ran out the license would either go back to the license holder that being Marvel, or the license holder would extend the time limit. And seeing how Secret Wars failed, I don't think Marvel decided to extend that temporary license. The same thing happened to Playmates and Universal Animated Studios's Exosquad and Playmates and Landmark Entertainment Group's Skeleton Warriors. Basically, Playmates didn't own Exosquad or Skeleton Warriors and when the real rights holders decided to end their respective franchises they also didn't renew them as well.

So, a bunch of comments... I thought Secret Wars guys at time were funner to have fights with than Super Powers even with their limited articulation then action poses of their arms and legs made them fun to fight with. I LOVED the Tower of Doom also it was always the bad guys headquarters. I loved Dooms rifle and pistol fitting into his his side holster and back spot. I wanted Hobgoblin so bad, but never got him and Doc Ock. I had Kang, but never knew enough about him to make cool stories with him. I loved Spider-Man and Wolverine. Falcon was also super fun with his wings. Great memories and yes Super Powers were mostly better... but the Secret Wars guys were durable and good for fighting. The Super Powers guys looked better and their actions were more fun and I loved the characters more... (big Green Lantern fan). thanks for the nostalgia... defintely jealous of your collection. OH one more thing.... the Secret Wars comic was FARRRRR superior to the Super Powers 3 limited series runs.

I remember this line well. Doom is how he appeared at the end of the Secret Wars comic, advanced armor an no cape so that was why. I seem to remember the figure appeared before he appeared that way in the comic though. As a kid the shields were fun the first time you saw them but got old very quickly. I have a memory of an interview with Jim starlin saying the toy line was an afterthought by marvel and Mattel and it was rushed. I want to say it was in wizard or toy fare magazine but I might be remembering it wrong. I’ll try to track it down as I think it’s one of the few issues I still have.

The lenticular shields were a huge miss and a boring play feature. Couple that with lack of basic accessories like a regular shield for Cap and capes for Magneto and Doom and I found the line to be very lackluster. I think they just didn't know anything about the characters, and thought they would compete with Kenner by making a super hero line on the cheap. They might've had the lenticular stuff already designed for something else and just stuck it in as a selling gimmick. They probably just didn't get that super heroes don't need those bizarre things to sell - just the right sort of accessories. Whenever I look at the line I just think 'Where is Hulk?' He was an A-lister at the time. We got Kang, but we didn't get Hulk. We got Zemo, Hobgoblin, Iceman, Falcon and Electro, but we didn't get Hulk.

The Clash line flopped. Maybe Mattel had that in mind when they approached Secret Wars. They were determined not to lose money on the line. Anyway, despite all the shortcomings, I prefer Secret Wars over Super Powers. The SW figures look edible. There is something fun and lovable about out them. I once owned a complete carded set of SW, including the international figures. I never owned more than a handful of Super Powers. I found them boring. They had no weirdness, no uncanniness, no individual aesthetic. They simply were exactly what they were. I found them anti-fascinating.

Just a few thoughts....the story of Mattel's market research said boys liked Secret and Wars the best, so that old Secret Wars commercial had Doc. Doom blowing up a building in the shield, and Spidey's like how do we stop him and Cap said that's our Secret, Spider-Man or something. I think Mattel literally went with "Secret Wars", with the shields being some kind of super hero Morse code or spider sense, Shooter's definition of the words were that they fight on a faraway planet maybe? Either way, there seemed to be a disconnect between Mattel and Marvel, similar to the disconnect between Kenner and DC/ Superfriends cartoon. At least that garder belt on Doc Doom's leg had a slot to hold anyone's laser gun, right?😂

I have a question about how figures are developed when they’re based off movies and games. Do the companies give the 3D renders to the toy companies, or do they just give them concept arts and images? I love seeing your perspective on these toys/lines even if I don't always agree with your opinions. Why didn't Hasbro want to do Secret Wars 2.0? It seems like it would be a slam dunk. My kids would love that.

