Sequel? Prequel? Spinoff? The Book of Boba Fett is a hard show to figure out, but I give it my best shot in my full spoiler review of the first season.

My problem with the show was that it could have taken the Space Western of Star Wars and crossed it with a Mob Drama. A Man Called Horse mashed up with The Godfather. But there doesn't seem to be any commitment to concept. Din Djarin could have made an appearance and not have it turn into Mandalorian Season 2.5. This should have been Boba's and Fennec's stories. If they didn't want to focus on the underworld or the people of the Outer Rim, then why make this show?

They were engrossed in telling the story they wanted to tell and focused less on fan's expectations on BF. They ruined BF (which I think is still recoverable maybe he can change) and injected their vision of Star Wars which hurt the show. I'm still in for the ride bcuz of how good Filoni/Favreau's vision of Star Wars is.

This season actually reminded me of why I stopped reading Marvel and DC comics. I'd get invested in a story, in a specific arc, but once, maybe twice a year it would get completely derailed by making the series part of some big company-wide crossover event.

It felt like The Book of Boba Fett should've been a two-parter within a season of The Mandalorian. Just narratively all over the place. Setting up the Pike Syndicate to be this big bad but apparently all you needed was a Rancor and Fennec being an assassin (i.e. herself) to take out this sinister organisation that's been running this illegal spice trade for many years. It's absolutely baffling how many plotholes there were and how quick things were resolved without any explanation. Also, what's happened with Robert Rodriguez and shootouts? He used to be awesome and clever with those sequences (see Desperado and Once upon a time in Mexico), but all the episodes he's directed and has had action in them have been so poor and boring!

This was the same thought I had watching this. There was no reason to be its own series, should’ve just been a story arc in Mandalorian season 3. The story would’ve been better off and a lot of fat could’ve been trimmed.
@roguechevelle

Actually I think that was a great idea to have "The Book of Boba Fett" be a two part episode arc within the Mandalorian Season 3 show. The first episode of Mando3 could have been this shows Episode 5 then episodes two and three be "The Book of Boba Fett" Part 1 and Part 2. That and have the episodes be a more linear format and not flashbacks. Personally, I had no issue with the flashbacks for the show in fact I liked them more then the current events but when you look at the season as a whole it didn't really payoff for me using that structure. I was hoping to see the female tusken that trained Boba show up at some point still alive to tie back to his past with them but it didn't happen. And I totally agree with the Rodriguez thing, his episodes were my least favorite of the show. The last episode was his best episode and far better then his previous but I still didn't like his episodes compared to all other episodes. Episode 2 was one of my favorites focusing on Boba & episodes 5 and 6 were some of the best episodes in star wars television. I agree that the focus was a little all over the place, I really wanted more of a focus on Cad Bane with the showdown and less about the robots & mods. I think it would be interesting to get more lore mentioned or discussed on his past with Boba. I know many who watched clone wars & other shows had all that deep backstory but for anyone who hadn't watched those shows they needed just a bit more to up the emotional stakes of these two facing off.

I also think that narratively, re-introducing Grogu and his choice would have more weight if they had left it hanging and not produced an answer until Mando season 3. They realized they had some weakness in Boba Fett's story, and tried to glaze some of it over with an, "awwww" moment. And the whole Mando story suffers for it.

When I first saw that Boba was getting a show I hoped that each episode would be an adventure from Boba's life. So, the framing device would be Boba is sitting on Jabba's throne like Conan the Barbarian and telling stories from his past. Each episode we would see him collecting bounties as a younger man. Interacting with the empire, flying Slave I around Star Destroyers. Battling other bounty hunters like Cad Bane or Bossk. That would have been so much cooler than what we got.

Just for fun, I think the show would've benefitted from this timeline. Boba Escapes Sarlacc Boba loses armor Tuskens take him and train him (with a four years later reference to know how long it's been since Return of the Jedi) Train action sequence to prove his new found worth and way of doing things Tuskens are lost to the "biker gang" and now Boba has a new outlook Boba saves Shand, steals Slave 1, and gets revenge on biker gang/looks for armor Brief callback to Mando season 2 getting his armor back (this gives us a better idea of the timeline during Mando season 2) Boba takes Jabba's palace Boba finally heals in Bacta so we don't have to see the tank again (no flashback) Boba starts demanding respect from town etc. Boba rarely takes off helmet to be more intimidating. Deals with the Hutt's and gets the Rancor. Boba hires the mods (maybe the speeder bikes aren't so colorful and out of place) Boba visits the Sanctuary Boom. Rest of the show stays mostly the same. Great story, just the early parts needed some help pacing.

