I recently found out my wild world game looks so much worse on my 2ds xl screen than it does on my dsi. That may be what you remember, but this seems to have been filmed on a 3ds so the quality is much worse :)

Just so you know, the game was actually being made a few years prior to even 2000... so technically the game is right on point. Dont forget, the creators of games such as this one always put some sort of date or even a mysterious items in the game to signify the dates they started or to symbolize important aspects of the game that no one notices. Just because it was out in 2005, doesnt mean it was made EXACTLY at that time, it was being developed 7 years prior.. that's even longer then going back to 2000 from 2005 so... idk what the problem is here or why everyone is excited/shocked... this happens in games and movies all the time.

Not that weird if you consider the format that the time is being stored on the ds. The year is most likely stored as a double digit (00-99) with a flat "20" at the front so when it swaps over it just goes back to 2000. The same issue happened with the Y2K problem going from 1990's to 2000s.

This is my prediction knowing some of the logic of how games are usually programmed: 1: The year will go to 2100. (Most likely) The 2099 limit seems really low and hard coded to stop people going insane meaning the system will be perfectly capable of going over 2099. 2: The game crashes instantly. Maybe the game only accepts years between 2005 (assumed lower bound) and 2099, in which the game will detect something has gone horribly wrong and crashes. 3: The game crashes after a couple seconds/minutes. As time is just a number counting up, the game might not crash instantly, but will continue into 2100 for a bit before something tries to access the time for something like the music changing every hour or checking if a shop should be closed or open before entering. 4: Something intended happens. (Least likely) The developers could have known people would do this, so made a surprise for anyone who finds it. Note all of this is just my opinion and your thoughts my differ, I paused the video before the clock ticked over to comment this.

Just watched the rest of the video! What happened is very similar to integer overflow, although I didn't include it in the list as the year has to be in the billions. This is probably what the developers intended to happen when the date ticked over, just resetting the date back to the start. Here is an experiment that will be much harder (maybe impossible) to pull off that has a small chance of actually crashing the system: Step 1: play the game for about a week, making sure to socialise with the villagers and take part in any events that might happen, Step 2: set the date to the first of January 2000. Step 3: If one of the villagers tries to reminisce about something that happened while doing step 1, they could mention the date the event happened on, as this will be in 1999, this could be an oversight in the game and crash the system. The only 2 flaws with this is that usually the villagers never mention the date just how long ago it happened, and that doing this won't even crash the system, just displaying 1999 as expected. Anyway thanks for reading! I love topics like integer overflow and animal crossing! It's currently 2am so if my grammar is off that's probably why. Thanks for reading my thoughts 🤓

Ahahahah my theory is that this happened for the same reason everyone panicked about Y2K. Like, the two-digit code probably clicked over from 99 to 00 like an odometer. The '20' probably wasn't even considered an actual part of the number, just a stand-in symbol. An interesting choice on the part of the developers aha

That actually happened in 1999 because in order so save bits in the programs they wrote the year as -99 so it went back in 1900. It was a big problem that affected the economy a little bit but I don’t remember all the details

As a developer, yes I predicted the year would just roll over. If you check what the earliest time you can set it at, it’s probably 2000. They could have added an Easter egg just to make it fun, but that would have been the most I would expect.

I know that I’m not the only one who got Y2K vibes here, despite the fact that I was born the following year in 2001, the same year the original Animal Crossing came out. I’ve also noticed something interesting. If you look at the day of the week when the time reaches midnight, you will see it goes from Thursday STRAIGHT to Saturday. No Friday in between! I first though the game had looped back to 2005, but I was wrong. I did NOT expect the game to loop to 2000, as that date doesn’t even exist at ALL on the GameCube. I looked at the calendar app on my iPad and found that 2000 AND 2005 BOTH started on a Saturday. The only difference is that 2000 was naturally a leap year, so it had a February 29th, while 2005 did not. Speaking of which, the leap year 2004 started on a Thursday, and Friday was the day that was skipped over for New Year’s Day between 2004 and 2005.

Assuming someone started playing the game on release and started their town on the date January 1, 2005, and they played a week a day in-game via time-traveling, they could have feasibly gotten to December 31, 2099 at least by 2019-2020.
