The Omega collab was a huge success because the brand is well known. I liked it because it meant I could get a fun fashion alternative to my expensive watch. With this is mind, I think a Seamaster collab would have been huge, and probably even bigger than Blancpain
It definitely would've been more popular. Similar to how the moon edition is the special one out of all the moonswatches, they could've had the James Bond one as the special seamaster - would've sold in droves.
I think Casio and Audemars Piquet should do an official CasiOak. That would sell like hotcakes, it's a superior sanctioned product on an existing market.
You need a better job pal. Or just do some overtime as you clearly have too much time on your hands if you have some to spare on here telling people how to spend their money that they earned 🙄
I see it like this: One chronograph, one divers watch, the next has to be from another category (pilot? field? ..etc). and when I look at it like this I get really excited because I'll definitely have one from each
Not that it’s likely to happen but I would love to see an AP x Casio collab, make the CasiOak official. I would seriously camp out to be first in line for that.
Do not steal Nico's idea!! Just give him and Pride and Pinion their credit for this suggestion for AP & casio to collaborate. He even made his own video about it! 20:44
@@WoutervanWilligen lol. Just saw the vid. Cool. We had the same idea, as I’m sure a lot of other people did. What would I gain from “stealing” “his” idea in the first place? Absolutely nothing, exactly the same as you would gain from kissing his ass this hard.
@@WoutervanWilligen I only watched the vid ‘cause you linked it. This might come as a shock to you but not everyone watches every single one of Nico’s videos as soon as they come out. LOL
i even had a discussion with my friends when this latest collab dropped and I suggested the brequet classique as the next one they would likely do. Its not hard to connect the dots on these there really isnt many options lol The watch community has a nice collection of cringe people just like the sneaker and car communities. @@adammordo
I look at smartwatches as disposable and held that as one of the main reasons I won’t ever own one. I know nuance is a thing that exists but I just can’t bring myself to get excited about these projects. I quite like the marketing exercise that they are. I’ve talked about watches with people I’ve never uttered a word to about watches previous directly because of the MoonSwatch.
Indeed! Like you say, it is a marketing exercise that works. People, other vise unable to get the expensive original, can get sort of close by owning this kind of junk but hey... How long does the happiness or possible pride of ownership last when the plastic deteriorates the second the watch is unboxed? Not to mention the whole disposable thing. It doesn´t rhyme well in these times of us supposedly being environmentally conscious. Well... It is what it is...
Blancpain, Breguet, Certina, ETA, Glashütte Original, Hamilton, Harry Winston, Longines, Mido, Omega, Rado, and Tissot are in the Swatch group, Brequet is the only one left with any iconic dial...
Converted sales of the blancpain swatch to the real fifty fathoms will be difficult. Few people can wear a 45mm watch, let alone pay 10k. If the Blancpain had changed the case dimensions of the fifty fathoms to the swatch version or smaller of 40mm-43mm and with similar styling of vintage fifty fathoms, this would have been a home run.
@@djcrazy941026 An Orient or Seiko movement will still works for 10 or 20 years, and can be replace, regulate or service. Not this plastic toy. And 400 € for this, I am curious to know the margin. You have so many good choice for this price.
For those that don't know scuba diving or the underwater world, I can understand the jest of a 'sea slug' but nudi's (as we prefer to call them) are a revered species to see and challenging to find whilst diving so for me and no doubt many scuba divers the nudibranch aspect is a fantastic addition and story for actual scuba divers! And a selling point to me! The only downside to me is the actual movement as I want to cash out for this watch but I am seriously concerned about how long this will last into the future!
Iconic chronograph racing (technically) watch in the speedmaster, iconic OG diver watch in the fifty fathoms, then to top it all off, has to be some sort of pilot. Within the Swatch group my mind jumped straight to Longines.
If they collab’d with Rolex and made a submariner…. The coverage would be front page of every news organization in the world! The demand would be unprecedented.
