In this All Sports History video we'll look back at what happened to the Minnesota North Stars before they moved to Dallas in 1993.
Here's what this "Minnesota North Stars History" video covers:
For 26 years Minnesota (widely known as one of the best places for hockey) was home to a NHL team, the North Stars. So what exactly led to the team leaving after so many seasons? In today’s video we’ll take a look back at how the team’s struggles to stay relevant, and an owner’s mismanagement and personal scandals ultimately doomed the franchise’s chances of survival in Minnesota.
With expansion to the NHL in 1967, and just after the Metropolitan Center (which would become the Minnesota North Stars Arena for their entire existence), the team began their first ever season in franchise history. After overcoming a tragedy in 1968, when star player Bill Masterton died after falling to the ice hard, the team found itself in playoff contention during its first season. Some early Minnesota North Stars highlights included beating the Los Angeles Kings, and getting one game away from the Stanley Cup final before losing to the St. Louis Blues in 1968. The team would soon face stiff competition not just in the NHL, but outside the league as well. in 1972, the World Hockey Association formed in the hopes of competing with the NHL, and one of the original teams was the Minnesota Fighting Saints. It didn't help that during this time the North Stars had begun to struggle, failing to reach the playoffs three years in a row. Even with the Fighting Saints outdrawing the North Stars on occasion, the Fighting Saints folded in 1976 due to financial problems with the team. Things continued to get worse for the North Stars, who were routinely drawing fewer and fewer crowds. The Cleveland Barons were also struggling pretty badly, and the owners George and Gordon Gund pitched a radical idea to the NHL. Why not merge the North Stars and Barons together? Well that's exactly what they did, and in 1979 the two teams officially merged with the North Stars remaining while the Barons ceased operations.
By the early 1980's the North Stars fortunes began to change. In 1981, the infamous Minnesota North Stars vs Boston Bruins Brawl happened which helped spark the team onto an incredible run at the Stanley Cup. The brawl produced the Minnesota North Stars full game record of 211 penalty minutes. The team unexpectedly defeated the Bruins, Sabres, and the Flames to reach the finals for the first time in team history. Unfortunately, they ran into to the red hot New York Islanders who had just won the cup the previous year. The Islanders proved to be too much for the North Stars, who were defeated in five games. After realignment in 1982, the North Stars would languish season after season until in absolutely dreadful 1987 season where they only won 19 games. The only true bright spot during this period was the drafting of Minnesota North Stars Mike Modano, who would go on to have a hall of fame career. The Gund Brothers ended up selling the team in 1990, and Norman Green took over as the new owner. During this time, the team embarked on yet another improbable run throughout the Minnesota North Stars 1991 playoffs. The Stars reached the finals once again, only to be defeated by the Penguins in 6 games. It was long after this that Norm Green decided to move the team due to a number issues surrounding the franchise. The Minnesota North Stars last game took place on April 13, 1993. It would be another 7 years before Minnesota regained an NHL team, when the Wild first played in 2000. The Wild have on occasion played tribute to the North Stars, like in 2020 when they wore reverse retro sweaters inspired by the Minnesota North Stars jersey 1978.

