Thanks for all the great videos! you do an amazing job and I can tell you do it with passion. I just bought a Ford Explorer 2017 Platinum thanks to your reviews from your videos. it really helped me decide. I'm 2 days from picking it up and it is my first brand new car. Having only some experience buying used cars, buying a new car is a complete new experience for me and don't know what to expect. I've been searching PDI inspections and checklist before the sale but can't find something helpful. I wanted to suggest to you making such video since you have access to brand new cars and have the experience. it might be too late for me but I'm sure some one will be in my shoes at some point. Cheers and keep up the great work.

Be aware that the power assist on the brakes will be operating on reserve vacuum as soon as you stop the engine, and will give you at least one normal stop. If you pump the pedal that reserve vacuum will quickly be depleted and stoping distance will be way longer.

@robertsteich7362

Are you sure you still have power steering? At those speeds you tested at, it's very easy to not feel the difference between having power steering or non-power steering. I say run the same test, but try to steer as your traveling at 5mph or less. Of course stop the engine and just wait until you slowed to 5mph.
@chrwl007
@chrwl007 7 лет назад
That's what I was thinking as well. Probably don't have power assistance available, but the speed makes it feel like it. Or the car has hydraulic power assistance and the engine was still being turned by the wheels (transmission was in Drive when he steered).
@robertsteich7362
@robertsteich7362 7 лет назад
chrwl007 good thinking, but unfortunately as soon as the engine is turned off. The automatic transmission is disengaged from the engine. So the drive wheels will not be able to turn the engine. In a manual, however, the transmission is still engaged to the engine. But will most definitely yield a different result. Note how he was able to "coast" his speed down. With a manual, it would slow the car down a lot faster. So much so it could be as if he applied the brakes pretty hard. After a quick search. It looks like the Ford Fusion has electronic power steering. Thus no traditional fluid pump needed. However, when the ignition is turned off, the electronic power steering motor loses power too. So we're back to my original thought... perhaps an other test at the 50mph without touching anything until 5mph then try to turn the wheel.
@traviswiebe3711
@traviswiebe3711 7 лет назад
Robert Steich it can still have power steering because it's electric power steering not hydraulic, hydraulic would slowly loose pressure and eventually go away, electric power steering is ether on or off.
@robertsteich7362
@robertsteich7362 7 лет назад
Travis Wiebe I understand that it's electronic power steering. However the ignition is turned off. So technically so should the electronic power steering. Think about it, if it was parked and the ignition turned off. Why in the world would you want to have power steering available? Even if the motor in the power steering it self isn't receiving power, surely the sensors and brains are when the ignition is on. Thus it's a drain on the battery if that was the case.
@traviswiebe3711
@traviswiebe3711 7 лет назад
Robert Steich I have nothing to back this up, but I'd bet money on the fact that there is a sensor for ether the transmission being in gear our the car being stopped (my guess is transmission) before it turns off the power steering, for safety reasons. They already included the ability to shut the engine off while you're driving in case of "unintended acceleration".

Once my car (2001 SAAB) shut down on the highway. I was about 40mph. Then thing is: power steering and power breaking worked for about 5 seconds, then the steering became very stiff and the breaks couldn't stop the car. I had to carefully use the handbreak to stop it. In your video you didn't wait enough to see if the steering or breaking would really be still working.
@rayfoster7989
@rayfoster7989 7 лет назад
You will still have power steering as long as it is the newer electric type, however on an older car with hydraulic power steering (most cars still on the road) it will have no power assist the moment the engine stops. It will steer, but will take high effort since you have no power assist and you also are forcing hydraulic fluid through valves as you turn the steering wheel.

All cars keep power steering and brake pressure enabled while on the move since these systems were electrically powered, no matter if they are hydroelectric, electric or by wire. My '07 lancia phedra/ Peugeot 8008/ Citroën C8 already implemented this feature. It won't even turn off auto lights until you come to a complete stop.

