Here is the difference between surface gap (perma gap) spark plugs and J style spark plugs. These are the two most common types of spark plugs used in outboards. If your outboard won't idle right or keeps misfiring, you can sometimes use a different type of spark plug! LINKS TO OUTBOARD PARTS/SPARK PLUGS BELOW:

You might notice that your outboard uses these weird looking spark plugs. However, there is a reason for this!
A trick to get your Evinrude/Johnson outboard to idle better is to use regular "J" style spark plugs.

If you don't see your outboard listed that it can use regular "J" style spark plugs DON'T USE THEM! You can SEVERELY damage your outboard if you try to run the wrong type of spark plug. It's not worth it just to guess.
There are also boating forums that you can triple check online to make sure that regular "J" style spark plugs will work in your outboard.
If you find out that you CAN use these regular "J" style spark plugs, definitely try them out. The performance difference is night and day. Your idle and low speed trolling performance will increase big time!

the old mercury "Clam shell" motors inline 6s use a flat plug like on the left.

Used one in a push mower with a manual choke, worked great, never fouls. Unknown heat range match.

Most probably such a replacement decrease the compression ratio , so this explains why high speed performance is worse . The cars runs perfectly long time on 5-6K RPM so there is no problem for J gap spark plugs to work on high RPM . Just the power of the engine decrease a little bit with such a plugs because of the volume of the cavity between the insulator and the metal spark plug body.

Great insight into evinrude outboards. I own a 1960 evinrude lightwin 3hp, and I've been having low idle speed problems and just not getting the full power. I've heard champion are crap but evinrude comes with them, so it makes sense that champions are best with evinrude. Thanks for good info.

Yea, TRUST ME, Champion plugs are the BEST for Evinrudes. Especially on that vintage outboard you don't want to use NGK spark plugs. I don't care what anyone says. The old 2 stroke Evinrudes run perfectly fine with Champion copper plugs. That is what is recommended in the OEM service manuals and I have even seen it on little stickers on these motors.

@@MattsShop we are having issues with plugs fouling (pretty sure thats the issue) on a late 1980’s mercury 7.5 hp and its using surface gap plugs NGK brand. Is there a possible issue with that plug/brand being used? Or is it just how rich the air/fuel adjustment is on the carb? We are using the recommended 50:1 ratio mix with the quicksilver marine oil. The motor has run great up until a recent waterfowl hunt. Has a month of cold water waterfowl use on it and about 5 months regular fishing season use

Surface gap plug uses the piston as a conductor. The spark has nothing to reach out to until the piston reaches TDC. Standard plugs have the hook on the end that allows the spark to ignite constantly which burns off any leftover fuel in the cylinders between strokes. That's what gives you a cleaner, more efficient idle and less likely to flood the plug.

Isn’t true! Do you believe that the piston come to the central electrode as close as the metal spark plug body is ? If you believe that I would ask you how then you can mount in the same engine “ J” gap plug and piston doesn’t hit it ? It’s called surface plug , because the spark discharge happens on the surface of the ceramics between the central electrode and the ground electrode ( which is the all full ring surrounding the central electrode in this case ) .

I got a 1974 115 hp evinrude and all I new was J plugs Champion J plugs but no spark three wires on top motor purple gray and black seem to be cut can’t find where they go I got a 1974 book coming service book on 115 hp evinrude

Those are important. They either go to the stator or the trigger/timer base.

Hey Matt, brilliant video as always! I just need to ask you for some advice based on some findings I found with mine. Yesterday I went to change the spark plugs in my Evinrude VRO 60HP and noticed that two spark plugs were clearly used and showed signs of use and then the bottom cylinder spark plug looked brand new like it has never been used? Surely this can not be right. Also my engine does not travel any faster than 9mph or 8 knots on "full throttle" I have checked the cables and the remote control box as well as where they attach on the engine and it will not travel any further on the engine or remote control ends. I noticed a slight improvement when changing the sparm plugs like it wanted to scream but it was short lived and soon returned back to how it was before 8knots max speed. Do you have any suggestions for me to try?

great info Matt! i have a 1988 evunrude 9.9 , i am using the QL77JC4 , in my owners manual it says to gap at 0.040 . That is a big gap , i always thought it was 0.030 . what the right gap MATT?

I'd use the gap the manual says. I think I set my L77JC4 spark plug gap to 0.035". On some forums guys play with the gap from 0.030" to 0.040" to get the best mix of trolling/idle vs high speed performance.

