I was implanted LHS Nov 2022. It's only a matter of time until my RHS needs implanting also. I just wanted to say thank you for your videos - they helped a lot as I prepared mentally for the process, which can feel daunting. Trying to find sources of information that are both detailed and realistic is hard and, in my opinion, you strike just the right balance. Having a CI has been life changing for me (in a good way). For anyone wondering what they sound like, the simulation video Nelle made is accurate in my view (as time goes my brain is "forgetting" its a robotic sound and it is becoming "normal"). Thanks again,

Your videos are wonderful and make me feel more comfortable with the idea of having an implant. It is like you are there and providing me with the support I don't have as my family are a 9 hour drive (each way) from me. I am just waiting for a surgery date for an implant - I suddenly lost my hearing in my left ear 6 months ago. Thank you for the insight into the whole process.

Enjoy learning about your hearing experiences. I was implanted in 2013, and like you, I use a Nucleus 7 and I have a compatible Resound Enzo hearing aid. My hearing aid audiologist has set up the program on my hearing aid to complement the implant. Specifically, it is set up to provide bass frequency information. It "fills in" the sound in such a way that I enjoy music. At the same time, the feedback whistling is eliminated. This may be an option for you. I've just been informed that I'm now going to be receiving the Nucleus 8! I'm extremely pleased with my implant experience, and judging by your videos, which I enjoy immensely, I suspect you are very satisfied as well.

It wasn’t boring at all. It was nice to see your mum and to hear that she thinks you’re much more comfortable in social situations. That’s where I’d like to get to in my journey: You’re very down to earth and will make a great mentor to a new user.

This was very helpful to see how different counties and services do the cochlear implant appointments. I have got an upgrade appointment soon to the N8 so if people are interested, I can tell you how the N8 is different to the N6.

The N8’s is so much better. I am in love with the forward focus setting which means for the first time I can actually have a conversation with other people in a noisy environment easily. I am also loving that I don’t have to carry a remote around with me to adjust settings. I just use my phone now. Another feature is the direct streaming which means that I can just press play on a video and it plays. In the past I have had to make sure my phone clip is charged.

Thanks Nelle and all the other people who comment. I have been wearing hearing aids since 1979 ! analogue ( which were terrible) through to the latest digital which are excellent. I have severe loss in left ear so aid still helps - right ear is profoundly deaf, so aid scan do no more for it - so that's why I am getting - soon I hope - CI for right ear and will still use aid in left ear. Input from real user like you Nelle are so much better than stuff put out by manufacturers. By the way Nelle you are a fantastic communicator and a natural documentary presenter. Keep it up and BBC or someone will sign you up!

Thank you! I'm glad you find my videos useful. Good luck getting your cochlear implant. As you can tell from the results in the video, getting a cochlear implant has made such a difference to my speech understanding compared to hearing aids. It's a bit difficult to find content online about cochlear implants which isn't either marketing material, random news clips saying they're a miracle, or people acting like they are an evil conspiracy to destroy deaf people. My experience isn't really any of those so I thought sharing my experience could be really valuable. :)

@@nellefindlay Hi Nelle, thanks for your videos. I am looking at getting CI for my right side in the very near future. I have been diagnosed with Meniere's as well, and my speech recognition has diminished significantly - to the point of fear of loosing my job. I think it's moderately sever, but there is distortion, which makes anything other than a pure tone useless to understand. Will a CI make a big difference with that?
@nellefindlay
@nellefindlay Год назад
@@spacecaptainscott Hi, I don't know how a CI will work specifically for you because your situation seems different from mine. I have profound hearing loss in both ears, meaning that I couldn't really hear anything before my implant, so I don't know how well it would help with distortion. In theory, I imagine it would bypass everything until the auditory nerve, so as long as the nerve is functioning, you should get normal results with an implant, but that's definitely something to discuss with your audiologist. Nelle :)