My Grandparents and my father had season tickets for the Northstars first 19 seasons. They were there the night of Masterton's hit that turned fatal, they were there when Boucha suffered his eye injury when attacked by a goon from the Bruins. I like to joke that the Northstars gift to my family when I was born was their first trip to the finals a couple months later. A few thoughts. 1. Lou Nanne was a terrible GM. If it hadn't been for the Cleveland merger he wouldn't have had the extra talent to trade around with. If head coach Glen Somner could have stayed sober, Nanne wouldn't have hired horrible coaches after Somner had to step down for good. Case in point, Bill Mahoney; who took Bobby Smith off the power play, who the previous season set a franchise record 115 point season. Also the fan support was not very good. My grandfather was going to games in the late 70s and the attendance was awful (at one point averaging less than 3,000). Everyone blames Norm Green, but before the Gunds sold the Stars, the Star Tribune & Channel 5 News did a poll if people would care if the Gunds moved the Northstars? 60% said they didn't care if the team moved. While attendance went up with the run to the finals in 91, the attendance dropped at the start of the 92-93 season because the Northstars, in an effort to increase season ticket sales during the 90-91 season, did a buy 2-get 1 extra seat. When the promo ended and the next season fans were expected to pay for all the tickets now, many either dropped all their tickets entirely or dropped the free extra seat. Want further proof of the poor fan support of the Twin Cities? The Timber Wolves were almost moved to New Orleans, & later the Twins were almost contracted because they were drawing less fans than the St. Paul Saints independent baseball team. Also the Metropolitan Sports Commission, who fleeced ownership of the Met Center from the founding owners who built it, never helped the Northstars with the Met. Gunds paid their own renovation to the Met, nor helped Green renovate the Met. Which begs to ask why would a man spend $20 million dollars to renovate the Met Center only to be accused of wanting to move the team from day 1? The Metropolitan Sports Commission wanted the Stars in the Target Center but would not help them at all. Later they would have to help the struggling Timber Wolves, who almost moved after only 5 years there. Also it was more than just Coke or Pepsi sponsorship that kept the Stars out of the Target Center. It was all sponsorship. The Wolves told the Stars that the Stars could only negotiate with the Wolves sponsors. Kinda hard to negotiate when the sponsor companies know that there is no competing sponsors. I was at that neutral site game at the Target Center for the Stars against Ottawa. My Dad and my Grandfather agreed that the Target Center was worse for viewing hockey than the Met. FYI it was Minneapolis lawyer Brian Burke who bought the Winnipeg Jets in an effort to get NHL hockey back to the Cities. But the Target Center and the Sports Commission wouldn't help Burke & Phoniex gave a better offer, just like San Jose did for the Gund Brothers. Thankfully for the Wild and their fans, the Metropolitan Sports Commission have no say in the Xcel Center or the Wild.

Norm Green was a terrible owner who not only mismanaged the team but also had a lot of gambling debts the video should have also mentioned that but as far as the teams presence go I still miss them to this day.

There wasn't a hard core hockey fan in the entire world no matter what team you supported that weren't sad when The North Stars moved to Dallas.. Even though i lived in Chicago I felt bloody betrayed by the NHL when the North Stars left.

it was all NHL collusion. put an up and coming team in Dallas where it would be easier to build a fan base that way and stick an expansion team in Minnesota where a hockey fan base already exists.

@@AllSportsHistory Quebec City could get the Nordiques back but it lacks the corporate commitment to make it happen. The Videotron Centre is a modern 19,000 seat arena hosting junior hockey just sitting there waiting. Such a shame.

Norm Green was the biggest stab in the back Minnesota ever endured. And then he sold the team two years after he moved them to Dallas! What I remember the most is being at the old Met Centre the night Henry Boucher got ambushed by Dave Forbes against the Bruins. I thought Boucher had lost his eye with all the blood on the ice.

I was in almost all of the old arena's and when I saw a game at the Met Center decades ago I simply couldn't believe what an incredible arena it was - I moved around and every seat in the place was great and the fans and atmosphere was beyond incredible.. Those home white jerseys were also magnificent - seriously among my top 3 favorite of all time..

@@davidthompson62 His skating was first class too. But he turned into “Joe defense” Overnight at the will of Hitchcock and still was a point per game. You always gotta know a play years coach, in dead puck Era, when he needed to score, him and Brett Hull provided. Could you imagine Modano who’s. Always had a defense first coach even in Mahoney & Bob Gainey in Minnesota, . Play for a Glenn Sather?.

I lived in Minnesota at this time and was devastated that the North Stars left. However, there is a lot of revisionist history by Minnesotans who seem to pin everything on Norm Green. The fact is despite them being a fairly competitive team with good players to root for, they did not draw fan support. The Twins Cities were too slow to recognize that in the new era of doing business that cities do in fact need to build arenas to keep their teams around. So much for the State of Hockey.

People only understand what they understand. if the newspapers & news slants things a certain way, and doesnt discuss the business side too much, the average fan will go by that. I lived in Minnesota and was at almost every Northstar game (80s/90s) and watched the very last game played in the Met Center. I was also there when they unveiled the name change and new jerseys. I'm back in Texas (Waco) and glad they're here. Wasn't happy when they left because I stayed in Minnesota a couple more years. But things turned out well 😊. I still wear my satin Northstar jacket. I have most of the rookie cards of Mikey-Mo, Brian Bellows and so many legendary NS players.

I don’t know why but the Minnesota North Stars works as a better team name to me rather than the Minnesota Wild. I was never around when they had the North Stars, but it’s very cool to see their legacy from their time in Minnesota. I love these historical videos about fallen franchises, keep up the good work!