The show would have benefited a lot if they had done a better job of portraying the passage of time. Boba was supposed to be with the Tuskens for 4-5 years but they made it seem like it was only a few weeks or months. Boba wore the same thing for most of the flashbacks and that Tusken kid didn't grow. Same thing with Mando and Grogu. They made it seem like Mando just gave Grogu to Luke like a week ago. And Luke only trained Grogu for what? A day? That really undercuts the emotional farewell between Mando and Grogu. It also makes Luke's choice to Grogu meaningless. Grogu was with Mando for months and he's been with Luke for a few days, of course he'll choose Mando.

@afrobuddy4801

Honestly, I am not sure why we need a kenobi series. Kenobi was keeping a really low profile after the fall of the republic, he can't have been doing something that impactful or noticeable. Also using his lightsaber would be a no no since jedi were being hunted and he was probably the second most wanted jedi after yoda
@animatedink2529
@animatedink2529 2 года назад
I'm just gonna say it, Kenobi has no business of being a mini series or even existing. We don't need it. Even if the show provides quality entertainment, it's still going to be bad for the overall narrative of Star Wars. Obi Wan and Vader shouldn't meet before A New Hope. And apparently they're going to be fighting twice. WTF? Also, if they have Obi Wan leave Tatooine, then he's failing as Luke's protector, and if they have him stay on Tatooine, then there's only so much they can do with him other than maybe having the stories all be flashbacks.

I heard someone compare this to Iron Man 2 and I thought that was right on the money. The actors are good and there's some good moments and concepts, but they are so distracted with what else is happening elsewhere in the universe that they don't concentrate on the story they should be telling. As a result the narrative turns into a muddled mess. Lots of great moments here, but they lack focus and are dragged down by missed opportunities.

I'm still not sure what the purpose was structuring with the flashback narrative. You could tell the story from Boba escaping the Sarlaac pit to his time with the Tuskens chronologically and not much would change. The moments of flashing back didn't serve much narrative purpose to what was happening presently.

I mostly agree with your review. I was really interested in the political maneuverings and motivation backstory for Boba taking control of crime on Mos Espa. Then the Mando episode happens and we take a huge detour from the main plot. When we eventually come back to it all the interesting political manipulation disappears in favor of a battle where everyone is fighting separately. Boba Fett never takes revenge on the syndicate leader for ordering the death of his adopted Tusken family. In the end they eat space fruit and laugh together with no thought for the innocent civilians killed who might have been saved if Fett had just brutally killed the first wave of syndicate to arrive in Mos Espa. Basically it's a standard Disney show where it teases interesting ideas in the first half, then turns into a big fight in the last half where some things don't make sense and no one learns anything or grows in any way.

I think what happened here was there was drama behind the scenes with Pedro Pascal and Lucasfilm so the Mando S2 finale was made to give them options going forward if he didn't come back, and Bobba Fett was greenlit at a time that was uncertain, and then Pascal came back so they wrote him into Bobba Fett's final episodes. I'm one of the many who checked out after the first episode then came back for ep5. Then ep6. I gave up on this series after three episodes or so. The episode where the power ranger moped team has a chase. I had to stop there. They used an actor way too old for Boba Fett. They immediately removed all mystery and intrigue around the character by showing his face a lot. The anti-hero "I will rule with respect" schtick fell flat in a big way. It made him seem totally toothless and passive, so not only did he look like a grandpa he acted like a kindly old grandpa too. This show had big "get off my lawn!" energy, like it could have been called Boba Fett's Neighborhood. It's like the creators, directors and writers all wanted to make sure there wasn't a single really bad guy around. Like they wanted to make sure every single person in the show was someone who you could be friends with. It really made the show seem completely sterile, safe, non-antagonistic. It didn't have any edge nor take any chances at all. It was like being served up a heaping plate of plain mashed potatoes. It had no flavor, no spice. This show should have been a revenge story, of this bounty hunter crawling out of hell and then undertaking a merciless, highly personal quest to eliminate and overcome various criminal underworld figures on the path to taking Jabba's seat. We could have gotten two seasons of development re: Star Wars criminal underworld, how it works, and how Boba Fett painstakingly pursues and overthrows it. The scene of him sitting on the throne to rule in Jabba the Hutt's stead should have been the final scene of the series.