Next Swatch collab will be the 100 year anniversary of the 1925 Longines zulu time. They’ll have to price it so that Swatch < xLongines < xOmega < xBlancpain.
Love the sarcasm right out of the starting gates, "Oh what a time to be alive...", I love that, and now there's a whitebread fifty fathoms too, and it's not going to end anytime soon. I seriously thought once upon a time that the reverse would happen and somehow Omega would take the swatch speedmaster and create a marvelous precious metal version in the metal. Too bad, as that would have been a dimensional shift of reality and why not. If we can go from metal to bioceramic we should be able to go from bioceramic to precious metal. Love the content here and it really is amusing to see some amount of weariness to what's next from Swatch and its captive maisons...Can't wait for the new Bioceramic Breuget Type XX, Oh the humanity. And you rock Monsieur A. Morgan.
I was at the Brussels Grand Place on the release of the Moonswatch, and the line was across the entire square and down the street. Though I believe they only released approx. 500 on the first day. My heart was a bit broken, but I'm kind of glad it was (in hindsight). Yesterday we went into Brussels for some shopping food and drink and saw the new Blancpains on display at Swatch. Went in, and the gentleman showed me the collection along with the black "Ocean of Storms"...maybe the boring replica but the one that had my eye from the start. We went and had a beer at a little hidden place we routinely visit, and my wife said I should buy it. So we went back and I did. They only had 50 pieces originally and only 14 left, but surprisingly no line, but it was the watches everyone was looking at. The couple bits of info I think that are left out is that the lum is "Grade A Super-LumiNova" and it has a sapphire glass on the rear. I gave it a good light shot around 11pm and at 6am this a.m. it was still faintly glowing, but enough so to make it legible. I am not a fan of quartz watches unless they're solar mostly because I don't like to change the batteries, and the 90hr power reserve is the longest yet. Not on par with the real FF's 120hr (I believe its that much), but I'll take it! My personal feelings about the one I bought is that I believe it's fantastic, but I'm going to be bias as why otherwise would I have spent €400 on it.
I heard rumors from my AD about 3-4 months ago about a new 40-42mm 50 fathoms (non bathyscaphe). If that’s true and they release it soon I can see it doing better in the wake of the swatch release. They better get on with it soon though if they want to cash in.
The concept is fine by me but this one is just too expensive as a functional souvenir of the real thing. You can find a pretty good watch, such as the Hamilton Khaki field watch, which you mentioned, for similar money.
This is the best watch chanel! Love you guys. I could not agree more. Purely by chance i was in Venice (IT) this week and there was a que outside swatch store, however when i returned only 2-3 people. Seeing the watch in person i wasn't much impressed.
I actually love these watches, if they were $100 cheaper they would be a great deal. I have a 10 year old system 51 that is still going strong! Can it be service no. But I can take the 500-1000 it would cost to service another automatic and buy a couple of these collabs.
I could see them doing a Swatch X Breguet Type XX model in the future, but I can't see them doing much with the likes of Longines, Rado or Hamilton since they're already "budget" watches (or at least, the retail prices aren't multiple times the Swatch price). Could see a Glashutte Senator Sixties/Seventies model perhaps, but my guess is the Collab needs to be with iconic watches, so maybe they'd go back to Omega and do a Seamaster 300 or ProPlof model.
Yes it has to be an iconic watch that is also expensive. That leaves Seamaster and Breguet. Glashutte could do with promotion but it simply isn't well known enough. To get full value from this collaboration they need to introduce a smaller fifty fathoms because 45mm is simply too big for most people. I would choose 40mm over 42mm because 40mm could be unisex whereas 42mm is pretty much men's only.
A Swatch x Casio F-91W would be an internet breaker as it would be more expensive than the F-91W and sales for the original would go through the roof as could availability and price even more than they already do. The Swatch version would sell out of course but they would have to choose a different colour to those already in the vast F-91W palette of which there are many. Another would be a G-Shock square. I love them. My beloved old friend 5610 nestles comfortably on my wrist as usual following medical stuff as I type. My F-91W is sleeping but will be back on the wrist in a couple of days. Don't you just love watches? My mechanical watches will still get there turn in a day or so.