Lot of information, I looked online in some guides and it seems the the NGK BUHW is what I need for my 1988 Mariner 100HP? Not a mechanic at all...but looking to replace plugs this weekend. Any help/confirmation?

I went with the BUHW, runs awesome. There was actually a mix of j and surface gap when I opened up. Unfortunately I only ran it once and then the exhaust plate popped; nothing to with plugs though.

The chart for mine match the one in your left hand is that the number for the j plug I won’t get one of the high rpm ones with that number ? Have fouled two sets of the other one trolling and thought Mabey I was running to rich

If you can't find this recommendation anywhere: Google, service manuals, or cross reference charts I don't recommend it. It will cause engine damage.

Most of these old 2 stroke outboards run at 5500 RPM wide open. Most 2 stroke chainsaws are like 13,500 RPM. Ufo's run at 1,000,000 RPM everyone knows that!

champion better mariner if change from surf plug be sure measer took out compare put in over must be same going inn if too long you damage punch hole piston bent rod match up going inn! if one going in little longer safety get spark plugs washer shim match took out as one going inn! you can use spark plug shim washer as spacers ! pertect! damage engine!

I use the ql77jc4 & foul out a lot . I switched to a next hotter plug & runs ok . Not fouling out as much but I’m wondering if it will damage my 30hp evinrude because of using a hotter plug. What do you think?

I don't know of a hotter plug. These outboards like L77JC4 or the noise suppression QL77JC4. You just have to be careful not to get a plug that's too long. It will hit the pistons. I would only use the recommended plugs.

I would say that if you are fouling alot of ql77jc4 plugs then you may be having a carb issue and getting to rich of a fuel air mix

I switched to the QL82YC and never looked back. Runs better than the QL78YC. Better idle and less fouling.

agree junk! watch simple steps usen champion over flate serfice junk plugs match length took out! vs one going in place if longer stop get spark plug spacer shim plug back measure length took out shaim tell same or little shoter one took out! i use johnson 115! i had double power torque able pull skie like had differant motor! besure make sure plug put in little shorted! have electro! give cleanance use spark plug wash shim get at orelly! auto parts! may need two? do not over tight!

Well our mechanic who we trust told us if we would if kept using ngk j plugs in our 2 stroke 175 motor it would of blown up at some point but hes not wrong we were using the wrong ones oops 🤣

Can i use a j plug in a mercury thunderbolt 70 ? It comes with flat spark plug. So im thinking if the piston when it comes up would hit the plug with electrode. Help please

Assume the answer is NO! Unless you find a chart online, or on forums that people have done it and it works. DON'T just try it!! You will damage the motor. This works on some Evinrudes. I have no clue about the other brands of outboards.

I agree with Matt's Shop here, verify first! I do have a 76 Merc 115 TOP. I just pulled the plugs, it looks to me like they are too high compression and would hit the piston top on the Mercs. I have used both on my 2005 mercury 150hp. They both work fine couldn't tell the difference. But then again I'm staying with Jplugs because that's what the factory had in it.

NO! On Force 85 HP engines you have to use Surface gap plugs. J plugs will not work. I have the same engine. Damage will happen!!!

I had same problemi had heater coil. Sleve. I. RJ19LM. 90 MARINER GAP .O44. NOW RUN DAM GOOD. NPBODY WANT GIVE OUT INF BEST THANG GET HEATER COIL KIT. INSERT FLAT SURF IN SLAVE THEN. GET CHAMPION RJ19LM. GAP.44.

Can't agree with him on the champion spark plugs. Most mechanics of any type engine will tell you champions are JUNK and don't every put them in ANYTHING!

Jeff Jenkins Not true at ALL. Who wants to run NGK Japanese spark plugs in a 70's-80's vintage Evinrude or Johnson lol Champions were specified then and they are just as good now. USA motor=USA plugs Japanese motor=Japanese plugs I don't know what mechanics you are talking to, but they are wrong!

I have to agree with Matt's Shop, I have a great friend and outboard mechanic that recommended Champion marine plugs for my 1998 Johnson OP 225. And the motor purrs... And I run Champion plugs for my Briggs too.. I love Champions since I started using them in the 70's, never had a problem. I believe in using the plug designed and built by the same country as well. NGK and Champion both good plugs. but stick with manufacturer design if possible.