Here is my lunch break synopsis fix for the series: Boba is in the sarlacc for most of the first ep. He struggles to escape, his armor is corroding and his suit is torn. He has flashbacks to his previous life as a child, his fathers death, revenge, regrets and his final moments before his fall. He sees many other lifeforms in the belly of the sarlacc, old and fresh. He resigns to his fate and stops struggling against the sarlacc and is transported down to where his jetpack is. He connects to his pack and activates his flamethrower. The sarlacc releases its grip and he jets out firing his flamethrower down at the grasping tentacles, buring out his jetpack in the process and falling unconsious to the sands. The series proceeds as written. Jawas steal his armor, tuskens enslave him. Boba saves the tusken child from the monster and is accepted by the tribe in a fashion. He does duties, training, he starts off a cold and serious, he begins to lighten up and connecting with the tribe, but still planning his escape from the tuskens. He is presented with a chance to leave, but chooses not to. He realises he has a new calling, a family. He smiles for the first time in years and feel like a new man. He goes through with the rites and so on. Years pass. The syndicate slowly begin to push into the tusken territory. They drive the synicate spice smugglers away by cunning and force. Boba showing them to ride swoops, like a bantha or whatever. The tuskens show him ambush techniqes like hiding under the sand and such. They defeat the syndicate trespassers using these means. By now he is a new man. Everyone is happy. Cut to present day story. We don’t know why he is suddenly alone and searching for his armor. He meets up with Fennec who is an android, because the stupid mods don’t exist. He fixes her in exchange for assistance in reclaiming his previous belongings from Jabbas palace and tracking down his armor. They get the ship from jabbas palace and have a tense encounter with Cobb Vanth who tells them the Mandalorian has his armor. Boba and Fennec finish the mission for his armor. Boba shares with Fennec what he is planning. He wants to take over Jabbas domain. ”Why?” Fennic asks. ”I have scores to settle. I can’t do it alone.” Fennec agrees to help, for a price. They fly off in Slave 1 away from the palace. ”Where are we going?” ”I told you, I have scores to settle.” Slave 1 decends and hover over the sarlacc pit. You can hear the whining of the creature below but it is not clear if it’s from the creature or if Bobas recalls his entrapment from years ago. Boba is silent, then aligns his cannons downwards and fires. He keeps firing. Fennec is disturbed but says nothing. The pit burns and an extended tentacle falls to the sand, dead. Cut to some episodes of Boba and Fennec cleaning up Mos Espa and driving the other criminal elements from the town by show of force between the two. It is also shown that Boba is not a brutal prospective ruler to the people of Mos Espa. He spends an episode or two recruiting others to his cause, by favors or money. Maybe already familiar characters like Dengar and Bossk, the old gang, and has sent word to Mando. Cobb Vanth and his people are not interested in joining. The other crime families agree to a temporary ceasefire since Boba says he means to repel the syndicate, and we meet Black K, he is defeated and recruited, like before an assassination attempt is made on Boba and he uses his bacta tank after receiving injuries. A flashback to the tusken camp. Boba returns from an excursion to find the camp on fire and bodies strewn all over the ground. Boba is devastated and angry, but there is one survivor, the tusken child he saved previously. Boba asks him who is responsible. The child draws the symbol of the syndicate in the sand. Boba starts packing his bantha but the child stops him and points to another drawing beside the syndicate symbol; a figure wearing a wide brimmed hat, fanged grin, a breathing apparatus and wielding two guns. Boba stares in recognition and the campfire light is reflected in his eyes. They look almost red. End of episode. Cut to Bane’s intro as the syndicate frontman. He guns down Cobb Vanth and warns the village of Boba. He tells them Boba is a cold bloded killer who worked for the empire and only lives for credits and deserves no allegiance. There is no mandalorian episode. Instead Boba keeps trying to make allies and planning for the syndicate takeover. The tusken child is with him in the palace. Boba meets up with Dengar(or another already established minor character) and tells him he need help with a special assignment. ”A delicate matter”. He enters his ship and exits with a data pad. He says this information is more than 5 years out of date. He says he should have done it years ago, but was torn between two families. Dengar promises to return when he has confirmed the data. The syndicate arrive in force, the assassination was their work, the mayor is their puppet and so on. Boba wants to set up a meeting with the syndicate. Cad Bane appears. Bane tries to bait Boba. Bane mocks him for his previous status as the ”best” bounty hunter and so on. Boba does not back down and Bane contacts the syndicate leader who orders Boba and his minions dead. Fennec scans the transmission and gets the location of the syndicate leader, Boba dispatches her to their location. A fight ensues between the syndicate and Bobas people, but they don’t just stand behind a speeder, there is some more clever action with jetpack-flying and a full display of the bounty hunter arsenal etc. (My lunch break is almost over and i don’t have time to write out an entire action montage). The syndicate brings reinforcements, but Cobb Vanth’s people arrive in heroic fashion. The tide turns yet again as the syndicate brings in one of the droids with shields, Cad Bane bringing up the rear. They blast the defences down and kill some of the defenders. They cannot penetrate its shielding. The Tusken child watches from afar. The shielded droid is heading for the defenders headquarter and they fall back into it. Boba orders his people to flee and offers to draw the attackers off. He readies his jetpack. The tusken child appears from the sand, he is directly below the droid, inside the shielding. He climbs the droid and starts hacking with his stick at the panels and sensors, the droid goes crazy and stars firing blindly around into the syndicate troops. Boba and troop counterattack and beat them. The droid powers down under the relentless attack from the tusken child. The tusken child roars in victory. Everyone cheers. Cad Bane appears and grabs the child. He says his contract is on Boba alone. Boba calls his people off and Bane releases the tusken. Bane taunts Boba and calls him ”nothing but a killer for hire. ”Not any more” Boba answers. ”A pale imitation of your father. You hide behind that armor and mask like a coward, because you know what you are. Take it off. Show your face.” Bane fingers his blaster. Boba replies ” This is my face.”. They draw. Bane is faster and guns Boba to the ground, his armor deflects the blasts, Boba jetpacks towards Bane and instead draws his tusken stick. He beats Bane down. Bane says ”I knew you were a killer” and tries one final time to attack. Boba beats him back. ”Do it then” Bane says. Boba stands over him, poised to stab, but hesitates. He lowers the stick and says ”You’re no good to me dead”. Cut to Fennic who has found the syndicate leaders. She does her silent assassin thing and kills the guards until only the leader remains. He calls off the rest of the syndicate forces at gunpoint and is killed by Fennec. Cut to Boba and his people regrouping, Fennec returns confirms the kill. Fennec asks ”What now?”. Boba says he has decided to stay. He calls the people of Mos Espa ”his people” and now formally claims Jabbas domain. Cut to the theme song. Boba Fett sits on his throne, Fennec beside him and the tusken child. The crime families leaders bow before him, the camera pans out over the throne room, we see the other surviving people of Bobas group. On the wall next to throne hangs a figure encased in carbonite, he has a wide brimmed hat, a fanged snarl and a furious stare. Zoom out of the palace, there are people going in and out, zoom out to the dunes, the twin suns are rising. End credits with theme. Post credits scene: Dengar enters Boba’s private room. He presents a holopad and says ”I found him”. Boba taps the holo. It shows a still image of a cloaked old man looking over his shoulder, he is missing his right hand, he has a full beard shot through with white and burn marks adorn his ebony face. End series.

