The guy was adventurous and wanted to adventure to places few people see. I guess it's easy to judge others when you choose to remain in your tiny little bubble behind a keyboard.
Okay, first of all, my comment was on what the woman at the beginning of the video said, but since you went there, let's go there then. If I come to your country and find that it's illegal to (for whatever reason) have sex and that having sex would be an offense that was punishable by death, you would NOT see me in the streets trying to hit on women or pick up prostitutes. Now, to you, it may seem like tearing a poster was meaningless, but in NK, they would beg to differ. Is it a stupid and somewhat unfairly strict law? Yes, it is, but when you visit ANY foreign country, aren't you expected to abide by said country's laws, irrespective of what you thought of them?? I'm sorry he died, but kid STILL made a VERY stupid decision in the worst place imaginable that he could!!
@@cocogoat1111you saw the video. The woman said it's not just a poster it has their leader on it that makes it treason. You can't go to the White House and steal a picture of the president and not be jailed for it.
I feel really bad for his roommate. A seemingly funny joke (even Otto laughed) that has weighed on him. Even after Otto’s passing, I know he’s haunted by it.
It reminds me of The Day The Music Died. Waylon Jennings made a joke to Buddy Holly. Buddy had joked that he hoped Waylon’s bus crashed, and Waylon joked back about the plane. He never fully forgave himself.
Rich The citizens aren’t the issue. They are being deprived of their basic human rights too. They are innocent in this. It’s the government who’s evil and at fault.
I don’t think it was even physical torture, his face isn’t even showing any signs of physical torture. Maybe it was brainwashing. He sure was acting like any one of those coo-coo brained north Koreans just two weeks after his arrest.

It's more like simple sleep depravation, whether intentionally done by the North Koreans or Warmbier couldn't get himself enough sleep for obvious reasons.
Nova Xo Otto wasn’t justified for what he did because he broke a law, nor is North Korea. Otto was innocent until convicted of his charge, so you’d expect for nothing bad to happen to him as apart of that. Unfortunately, he was given sleeping pills, contracted a disease called botulism, fell into a coma, possibly starved, and eventually he died from a injury possibly caused by lack of oxygen. To be a prison from another country and you’re being treated the same or worse than a terrorist is insane. He shouldn’t have been in that condition anyways because he didn’t even SERVE HIS SENTENCE, so it goes to show that the torture probably started before his trial while he was innocent.
Otto must have been SO terrified, my heart breaks for him. He didnt deserve to die. This needs to be a lesson to EVERYONE you need to take other cultures and country rules seriously.
It's astonishing how many people are blaming this kid for being brutally murdered by a corrupt dictator. His immaturity cost him his life? This story is absolutely horrifying, however it delivers a tough but important lesson to learn for people who are blessed to be born and raised in very humanistic societies: not all the world works the same as your countries. There are dangers in the world which cannot be stopped by a lawyer or money. People from the West should realize this and learn to keep safe and reasonable. Otto’s fate could happen to anyone of that tour group. There are lands which should absolutely not be treated as an exotic vacation. Obligatory personal anecdote: I worked at a hostel in Moscow for some time, guests were mostly foreigners. The amount of American college kids doing the “Vodka train” tours, for whom it was clearly their first time abroad, was seriously concerning for me. No doubt they were sold this whole thing as a “fun vacation” by the aggressive marketing in the US, while in reality the long-distance trains in Russia are often dangerous to be at (predatory drunks with knives and desperate for money are a fairly common occurence), and NO ONE speaks English on them, they’re full of undereducated village folk who still believe USSR was great and America is ruled by evil reptilians. I don’t want to imagine what could happen to a foreign 18 year old on that train, especially with alcohol involved. Money-hungry tour sellers who purposefully omit full information on risks in order to sell more tickets are an evil by themselves.
lol so you are saying USA is ''humanistic'' society with serial killers lurking everywhere and where you can't even walk a parrot at broad day light, not even mention nights?srsly... And why are long-distance trains in Russia dangerous? the most beautiful experience are those trains and friendly people you meet along the way. Shame on yourself. and YEAH - USSR WAS GREAT, and people were much safer than in such ''deRmocratic'' society packed with crimes and capitalistic manipulators. Better learn something about world for real instead of listening to USA propaganda (from where you are probably) about other parts of the world and Russia especially since amounts of lies about USSR and RUssia that USA has been producing over the years is unbelieveably horrific.

Jeff, I find your comment rather perplexing. Iran may not be a perfect country today, but it surely isn't the xenophobic mecca of intolerance your statement makes it out to be. In-fact, historically for the majority of the lands inhabited time (Iran now - previously Persia) it was home to rather impressive levels of moderation. For instance (in-case you're genuinely curious) During and on-wards of the greco-persian war, Persia, was extremely moderate in-regards to today's standards on multiculturalism. Outsider religions weren't persecuted, but in-fact welcomed (Especially in regards to trade). Something a lot of other empires at the time simply didn't do. A note-worthy example would be the Greek's by stark contrast, a very close-minded and xenophobic people. Furthermore, when Persia was finally annexed by the Islamic Conquest in the 7th century; they acknowledged the great successes of past doctrine and carried on a lot of the same ideologies. On the topic of your original comment, one very important ideology being their acknowledgement of other faiths. Even going as far as to institute law classifying them as a protected class. Allowing them to to continue living and practice their faith freely (Christians being a big one). With that said, I think it's unfair to allow less than half a century of history to warp your opinion on a country, or rather; a people as a whole.

Your comment should have ended with, "Yes, it's stupid to go to North Korea." Exactly. In life there are consequences for decisions, even for young adults. It's not an excuse. He CHOSE to go to NORTH KOREA. First off, it's immoral to give tourist dollars to King Jung Un so he can starve and torture his own people, but on top of that, he was warned at every step that the consequences were dire for any misdeeds. Whether or not he stole the poster is irrelevant. He lost his rights when he entered that country. Period. That's why there is little sympathy for him in the comments.
@Drukstylz First and for most you trying to lessen my statement by saying that I am a child does not make me sound any less confident in what i’m saying. and as a mother I would be very disappointed if my child was to steal in another country knowing that it is not legally or ethically excepted in America itself, there’s consequences that come behind the crime you commit so therefore in different countries those consequences differ specifically in countries like North Korea, that’s common fucking sense. Americans often think that their privilege of certain freedoms travels with them and this is a great example of how it does not! saying that I lack empathy for this man is quite illogical in a sense. Of course I do not believe the man should have been tortured. but due to the circumstances of the situation there was a high possibility of putting yourself in a position of endangerment and he made the choice to do so, and the united states used minimal force to get this man out of that country, he was in there for over 16 months and nk government decided to release him due to his poor health conditions and not wanting him to die on their land.

Though the length of time it takes to do an autopsy on some bodies... my friend died of a drug overdose and 8-10 months later they still don't know what killed him because they still haven't heard back from the autopsy people or the police. The police never returned all of the things they took of his either..
Man I can't say how sad this is... It's absolutely heart-rending. Poor guy. Murdered for no reason. To kill an innocent guy... or torture him into a vegetative state. How can they do something like that? Poor poor guy
And because of Hitler we should not visit Germany? Things have changed a bit lately....but NK will not be a typical tourist destination quite yet...But a NK and SKorean leader shaking hands across the border, first time EVER. A Nk leader and Us president meet and talk, first time EVER. Let's hope for a positive further development. One need to look forward.
