A great example of all of those millionaires that thought it was fashionable to own a club. Without any passion for the game, they were unwilling to ride the bumps and grinds. The moment any issue arose, they couldn’t exit quick enough. Great video btw and thanks!

I've really enjoying these mini documentaries you've been producing. Great idea to fill the gap in the off-season.

In theory, it was an okay idea but how hot it gets in Townsville in the summer made it terrible for the players. The only positive thing was Robbie Fowler and away games, as Fury always got a good crowd at away games due to Fowler, but not much at home. But they were dead in the water once the original owner pulled out after a season.

One of the reasons that Fury and Gold Coast were picked to join the A-League in 2009 was due to Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory having a 5 year licence excluding any other potential teams from those cities entering the comp.

The best things about the Fury were the name, the colours and the logo.

This is a pretty good case study given that the financial woes may have been kickstarted by the GFC. And that the A-league will likely be entering a probably woorse financial environment from next season. I think the A-league's franchise model is at most risk due a poor economic climate and there's a lot of lessons that cann be learned from Fury's demise to navigate the challenges that A-league clubs will face in the next 3 years. If there's something that you could clarify, you are welcome to correct me in a reply.

I have a theory that teams named after concepts (fury, force, glory) are never as successful as ones named after animals or people or even without nicknames at all

A-League is the worst when it comes to expansions, and I think that has stagnated Australian football amongst other issues.

Confuses me to no end how Wollongong and Canberra didn't get given an expansion in any of these rounds

Market is too small and isolated, Weather is to hot and humid in the Summer and would struggle to find an owner and sponsors

Mate, tell me you've fudged the dates?! I can't believe it's been 13 years since their exit, that's scary. It was some real astute business handing a franchise to a city of 170k with its main employers being the defence force and mining. Possibly the Two worst trades to bank on people being able to attend games on the regular. On the upside it's just ahh, you know...a short hop, skip and a jump up north to Cairns. A city of 130k and just short of a commute of 80...I mean, an 800km round trip for any fans that could maybe help keep the team financially viable. Legitimate genius move by Ben Buckley and the team at HQ, ever the optimists when it had a 99% chance of failure the minute it applied through to inception hour. On one hand, we've got the powers that be doing this sorta stuff but what's the alternative? People that think A-leg won't flourish until a 2nd division is introduced with a promotion/relegation system. There's no game, no mere mortal nor devine mystical power that could be a success with either of the above two Mensa clubs calling the shots.
