Does Sergei Polunin still dance classical ballet? What happened to Sergei after "Dancer"? Did Sergei QUIT ballet? In answer to these frequently-asked questions and mistaken assumptions about Sergei Polunin, this montage includes highlights and a very brief summary of Sergei's ballet career from 2016 to late 2021.
**
This video shows only a fraction of Sergei's very active dance life since 2016. (It will soon be missing the highlight of a very productive year - Polunin Ink's classical ballet performance of "Romeo & Juliet" scheduled for December 1st at the Royal Albert Hall starring Sergei Polunin and Alina Cojocaru. Tickets for Sergei's appearances are regularly sold-out, and this appearance is no exception.)
Sergei still frequently performs Sacre, (1:21) and Rasputin (1:50 ). Both were performed several times in 2021 and more performances are scheduled internationally for 2022. He has also added Bolero (2:22 and 2:27) to his traveling repertoire. (The full performance is available as a gorgeous art video on his RU-vid channel.)
While video footage is scarce, contrary to common misconceptions, although Sergei is no longer a full-time artist with any other theatre companies, he has never stopped performing classical ballet. Besides producing three of his own full length ballets - Rasputin, Romeo & Juliet, and Little Red and the Wolf (all featured in this video) - as recently as late 2019 he also performed as a guest artist at the Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) in Germany in classical ballets including Raymonda (1:46) Spartacus, and Coppelia. (Keep in mind that theaters around the world were closed during most of 2020 and late into 2021, so opportunities to dance with large theatre companies have been virtually non-existent for everyone.)
He has also performed solos at numerous fashion shows, world leader forums, charity galas, awards ceremonies, and national celebrations. And while to date none have been as popular as "Take Me to Church", he has appeared in at least half a dozen music videos which have gained millions of views online. He continues his modeling career and regularly appears in magazines and video advertisements. He also continues to pursue acting opportunities and has appeared in five feature-films.
He continues to give back to ballet as the director of the Choreographic school in Sevastopol and sponsors the education of young dancers. He continues to be passionate about speaking out about the problems with the current ballet system and seeks to find ways to improve the working conditions and opportunities of ballet dancers around the world. His ballet company, Polunin Ink, continues to blaze new trails in ballet by creating artistic collaborations between artists of many fields, including fashion and design, and gives dancers from all over the world opportunities to explore their own creative visions outside the structures of the ballet theatre system.

Brilliant cut! When you see these snippets, you become even more in awe of his incredible ability. I wanted to say talent, but talent alone isn't what makes him so special. It's the soul and passion he brings into everything he does - whilst being such a humble person - this is what makes him stand out the most.

I’m so glad I’ve managed to highlight his dance in a way that really shows him in a spectacular light. There was so much good video to choose from it was challenging to know what would best give that “wow” effect and also be a broad selection of his skills. Definitely Sergei is so much more than talent. As someone who previously rarely watched ballet I was - and still am - astonished by videos of Baryshnikov. But even he wasn’t enough to draw me into actively seeking out more. The minute I finished watching the first video I ever saw of Sergei I HAD to see more. It’s that indescribable something of himself he brings, the soul and passion and an emotional resonance I’ve never experienced so strongly in an artist before…. And the more I saw of not only his dance but his personality, including his beautiful humility and generosity of heart, the more I loved him and wanted to see more. He’s such a treasure and it’s a delight to share with others who see all this in him too. 😊❤️✨

I can imagine why he became disillusioned by the traditional ballet system. He went to London, as a boy, speaking no English, training first at the junior Royal Ballet school, at White Lodge. He then graduated from the Senior School and began his career with the Royal Ballet quickly becoming a Principal - their new shining star. I think I am right in saying that he never saw his family again, until he was in his 20's. That is a heavy load to carry for a young person; isolated from everything he knew for so many years. I don't think he was well nurtured there; far more attention should have been given on the pastural side - instead of which the pressures on performances became intense. (Coincidently, several other dancers left around that time.) I feel so very sad that he left London, it was such a great loss for us. I think the Royal Ballet, partly because of his experience; is now very good and happy place, attracting exceptional dancers from around the world. Dancers now, can take breaks to guest star in other companies abroad, which can only be of benefit to them. I do hope he will return to London, I would love to see him dance here again.

Yes, there was a lot about Sergei’s mentoring (or lack thereof) that had a negative impact on his adolescence and young adulthood and it’s taken him a long time to work through some of those issues, I think. But he has such a giving and resilient heart about it all. He does seem to have effected a lot of changes in the ballet world and works hard to continue to improve the ballet system for students and other dancers as much as possible, hoping to keep others from having to experience the same neglect and limitations he and other dancers have experienced. He has a very gracious and generous heart and it’s especially seen in the work he does to support young ballet students through his foundation and masterclasses and the vision he’s had for the children at the Sevastopol Academy. ❤️

You’d be surprised… this past week alone I encountered comments from at least two or three different people who thought he had quit dancing. And I don’t even read many comments sections these days. Mostly only my own videos and in fan pages. One of them was someone on his actual Facebook fan page who was commenting how it was a shame he quit so soon. 😮 So, as strange at it seems (I know I find it confusing myself- how someone who likes his dancing could be unaware he never stopped…🤔) there are apparently a lot of people who have no idea he still dances… 😉

I have been a ballet fan for years. Sergei is a brilliant dancer, but he is an acquired taste. With all of his experimentation and moving around I feel he lacks a sense of coherent dancing. I know not a popular opinion.
@IndiaInk
@IndiaInk 2 года назад
Whether it’s a popular opinion or not it’s yours and you’re welcome to express it. Sergei really enjoys collaborating with different artists and choreographers and trying new things so, while I was immediately drawn to him, I can definitely see why some people would find him an acquired taste or opt to avoid his work for something more predictable.