Happy new year Nelle💖that was the best video to date,your mum was amazing,excellent filming & singing your praises at the end! It was not a long boring video! It's good the implant centre was still uping the volume etc on your CI,and your word score etc was amazing,I think more people of your age after watching your video will get a CI,but with a new processer out soon this is where we need to raise that money through go fund me to get your other ear implanted,look how well your doing with one & as your consultant said your hearing aid not doing much good! But you have worn one for nearly two years & it must help a tiny bit or the audiologist would not have given you one! Plus hopefully it will help your brain for when you get your implant! I am truly thankful for the way you do the captions now,I can barely hear a word with hearing aids now! When talking with the audiologist you were leaning forward to try & hear,when your deaf it's the natural thing to do so you hear more! Your mum has noticed the change in you mainly since uni! Much more confident! And the hardest part for me was admitting I was deaf & needed more technology! Just because we wear hearing devices it does not make us hearing,we are still deaf! So all the while your trying to raise money for the other ear to be implanted I will donate when I can as you deserve to hear better your a nice lady💗💗

Thanks you for your comment. I guess I don't really see the improvements because It's every day, but because my mum hasn't seen me as much she can see the improvements more. I'm very grateful to the whole team at the auditory implant service for the opportunity to have a cochlear implant.

Nelle, has there been a change to your an ability to hear/enjoy music?
@nellefindlay
@nellefindlay Год назад
I'm still adapting to my new program since they made some adjustments at this appointment, but hopefully that will improve how well I can hear music because the sound should be more balanced between the low and high frequencies, but I think I will be making a video soon about my experiences listening to music with my cochlear implant. :)

@@nellefindlay, you are so thoughtful for answering all the questions I pose. Thank you! As a hearing/seeing person, deafness and blindness have always intrigued me. When I was a young girl in elementary school, I was so impressed with Helen Keller, I learned finger signing. I'm 66 and still use it. Because of RU-vid and vloggers as open as yourself, you've helped me to understand the nuances of these conditions and concepts that were always a bit nebulous to grasp. Well done, Nelle!

@kittywampus
@kittywampus Год назад
@@katyagardiner4003 I thought I'd follow up at 2 weeks with the processor. Wow! Voices are not normal, but I'm amazed with what I'm able to hear. I'm hearing things that I wasn't hearing with my bone anchor hearing aid and I had thought that that was doing really well. I can hear my cats, the coffee maker, birds, the toilet refilling and so many other things. I am having trouble with pitch though. Music is really tough but I'm better able to understand lyrics. Occasionally I can get the pitch correct but it seems I need more practice on this. Practice is the key from what I can tell and I've been working hard at it. My audiologist is very happy with my progress and so am I. I think going through the initial shock of hearing with my bone anchor hearing aid has made the cochlear a bit easier. Listening fatigue is a thing and if I hadn't gone through this before, I don't think I'd have progressed as quickly as I have so far. I guess that is it for now. It's not natural hearing, but it is amazing.

Watching your response to testing, we’re you actually hearing the tones or feeling the vibrations?

Hi Nelle, Thank you very much for your videos it’s quite interesting and informative. I just wanted to ask you if you knew any ideas about which is better The Kanso 2 or Nucleus 8? Many thanks again
@nellefindlay
@nellefindlay Год назад
Hi, I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. I haven't used either of these processors so I don't really know. I use the nucleus 7 and I really like it so I guess the nucleus 8 would probably be very similar, but I don't actually know. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the kanso 2 if you would prefer an off the ear processor. I think it just depends on your personal preference. :)

I'm a 34 years old man from Italy new to the channel as unfortunately I just suffered sudden hear loss on my left ear and find your story inspiring for me. The greatest problem is the loss of balance and the constant "being drunk" feeling which unfortunately is destroying the quality of my life. Any tips on that? How long did it take for you to reach a better balance and feel "less drunk"? Any particular treatment you would advise? Hope the best for you.
@nellefindlay
@nellefindlay Год назад
Hi, that sounds really difficult. When I first lost my hearing I would get motion sick from everything that involved moving my head too much, I also had really poor balance. I can't provide any specific recommendations because I am not your medical professional, but what I was recommended to do was vestibular rehabilitation exercises. You can find instructions online, they might be worth a try and they're pretty risk free. My balance is still slowly getting better, but it probably won't ever be normal. I don't get as severe motion sickness any more, but I still have pretty noticeable oscillopsia which I don't think will ever fully resolve. I hope this answers your question. Nelle :)

Usually all the testing you went thru in completed in a sound proof booth when I go.
@nellefindlay
@nellefindlay Год назад
Hi, I think it depends on the implant centre. Southampton has a whole soundproof room (which is where I was). There is a big one-way window into another room where the audiologist goes to do the testing so you can't see when they press the button and cheat. I have also had the hearing tests where they put you in a little booth thing, so I think it just depends on the place. Nelle :)