What would be nice to see next after this marketing ploy: a 42mm Fifty Fathoms in this style (not the bathyscaphe) that would now be wearable, recognisable, available, and therefore potentially compete with the Submariner.
@@-Jason-LI'm pretty sure they mean a normal steel FF made by BP, but with these dimensions/design. I don't know that it would really compete with the sub given the FF is significantly more expensive and less known, but I believe that is the idea they are thinking of.
@enigmaticecstasy many pre-owned subs also went in that direction in terms of price in recent years. With this stunt, I think the Fifty Fathoms will gain a lot more recognition.
I would like to see the Hamilton x Swatch, but with the Ventura instead of the Khaki. Also, if you can get the family on board (which may be the biggest issue), you would promote the differing designs as tributes to Elvis Presley, the Ventura's most famous owner.
Making the strap from netting and the watch from plastic. Is like going to McDonald's and ordering an orange juice with your big mac meal and thinking your meal is healthy! Lol
@@julienfroidevaux1143sometimes robots have a good day because I have heard of multiple accounts of people with 10 year old watches that are still working fine.
Thanks for the info on the movement. Hopefully you get many more years out of it. Would be interested in hear more about the longevity of the system 51 from other swatch owners.
@@steveeschweiler8603 It's a mechanical movement. There is nothing special about it. So you can assume that it will be good for around 5 years. The around translates in to something between 0 and 10. How long it will last depends too on how you use it. I'm for one riding 15k kilo meters on a bike. That is of course shortening the live span of watches I wear significantly.
To close the marketing loop, what they should’ve done is offered a discount equivalent to the price of the plastic version (either Speedmaster or Fifty Fathoms) toward the original in the metal. This would incentivize buyers of the X Swatch versions to get into the more expensive models. Additionally, and perhaps more for those who were already contemplating the steel versions, they could offer the plastic version as a gift with purchase. Awareness campaigns are far better when they they sew the seeds of brand loyalty.
I personally like the Blue one a lot. That said I'd rather Blancpain put in the time and money into making a modern iteration of their classic Fifty Fathoms- thinner movement, small case dimesnsions, better finishing and a better claps/depolyant.
@@LT-rb2pk5K would be more like it. Tudor & Longines make great pieces at that price point. Truth is, only the extreme BB enthusiast would pick at FF over a BB or Sub. BP got left behind years ago. And I doubt this naff collab with swatch will help matters…
@@LT-rb2pk so you’ve gone from 35K to 20K. The point is you’d have to be mad to spend 20K or 35K on a BP FF diver when you can get a Tudor BB for less than 5K or a Sub for less than 10K.
@@KeepingWatchUK are you trying not to understand haha? The current one is alr 20k. If you want them to sell you a better version, expext 35k lol. Not sure what you are trying to say at this point but yes people are paying 20k to buy the current 50 fathom
Really? Hordes of people were coming into an Omega shop looking for a £260 plastic Moonswatch and buying a £6,500 Moonwatch instead, were they??? Happens to me all the time; I go to Argos to by a £5 Sony Playstation pencil case but it was out of stock, so left with a £3,000 77-inch OLED Sony TV instead. And now we find out Swatch Group brands were “vying” to be the next “collaboration” with the market-leading disposable plastic product maker Swatch! Vying, no less!!! Flik Flak must have been devastated it didn’t win the race 😭 That’s apocryphal comedy gold 😆😂🤣
I think that this may also not be a wholly successful story for Blancpain. Fifty Fathoms, is something that many will imagine (because they’ll not have even googled it) is very deep, adding to the mystery of a dive watch. Now, we all know it’s only 91 metres, so nothing particularly special for a dive watch. As for the availability of these collaborations, I feel that this is deliberate as a means to prolong the hype for very little cost to Swatch.