Hey Mike, this is an irrelevant question to the video, but I have a 2015 Ford Explorer limited, and I've had it for less than 2 years. However, the steering wheel coating has started to peel off, did you have customers complained about it before? Has Ford fixed this problem? (I've had the same issue with my 2010 Ford Mustang)
@francescocosoleto

In my car manual there is a warning about don't start the engine while the car is moving (something like not pushing the car or using a downhill to start the engine) as you can severely damage the catalytic converter, due to a inflow of fuel. This can't apply in that case, as well? Also, I have the same doubt of Robert Steich about the power steering. But what it is really worrying me is that people may mistakenly think they have full brake power while the engine is turned off. Because if you got no brake assist or reduced vacuum servo (brake booster) and you think you do, that can be a dangerous situation.

Your power steering still works because youre not in neutral. The transmission is turning the motor making the serpentine system turn which as a result, is spinning your power steering pump
@lsswappedcessna
@lsswappedcessna 7 лет назад
idk about new keyed cars, but on old automatic trans cars (not pushbutton.), the neutral safety switch prevents the car from starting on any gear except park.
@JoeJ-8282
@JoeJ-8282 7 лет назад
Do you also have power brakes and ABS when the engine is off in that situation, (in order to come to a complete and safe stop if your throttle/gas pedal sticks or whatever), or does it get really "heavy" to push the brakes? And if they DO stay power assisted when the ignition/engine is off, I wonder how that happens? (I suppose by using electric pumps in modern cars, rather than (engine) vacuum, as in older vehicles.)

Late model cars have electric power steering. If you have the older style hydraulic power steering and you shut your engine off you will lose power steering. On both cars you will lose power brakes, whether they are hydraulic or vacuum boosted. You must put the trans mission in neutral to restart it.

That's right folks, our friend here is doing the testing so that WE don't have to. Useful but even with an isolated road I wouldn't feel comfortable. Also, what happens if you keep the gear in D and attempt to restart? This one I've tested in a manual with traditional key and worked perfect. No problems.

Awesome great videos like always. Can you do some like. "What happens when you jump out of your car going 70+mph?" "What happens when you drive a car with no oil in it?" maybe.. "What happens if you put diesel in your gas car?" My wives BMW has a thing that stops the car if the door opens while driving down the road..do one of those would be cool to know too. I'll think of some other ones later.. oh and might want to do the first one I mentioned last.. guess it could make it hard to do the other ones if you did it in the wrong order. :P

Mentioned this video to my wife as she has a 2013 Ford Escape and she said she'd been trying to remember to tell me something. Yesterday she was driving through a parking lot at about 10 mph and when she reached for the wiper controls she accidentally hit the start button. The dash went dark, the engine died but realizing what she just did, she pressed the start button again (in gear, rolling), the engine restarted and she went on her merry way.

I haven't read all the comments, so this may have been asked. When restarting most cars with keyless start you need to put your foot on the brake while you press the start button. I presume that the software is aware of the rolling engine stop and that that a press to restart on the fly overrides the need to press the brake as required when parked/stopped.

A question that's crossed my mind is, if someone steals your car with you in it, but you manage to throw the key fob out of the car and also get it turned off, would they still be able to get it started again while it's moving? I'm sure after stopping it wouldn't start again without the fob.

Hard to tell if you lost your power steering at 60 mph. At speed you don't really need much assist in power steering, it's at lower speed, parking lot and turning a corner speed, where power steering really comes into play. As far as the operation of the start button, I believe this is a NTSB standard (I know right? Standards for motor vehicles? Also, it's all in the operations manual.) Back when push button start came out there was a famous case of 4 people dying when they're cars accelerator stuck and they ran off the end of an under construction highway. One of them was a state trooper. They didn't know to hold the button in. They tapped on it. They were on a phone to 911 when it happened and worse yet, they didn't just put the car in neutral to save their lives. That was quite a few years ago and the reporting was for those uninformed to hold in on the stop button and the engine would die or at least put it in neutral.

Correction please. I think your power steering is completely off because you turned off the ignition. The power steering will work once you start again the ignition. You are running above 40 miles per hour that's why you can easily move it while running. But unfortunately the power steering is completely not working. (Based on my Car experience Manual & Automatic transmission). Have a good day

@zosxavius
@zosxavius 7 лет назад
You don't have power steering. At speed the steering gets lighter. As you slow down the wheel should get harder to turn. You also only have whatever brake pressure is left in the system. That will slowly bleed off and then you won't have any boost to assist with braking.