Holograms were hot at the time, so toy designers thought. The Visionaries, Supernaturally, eve. Transformers. Kids were into it for about 5 seconds, but not enough to be the gimmick. It worked for Transformers because it was such a small part of the play.

The whole time I’ve been focused on the John Matrix figure you have on the display case…lol…I can only say that the XMen and Marvel Superheroes line made up for the Secret Wars shortfalls. They must have had non-fans make the Secret Wars line. There were no cartoons like Superfriends to market as well. I know they had the old Spider-Man cartoons and the X-men one offs, but if you weren’t a comic book nerd back then you wouldn’t even have known some of the characters in the Secret Wars line…

Daredevil was pretty popular when these came one, I remember all the kids were talking about Daredevil comics at this time, I think the Elektra storyline was going on , I would say more popular than Iron man, Black Spiderman was also very popular

Carbon Scoring posted a Secret Wars vid today that combined his SW comic and figure reviews series into a 1 hour 42 minute supercut. He recreates the comic covers of every book with Marvel Legends versions of each figure in the line. This includes the three international figures. He said his Electro was carded and that he opened it, so his is mint. He wished he would have made an unboxing vid since opening a 30 year old vintage figure would have gotten him some views.

I think Mattel was simply using the same time and money saving ideas that they learned from MOTU, but to a more higher extreme.

I was an early teen when these lines came out and yes that Secret Wars line was is a lazy line, even your Hobgoblin won't stop leaning against that back wall and stand straight up.

The Secret Wars comic was a response to the Crisis on Infinite Earths maxi-series that Marvel managed to pull just ahead of DC as they heard of it through the grapevine. Infamously, Jim Shooter was asked to add a nose on Iron Man in the comics because there was one on the Secret Wars toy. For the next few years, you can see a bump on Iron Man's face mask in the comics.

From what I understand, Marvel wen to Mattel, who dictated the process, including the idea of Secret Wars" choosing the name based on a marketing decisio, using the event to sell toys vs. Super Powers whcich did sell a comic but it was not an epic deal vs Crisis. It's pretty obvious that Mattel put almost no effort into this ine

given they were making masters of the universe at the same time as this line, it always surrpised me they didnt just use the stuff from that line to make secret wars figures...i bet it would have sold way better.

You hit all the points of what these figures were lacking. (Also as someone else commented the paint would rub off fairly easily). I had a few of them back in they day. One note is that Dr. Doom matches his new look on the Secret Wars 11 cover, that's why he didn't have the cape. I wonder though which came first - the comic design with no cape, or if someone said they weren't going to have capes in the toy line and that determined his look in the comic? I always thought Doom looks way better with his cape and torso clothes vs the bare streamlined look. He feels less menacing with his sleeker silhouette and form.

Maybe Mattel was too heavily influenced by their Masters of the Universe line of actin figures. The Marvel Comics characters already had established looks. Mattel had created Masters of the Universe and had nothing to compare it with so the design choices were easier.

There were only about 20 heroes and a dozen or so villains in the Secret Wars storyline. It kept faithful to the comic in the first wave, although it featured a Kang who was killed off in the first third of the comics. It would've had a bit longer run, I feel, if it had kept up and got the FF, the rest of the X-Men, Hulk, the other Avengers...in addition to Molecule Man, Absorbing Man, Ultron...it was such a missed opportunity to give us the characters we wanted. They definitely were a diet version of Super Powers. Even the Tower of Doom, while cool, was shoehorned in at the last minute in the comics.

@@Valaverse id personally would like to know more about process , ideas , design, info why certain choices where made . I see a lot of collectors just tend to be Baching a line or a figure but we don't get context on what and why it's done, like limiting budget So the budget goes to one figure and limits the rest, or when repaints are necessary to reuse molds. When is it politic, when is it due to license issues etc. At least that's what I'd be interested .