They couldn’t name them the North Stars because when they went to Dallas as part of the deal the team history went with it. I don’t like the name Wild. I always thought the new team should have been called the MINNESOTA NORSEMEN. Keeping in line with the Norwegian influence of the state and the Vikings.

Great video, as always! I always thought it was a crime that Minnesota lost the North Stars to Dallas. Or that they didn't at least get to reclaim the name when the NHL re-expanded there. Seeing good ole Gump Worsley, I had a thought for a topic that might make an awesome All Sports History: The full-face fiberglass mask era of the NHL (What Happened to the Classic Goalie Mask?). So, like, 1959 to the mid-80s or so when the last goalie wore a full-face mask? You could cover the early days of Plante, the holdouts who went maskless, the wild mask art of the 70s, and how they eventually gave way to safer options like the helmet cage or the combo. Heck, you could even mention Jason Vorhees. :) Anyway, I really like your stuff, and tell all my sports friends about your channel. Keep up the awesome work!

A friend of mine was a big North Stars fan and me being a Blues fan we had our own personal rivalry. He was devastated when they moved to Dallas and if you mention Norm Greens name to this day he gets pissed. He hates the Dallas Stars and has adopted the Wild as his team. We fans get emotional about our teams, When I see him I still call him Danny Grant ( his favo player) or Gump. We love reminiscing about the old days and games between our teams. He called me when the Blues finally won their Cup and offered congrats. I used to tune North Star games in on the radio . WCCO Minny/St Paul and the play by play man Al Shaver . Long live the Minny N Stars.

In football, Houston Oilers fans pretty much feel that way about the Tennesee Titans and pitch a huge fit every time the Titans want to wear some throw-back luv ya blue and an oil derrick. What gets missed is the players who played for the old teams get forgotten about and sort of lose their identity, unlike teams who stay in the same place forever. Now, former Coyotes players won't even have a franchise to belong to anymore. I am empathetic to your friend though even though I am a big Dallas Stars fan.

When they opened Met Sports Center, they had the beer vendors carrying backpack with draft beer in them and a hose to fill cups. They didn't anticipate that climbing the stairs shook the beer and produced cup after cup of foam. My parents took our aunt and uncle to the first game. They were so impressed, they bought 4 season tickets every year until the franchise left.

I was born in Dallas in 1994 so… I very much benefited from this debauchery and am a die hard life long Dallas Stars fan. I know it broke hearts but I’m so thankful it happened. I don’t know what my life would’ve been like if the Stars hadn’t come into town and made me a rink rat as a kid

NYR Ranger fan for 40 yrs here. Out of all the relocations, folds, and expansion teams in the NHL, this feels like the worst move. Dallas would've gotten a team. It just feels strange when I see the Wild. It never feels right as an NHL opponent. Don't feel that with any other team.

In this case, as in some others, it was due to a rich, greedy a$$hole rip off artist like Norm Green. He 🎉 didn't appear to be too sound with the green $$$. $70 million in debt when he sold the Dallas Stars. Wow.

My favorite fact about the North Stars is the fact that the chirp made famous by the show Letterkenny "Give your balls a Tug you T**f**k*r" was a reference to the chirping from the bench of the Penguins at North Stars Forward Brian Bellows during that 1991 Stanley Cup finals.

Fact is we gave away the North Stars. We had no reason not to keep the team. There should have been a deal with Target Center, and we figured it out enough to build the X. The Stars never drew like the Wild do because of bad marketing. I hate Norm Green but the Wild have done a better job of being stable than the Stars ever did.

Well, if you were around at the time you would know Norm couldn't keep his d!ck in his pants and many female staffers filed suit in '92. Norm's wife was leaving. Norm settled out of court and took the team with him down to Dallas chasing after his wife. Look it up!

As a hockey fan I still long for the day when they come back to play in Minnesota again how about folding the Wild and making them into the new Northstars or bringing the Dallas Stars back to the St.Paul area.

I miss the hawks and Northstar rivals. The Dallas stars were playing Vegas in 2023 semis. Didn't care who won. But I would've watched them if they were still in Minnesota.

Really enjoy these kinds of sports docos. My first live NHL game was in 1990 between the Oilers and the North Stars. Loved those green iconic uniforms, Was sad to see them leave for Dallas but atleast it didnt take long for the Wild to come to Minny. The Whalers, Nords, and North Stars will always have a special place in my heart.