Loved the show.. felt like the series would have been stronger if we had a more linear structure.. first 3-4 episodes could have played like Star Wars dances with wolves we could have had the Mando interlude and then catch up with the current era mob boss Boba n it would have flowed much better.. regardless show worked for me and it was definitely some of the best Star Wars in a while :)

I guarantee you that at some crucial point in Season 3 of The Mandalorian, Grogu will pull out Yoda's lightsaber and save the day - showing that Luke allowed him to choose both...that's why the choice was off-screen, to build a surprise reveal later on.

It was an enjoyable show but it also shows the creative limits of what a Star Wars show could be. This show could have been amazing, Peaky Blinders in space, but instead it's a hodgepodge of ideas and some set up for Mandalorian season 3. It is what it is and until we get something like The Acolyte, a show that's supposed to be completely detached timeline wise, we'll probably get more of the same. Marvel-esque crossovers, background material, safe writing.

I agree. I think it individual episodes were better than the show as a whole. I'm mixed on the Grogu situation. It feels like they are maintaining the status quo rather than doing what would be more narratively satisfying.

Dan, I agree with your analysis. To me, it seemed the show was missing 2 more episodes that could have finished off the narrative of Boba's journey from his bounty hunter solo identity to his new-found desire for family and community. I was expecting a better resolution to the Tusken storyline, especially with Fennec expressing doubt that the speeder bike gang could have taken out the Tuskens.

Yeah, it was weird, I liked bits, but i think the problem can be summed up in Cad Bane. During the final fight between Boba and Bane, when they started talking about their history, my girlfriend turned to me and said "do they know each other?" Paying off the relationship from another series that a lot of the audience won't have seen, instead of the relationships from the series we're watching isn't going to work for a lot of people. Telling the story you're telling seems like a good place to start.

As usual, Dan, you’re totally on point: as cool as every individual episode was (some cooler than others), it failed as a series ostensibly focusing on Boba Fett. Way too many elements thrown in which detracted from our interest in Boba and his journey. Too many antagonists and undeveloped chemistry between Boba and Fennec (didn’t work for me). One gripe I have which I haven’t seen expressed online is how unnecessary Boba’s “revenge”on the Sarlacc is; as I understand it, the Sarlacc is an instinctual creature (like a tiger or a shark) on which you would not wreak vengeance but just be glad you survived it. That struck me as very dumb! How much more meaningful would it have been if his Tusken affiliation had been maintained, showing him trying to save them and them coming to his aid when he needed it?

