What happened to the old rock and roll music venues? They're hidden in plain sight in Reno, Nevada!

Huge rock acts used to play some forgotten venues in Reno - please join myself and Max Volume as we take a look back at some of Reno's venerable rock clubs and larger venues, both of which no longer host shows. You would never know that some of these unassuming buildings showcased some big names, or names that were destined to become big.
Link to our Elvis in Northern Nevada episode: • Elvis Presley in Reno,...
Music: "Resurrection" composed and performed by Steve Ellison with drums by Scott Taylor. "Dire Need" written and performed by Steve Ellison and All For Nothing. "Outlaws" written by Steve Ellison and performed by Hot Rod Rebellion.

This is the place to learn interesting things about Reno, the state of Nevada and the American west! I've lived in Reno for 38 years (as an adult!). I've had a lifelong interest in history, and spend much time exploring and researching this wonderful area. I started this channel to share some of what I've learned. I produced a full-length documentary film on the history of Reno's Harolds Club casino in 2015.
Perhaps you're thinking of moving to Reno and are looking for background on the area, or you're already a resident and this content might help give you a sense of place. I shall endeavor to cater to both groups!
I'm also a craft beer enthusiast, and thought I'd talk about some of that scene here as well. I started homebrewing in 1992, and earned the Certified Cicerone designation in 2015 - this is a sommelier-like program for beer people.
Please subscribe, share and come along with me on this journey! Thanks and cheers!
Steve

Hey Steve Richard here...1989 Easy Street I saw my first show here in town, I saw Monster Magnet and Corrosion of Conformity, also saw my first Mosh Pit. Del Mar, Great white, I actually photographed them with Max before the show. Kansas, Lover Boy, Robin Trower, and others. Many of the shows at the Grand Sierra Queensryche. I saw Dishwalla at the Little Wall, and I had dinner with JR Richards at the bar. I saw Type O also, Tool at the Livestock, and Sevendust at Stoney's. Did you miss the Oasis and the Rock place in downtown, south of Fitzgeralds, the alley entrance??? I saw you there for a few shows. Pioneer I saw Candlebox and Creed. BTW, Creed played the Oasis also. Good show bud! Oh and I saw Robert Plant solo with Joan Jet , also Airplane at Lawlor and Metallica in the round, around 2003?

I was there for the And Justice for All tour, '89. Me and a buddy snuck in. We were 18 and broke lol. My first concert at Lawlor was in '84 when an unknown group named Bon Jovi whose song Runaway had just hit the airwaves, opened up for the Scorpions on their Love at First Sting tour. Another memorable show at Lawlor was in '90 when Judas Priest came back to town after their infamous trial here for their Painkillers tour. Can remember Rob Halford coming out on the stage riding his Harley. Then proclaiming how it was great to be back in Reno because they wanted to be here, and not because they HAD to be here.

I worked for Starsound Audio in the early 80s. Remember setting up for Pablo Cruise with a fellow named Mel. That upstairs office had a glass topped, coffee table with a Giant 24" Hartly Sub woofer as it's base. A few shows I remember: Livestock - Doobie bros, Journey (orig without Steve Perry), The Guess Who. Delmar - Soft white underbelly (Blue Oyster Cult incognito), also a Carlos Santana sit in under some band's name. Lawlor - Hewey Lewis, Pretenders, Stevie Wonder (in the round :), Phil Collins. Centennial Colosseum - (was crew for) J. Geils and Fleetwood Mac. Also saw, Jethro Tull, Bread, Chicago, Black Oak Arkansas, Rare Earth, Guess Who (again). Reno/Sparks Convention - Chicago, Yes... I'm sure I've forgotten many :). Other odd things I remember: I was sound provider for some Punk shows at Skating Plus in Sparks. These included Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, DOA, Sevin Seconds and many more. There was a bar called "Driftwood Lounge" in Sparks that had Gary Pucket & the Union Gap. Thanks for the memories!

I lived in Reno from 1982-87. I was a bartender at Harolds Club casino. Great memories. Do you know what happened to the gun collection they had? It was very impressive. Also, They had a 1949 Buick "Woody" station wagon covered with silver dollars. They used to park it out front. Wonder who's garage it's in now? I hope it's in someone's garage. Lol. Also, they filmed a movie at Harolds Club in 1955. It's called 5 Against the House. It starred Guy Madison, Brian Keith and Kim Novak. They played college kids that tried to rob Harolds Club. It's a great flick because it shows the Club (and Reno for that matter) at the height of it's hey day Man they really packed them in back in those days. And it shows the Roaring Camp bar in all its glory. Sorry Don't mean to ramble. I just have so many great memories of Reno in the sweet days of my youth! Oh and this video is about the music. Apologies. I saw Bo Diddly at the Nugget. Paul Revere and the Raiders and Tony Orlando at Harrahs. And several concerts at the arena at UNR. Most notably The worst concert I ever attended was Van Halen in 84 It was just before they broke up and it really showed that they weren't getting along. And I really enjoyed the Julian Lennon concert The closest I'll get to seeing the Beatles! Lol Sorry there I go rambling again. God bless Reno
@SteveTRYK