The only people at their games are not Coyotes fans, but fans of the opposition. It's been that way since 1996, unless the team makes the playoffs, then the "bandwagoners" show up. Great video I remember how fun it was both runs to the Stanley Cup Finals I really thought the North Stars were going to win against Pittsburgh but Mario stole the show I saw many games at the Met Center

Well done video, was and really still am a North Stars fan, mainly because Al MacAdam is a friend of the family. Saw the North Stars play the Habs in 1979 at the Montreal Forum, big, fast, hard hitting game! Cool to see footage of Gilles Meloche, Cesare Maniago and Gump Worsley...I remember when these guys were still playing. Very good.

Agreed, I cannot get into these names that are singular overarching descriptions of natural phenomenon like most of the WNBA names. Maybe that's just being old since every single major sports team growing up had an s at the end of the team name. The Avalanche started that crap in the NHL and I pray Utah does not go with it in their first year.

It was a real shame that Minny left The NHL. They had established a rich history in Minnesota and had played in The Stanley Cup finals. But due to mismanagement by a sleazy owner, all of the history got moved to Dallas where it had no business being. The NHL owners should make a rule that if a club relocates they cannot take the name of the team with them. If this would have been in effect, the new team in Minnesota wouldn’t be “The Wild” but “The North Stars” as they should be. Do you think ex-Minnesota players like going to Dallas to be honored??

I think the N logo was one of the best of all time. I remember when they switched to the STARS wordmark in the 90s, and thinking they gave up a classic look (then again, there was a lot of that in the 90s lol).

Love the old Green and Gold jerseys, wish the Wild would switch to these colors for their regular jerseys. Also in 1982 the Stars ended up swapping picks sort of with Boston not Detroit, the Bruins still picked first with the agreement they would not take Bellows, instead they chose defenseman Gord Kluzak and allowing the Stars to take Brian Bellows.

Minnesota's loss was DFW's gain. Everyone blames the owner when he wants to move but it always seems to come down to wanting better facilities and stronger community support, which means more money in his pocket. As a baseball comparison, the Oakland A's will be finally leaving a place that simply cannot support major league sports, for the exact same reasons.

I was paralyzed in a car accident back in 1991. Prrior to that I used to attend University of Minnesota summer hockey camps. After I became paralyzed I received a box to my hospital room in the shape of a hockey stick. Upon opening it was from the Minnesota North Stars and autographed by many of its players. It's 2023 and I still have that stick in my showcase. Couldn't have asked for a better pick me up in a dark time then that.

When they moved to Dallas - they would have been better off staying the North Stars with the same great looking uniforms. Then they could be known as the North American Stars. I just never liked the revamped Dallas Stars uniforms and logo. Same when the football Houston Oilers moved to Nashville. Should have stayed the Oilers. Because when the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to LA they were smart and kept the name.

I have tried a few times to be a fan of the North Stars, Wild growing up and living in Minnesota. The thing that ruins it for me is the violence, the fighting and nasty assaults players commit. Back in the 1980’s the Stars games were on free tv. I was making dinner and decided to watch the hockey game, that was to begin at around 7:30. I tuned in a little early and the rink was full of gear and bodies were all over. The announcer was explaining in the pregame warmup the benches cleared and it was a donnybrook. Since the game had not started, none of the referees got involved, nobody called the police, what a shit show. I changed the channel and don’t think I ever watched them again. I do watch college hockey sometimes, they don’t tolerate the fighting b.s, As far as the Stars leaving, I couldn’t care less, except it led to the hockey league extorting the taxpayers to build a new arena. Just like the NBA, MLB, nfl ect. . As soon as one gets built, they come back with their hands out asking for millions more.

Also, while unlikely for a number of reasons, and 10 is better than 9, do think a 12 team league has a lot more features you can use to sell rivalries and playoffs and such.

The Coyotes should have been allowed to relocate back to Winnipeg since they lose millions every year, have meager fan support, and are just plain irrelevant. Seriously, this team is a joke, yet for some reason Gary Bettman has kept them in Arizona when it would make more sense to move the team to Quebec City who really wants the Nordiques to come back or go to Houston, which is a big market and would be better for them financially.

I work at the American Airline Center now. I look over my left shoulder and see Bill Masterton #19 sign ever Stars game. I also went the first Stars game against Detroit on October 5, 1993. We won 6-4 with Neal Broten scoring the first goal. Go Stars!