I was never terribly excited about the show, people really seem to forget that everything interesting about Boba Fett really came from the Star Wars EU thats been made non canon, like his entire role in the movies were like three lines of dialogue, a fedex delivery, and a pratfall death. When they did the reveal at the end of Mando season 2 it was like….ok i guess? I dont really give a crap about Tatooine or its criminal underworld, it was never built up in any meaningful way as something that I ever would want to hear more about, nor did it seem like Boba Fett had any connection to it beyond…he brought Han Solo there to collect a bounty the one time. Where the show personally really lost me was when he starts talking about why he wants to quit bounty hunting and says “I’m sick of being betrayed by people who would just let us die” or something to that effect, and all i could think was “Wait…When did this happen?” We’ve never seen him get betrayed or even hinted at it, like hell Vader literally caught his bounty for him, and just handed him right over to Fett no problem in Empire, then he is at Jabba’s until Luke and Leila kill everyone and he pratfalls into the Salacc pit. So it felt like he’s trying to build something on this resentment and past that we’ve never seen or heard anything about on a planet that only seems to have crime as its primary industry, and the entire reason he seems to be able to hold power is because of Beskar armor and people’s need to only hit where it covers him. Not saying he needs to die or anything like that, but it just doesnt feel at all like anything has been resolved when his entire fighting force is like fifteen settlers and the power rangers. Presumably the Pyke syndicate has more than two of those droids, all that seems to need to happen is send four instead of two and call it a day?

Agreed 100% (as usual, albeit not always) on every point large and small except for your speculated reason as to _why_ they forced the reunion of Din and Grogu (and the setup for that) into The Book of Boba Fett instead of doing it (no less too soon) at the start of season three of The Mandalorian. If any concerns over questions of "Already?!" impacting the masses squealing gleefully had been a factor, they would've waited until the end of that season at the very earliest. My money is on Pedro Pascal wanting to move on, so they wanted to make the most (in terms of seeing the two together) of the final season of a series (and on-screen duo) that's a known hit, whereas TBoBF was more of a gamble - that sadly they clearly didn't know what to do with regardless - so it was made to sacrifice its runtime.

My impression of the show? Payoff without setup. The finale would have been fine, especially with all the tension between Boba and Cad Bane, had we actually witnessed that backstory. In order for this story arc to work we needed to see four things: 1. Boba being trained by Cad Bane - and taught to be ruthless and self-centered 2. Boba being a selfish jerk, perhaps untrusting and not trustworthy 3. Boba being changed by his experience with Tuskens - but struggling with the change - having instinctual response that would reflect his former self. Only after being fully accepted his change would be permanent. 4. People of Mos Espa truly becoming his people. Him building genuine rapport with the common folk. It seems hard to believe that Dave Filoni - a good writer as he is - was not aware of the content that would make Boba's arc complete. What on earth happened here? As much as I love the two awesome "interlude" episodes it does feel like 70% of effort went into those stories that were not really connected with actual main story line, which should have received more attention.

Grogu’s return does undue season two finale in a poorly done way but I have to admit I am relieved the lil guy isn’t murdered by Kylo. This series was a bait and switch I could never get over. I didn’t hate the idea of flashbacks but they took to much time away from the crime intrigue they marketed and I felt lied to. Episode 3 was actually one of my favorites. It doesn’t deserve to be but it was a turn around from flashbacks to present and that gave it extra credit to me. The weird bikes were funny but I excused it and only now wish they weren’t so out of place in Mos Espa. And like the flashbacks I didn’t think the Mando episodes were bad, infact I thought they were great but I never got over the fact that this series wasn’t what it was advertised and that soured it for me. Good breakdown.

Great analysis. I think the thing with Grogu is that Jedi's get all freaked out about attachment. So Luke potential ly allowed Grogu to start down "the dark path". I also thought Luke was acting very stilted and reserved when compared to his behavior in the trilogy. I probably wouldn't have minded the Mando episode if there had been at least a couple of scenes with Boba.

I 100 percent agree that this should’ve been one grand show like Dan said called Star Wars Stories or Star Wars Chronicles. Otherwise they should’ve kept Mando as it’s own thing and keep all these other characters out. Not everything has to tie in to everything else. The first season of The Mandalorian was still the best because, for the most part, it tried to be its own thing.
