A lot of comments are saying flights in the EU are still asking passengers to put their cell phones in airplane mode. That may be true but as of over a year ago the airlines are no longer required to say that. In 2022 they ruled that all member nations must make 5G available to airplanes by June 30, 2023. More and more flights in the EU are now allowing 5G cell phones to be used during flights meaning they’re not in airplane mode. Mark, as an airline pilot, if I thought for a moment that the safety of the flight depends on trusting that every one of the multitude of passengers in the back actually complied and had their phone in airplane mode, I’d do something else for a living.
Airline pilot here, the amount of times I've seen a message mid flight saying "welcome to X country" as you get random signal when you've forgotten to use flight mode. I'm still alive so far. The frequency thing is real though, Boeing had a notice out for a long time about 5G and rad alt interference, but it's now fixed.
As a German, yes they do say on every flight to put all devices in airplane mode but I always wondered why exactly that was a rule so thanks for explaining ❤
I heard an interview with a senior authority in a europian airline. They still want your devices in flight safe mode because they dont want people yapping away on their phones during take off and landing
Another reason is that your phone can connect to multiple cell towers draining its battery faster if it’s not on airplane mode, which would not be ideal in an emergency
I guess they want airplane mode on only for the beginning and end of the flight, because for the rest of the time, you are completely out of range of any cell towers.
What I want to know is why WiFi calling is forbidden on planes. Like, didn't first-class used to have handset style phones in the seat? Why is WiFi calling worse than that?
I’m from Europe. I have never been in a flight that they didn’t mention to set devices on airplane mode. I fly at least 6 times a year, but usually it’s around 10 times a year.
Yeah, I think we're also asked to use air plane mode here in Europe (last time I flew was 1 year ago). I believe EU is preparing/making changes towards removing said limitation. I had the idea comms between airplane/pilots and control towers, namely in important moments like tske off snd landing, could also be slightly affected by cellphones. Personally I don't mind having no communications for a couple of hours. I'd rather there were no interferences at all with a system (airplane) whose malfunction can have such severe consequences.😅
Well… that’s not the full picture. Airplane mode isn’t needed, it’s just for saving batteries. In small aircraft (like the 172 I fly) we leave our phones on, and actually use them as additional flight instruments/backups
I don’t think this is true at all. I think the reason is that cellphone signals that high in the sky can interfere with a lot of things on the ground and between ground and satellite. Because of the way the signal spreads out. Leaving the safety of the plane up to passenger responsibility would be insane
The safety of a flight is not dependent on a voluntary action by passengers. This is primarily to keep people focussed and ready to evacuate during critical phases of a flight. Similar to how all window shades used to have to be opened prior to takeoff or landing, or why headphones needed to be removed. Mark, disappointed in your lack of understanding on this subject. Stick to glitter bombs lol.
Every flight ive been on asks to put the phone in flight mode (all of them in europe), but id say that the interference is minimal, Id believe there are other benefits such as people put away their phone meanwhile on the plane, which means less dizzines caused by looking at your phone, aswell as you get the full planes attention
Bah moi je suis allé au Maroc en avion et ils ne nous ont rien dis. Pourtant, toute les personnes à cotés de moi mettaient le mode avion. Moi aussi, par réflexe...
Aren’t devices like phones supposed to broadcast and receive mostly low power below the noise floor? I have a hard time believing that phone transmitters could interfere with high power aircraft equipment
Dont know wich european flight u took but on mine to germany or spain from Switzerland we were always asked to put in airplane mode during takeoff and landing.
