Only a select few get the chance to explore the mysteries of outer space - but tragedy and loss are universal. After the crew of the Columbia met a shocking fate in early 2003, the brave men and women above the doomed shuttle were put to rest as heartbreak swept the nation.

As of 2024 there as YET to be another shuttle tragedy? Well, Duh. Shuttles were retired in 2011.

I caught that, too. Of course they're no new shuttle catastrophes as of this year - like "duh."

I think the point of what they were trying to say that could have been worded better was that there were no more catastrophes up till program’s retirement in 2011.

Nasa management failed both shuttle missions.

My dad worked for a NASA contractor for 40 years. He always said that the heat shields were designed poorly and NASA refused to take into account all the near misses they had before. Ice damage, foam insulation flying off and doing damage, as soon as Challenger happened he called it, same with Challenger. He was proud when he got to help build the ISS. When the Russians joined, my dad said, “Christ, NO! Everything they build catches on fire!!”. He was right. The Russians had a fire aboard the ISS. This is how he explained NASA to me: the people that actually BUILD the stuff always express caution, the higher ups always want to go full throttle. Every time I see the ISS pass, I think of my dad. Miss you, Dad. ❤

The shuttle wouldn't have touched down in Texas. It was heading to Cape Kennedy in Florida.

This is what happens when you cut corners and go with the cheapest bid on contractors for inspection and construction

Nope at the time of the accident 80% of the shuttle was recovered. You could not touch the material as it was toxic when it hit the ground. At the time of columbias accident nasa and the f.b.i issued a statement warning of criminal charges if pieces of the shuttle were taken and not returned to nasa or sold on the internet. So i doubt anybody would keep any parts of the shuttle through fear of being charged by nasa and the f.b.i!

I remember the sonic boom from when it flew over Dallas. There won't be another shuttle disaster. They are museum pieces now.

It would be awesome if you fact checked your info before you posted these video's, the shuttle didn't explode, it essentially disintegrated/broke up on reentry, which was ALL over the news subsequent to the event, considering we live in the internet age, where it would take no more than 10 seconds to access literally everything you need to know about the Columbia disaster I have absolutely no idea how you confused the shuttle exploding when it actually broke apart/disintegrated..

Traveling at 25 times the speed of sound at 400,000 feet, what was left of the astronauts? Not much but DNA and a few bone fragments.

Recovery said they found all 7 bodies. I assume in various very burned up/skeletal conditions.

I think these astronauts actually boarded a top secret spacecraft and are the first people being sent to Mars.