Looks cool, but when you think of the watches you can get for the same money (seiko king turtle, hamilon khaki field, etc.) which will last you a lifetime.... it just doesnt make sense
Great chat Guys. Thanks! Two problems: it's made of plastic and didn't we have a world plastic problem last week? AND my God! The colours. Don't they have any designers?
Tom, you mentioned a souvenir watch, but the thought that came to my mind was, a souvenir of what? A souvenir or the last time I bought a cynical, and disposable, marketing (collect 'em all whilst you can) toy from Swatch group?
Apparently before the launch of the MoonSwatch, Swatch made 3 prototypes, the BP FF, Omega Speedmaster & Seamaster. So I forecast the Seamaster is next. Blancpain is not a huge industrial concern like Omega and I understand only produces circa 7-10k watches annually. If there is a big increase in sales orders on the actual Fifty Fathoms (40% uptick in sales as has been suggested for the real Omega Moonwatch in the year following the launch of the MoonSwatch), I don’t think BP would be able or want to meet that demand, they aren’t meant to be mass market “me too” watches. So hello waiting lists.
i reckon the next collab (if ever) would be the Breguet Type XX, i mean it iconic, underrated, historic and it represents the sky, i mean we alr have space, the seas/oceans and now the sky (makes sense ? idk hahahaha)
I don't hate the BlancpainSwatch. But what's the point of getting a famous dive watch that aren't even swimmable. Also, even expensive watches like the new Panarai or Baum&Mercier dive watches have decreased their dive ratings. Creating a 'dive style' watch trend, which is pointless. In the long run, this will hurt the machanical watch market. Because what pleased enthusiasts was the 'quality' of watches. Not some hype.
I have some nice mechanical watches and also have a Moonswatch. Personally, I find the anger here to be quite funny. I think it’s vain to spend thousands on a mechanical watch that is really little more than jewelry in a day when we all have phones that are far more accurate. If someone wants to pay $400 for a plastic watch they brings them joy, so be it. I get great satisfaction from the quality of my daily Seiko automatic for which I paid less than the cost of my swatch, but have never once had anyone comment on my Seiko but get regular questions about the Swatch.
I love Tom:) he memes the cheap guy not knowing much about watches, but behind the fassade, whenever he makes a serious statement it's usually smart and very well articulated:)
Same. The only (huge) mistake IMHO is the welded-in movement and crystal, making the watch a single-use throwaway piece of unsustainable junk. (I have not yet been given 100% confirmation from a source I can trust completely, but apparently the movement and crystal are indeed welded in and not replaceable.) Otherwise I like the idea and designs...well I'm only a fan of few of the colours but I'd say that's good enough.
@@veganbutcherhackepeter It's a Swatch, they are cheap and disposable. That's the whole point. I'd rather break a disposable watch that looks like a 50 fathoms than break my proper one.
@@Rob_1689 A 390 € disposable watch? Really? And the point is that Blancpain x Swatch has a less strong crystal and a movement which WILL stop working very soon and is overall far less reliable and fragile. Compare it to loads of other watches in the 50-500€ price range: so many other watches have stronger replaceable movements, far better quality crystals (even sapphire) which are also replaceable. Other far cheaper watches can be kept running for decades and decades. This Swatch WILL stop running, I'm told in approx. max 10 years, and many have had their Sistem51s stop running in a few years.
This is brilliant. I’d love H. Moser to take the piss and call out what I’d consider an extremely cynical and pathetically hypocritical marketing exercise. I sound really sour about it, just an grump this evening I guess haha.
When i first started collecting I was in love with the Fifty Fathoms. Time has passed, I have purchased other watches and over the years other watches have moved up my “one day” list. For me, this will give me a likely very unsatisfying scratch to the old FF itch. As unsatisfying as it might be, I still appreciate that I have a $400 option to enjoy. For all the haters, no one is making you buy it so don’t take it so seriously.
Breguet would be the next possible direction, however it would depend on the success of the Blancpain campaign. Hopefully this marketing trend won’t continue