Thanks for a thorough comment! The Harolds gun collection was auctioned off to the four winds. The gentleman who's company handled the auction acquired the Silver-dollar Buick. I visited it about ten years ago. I still have video of that and may do an episode on it! Cheers!

As a child I remember hearing ads on KOZZ for the Grand Ballroom. Del Mar Stations legend is still remembered and charished. I saw Testament there and met Chuck Billy, James Murphy, and Dave Lombardo that evening. Lawlor Events Center hold many memorable moments for me. My first concert was Bon Jovi and Cinderella in 1987. The same 1989 Metallica show with Faith No More opening that you saw I did as well. I was 12 and this was my second concert. I saw Metallica 2 more times at Lawlor also The Scorpions, Megadeth, Van Halen, and I'm sure others also crossed the stage at Lawlor when I graduated in 1995. The Fallout Shelter was a frequent destination when I was in high school. Met Trixter when they came to Reno and stopped by the ZROCK station station to promote thier show that night at The Ice House. It was Father's Day and was able to get my father and I on the guest list for the show. First time seeing Alice Cooper was at the Hilton outdoors. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Forgot the Livestock Events Center saw the Slayer show there. It was nice to see someone grab Max Volume out of where ever he was and dusted him off. Just kidding. What would Northern Nevada radio sound like without him. I know it was in Sparks, but another iconic local venue as far as music goes Sierra Stix. Greenbrea and Sullivan. Not sure if any national acts came through but I know local bands played there.

I use to work for the Fallout Shelter (Upstairs was the Alley Club owned by an amazing woman named Shelly if I recall she also owned Bad Dollys on 4th). I worked that TON event. lol Nope there was another entrance that lead into the department store. The FOS was operated by someone who I don't remember the name of but he ran the reptile zoo in the basement of that building and would do music on the weekends. The FOS also hosted a little unknown musician a little while before the Typo O show by the name of Marilyn Manson. There was a riot there at the Fallout because the manager saw how good a Rave went he decided to host a "Black Rave" with Rap all night long and a massive fight broke out and a few people were hurt. Shout out to Brad from Roller Kingdom who was there that night and was a massive hero.

Watching this video makes me realize how much I missed concert music wise in my life! My burning question is: your band’s song at the end looks sped up but it doesn’t sound sped up and yet the words match the mouth. How was that done?
@SteveTRYK
@SteveTRYK 3 месяца назад
Thanks for asking! I patterned this video after the Guns n Roses video "Garden of Eden". It's done by slowing the actual recording of the song down 50%. The band plays to the song in this slow, sludgy time as the camera rolls. Then the video itself is sped up 50%, and the original song is added. In this way the motions and the vocals stay in sync, but looks sped up.

My late wife was a songwriter/amateur musician, and we went to a LOT of live shows back in the day. One of which was at the GSR when it was the Hilton (or maybe the MGM whatever), at that outdoor area they had. Which was pretty awesome, there were no bad seats as I recall. Anyway, the headliner was Bob Dylan, whom we had both wanted to see forever, but seldom did any live shows, even then. Also on the ticket: Van Morrison. Dylan totally sucked, terrible show (we saw him again a few years later at an indoor fairgrounds venue in Sonoma County, Ca. where he was even worse!) But Van Morrison blew us away! He was totally in the groove, and once or twice during his set, jets were taking off from the Reno airport and totally blasted right over the venue, so he just had the band continue playing whatever song he was in the middle of, but he quit singing and resumed once the noise passed by. Man he was awesome! Thanks for that great memory!

That same year they played at a Day on the Green with an incredible lineup AC/DC Cheap Trick Blue Oyster Cult Journey Ted Nugent. A fun fact about me is I was the amateur DJ on KOZZ in the early 80’s. Every Sunday night at midnight to 1am they had a guest amateur DJ. A couple of other places I remember being briefly popular: Zaps (Zapps?) at Kietzke and Moana where a security guard beat the crap out of a football player. I can't remember if he was just seriously injured or killed. There was also Doc and Eddies in both Reno and Sparks. Also there was a country music bar/club on Oddie Boulevard close to where a 24 hour pizza place called Bojo's.
